Slavic motives and their function in the works of K.J. Erben and B. Němcová (cultural studies)
Šťástka, Tomáš ; Soukup, Martin (referee) ; Janeček, Petr (referee)
There are numerous characters in the world of Czech fairytales: apart from the common ones, there is also a multitude of supernatural entities. Inspiration for some of them came from different sources, other characters are indigenous and refer to Slavonic ancient mythology. It is exactly the role of these daemons, ghosts and other beings, that depicts the way a mediaeval person was able to adapt to an unknown environment and deal with its threats. The aim of the thesis is to find Slavonic roots of these supernatural beings. First part of the thesis presents an analysis of the most important works of Karel Jaromír Erben and Božena Němcová. Regarding the contemporary understanding of their work, this part questiones the significance of writers' own preconceptions on one side, and the importance of the persisting remains of pagan tradition on the other, and discusses the resulting image and our contemporary understanding of the work. The beings inspired by ancient Slavonic daemonology will be further analysed according to the systematics of V. J. Propp and their role will be explained in the specific fairytales. Following chapters summarize our current knowledge of Slavonic paganism and describe its particular figures and deities. Due to the consequences of christianization, as well as its historical...

Klimšová, Jana ; Letavajová, Silvia (advisor) ; Podoláková, Katarína (referee) ; Janeček, Petr (referee)
Skinhead subculture exists for already fifty years. Its history relates closely to United Kingdom, where it has been founded and has divided into numerous fractions, which on the first glimpse might appear confusing. I have undertaken my research in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, strictly speaking in capitals and their outskirts of both countries. I have focused on history of this subculture and its nowadays forms in my diploma. I have concentrated to visual and musical expressions of skinhead subculture, its symbolism, value system and world-view; as well as major population view on the subculture. Information used was gathered from available literature, by work with respondents both members of the subculture and major population.
Invention of traditions by folk ensembles
Mušinková, Michaela ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Štěpánová, Irena (referee)
This study is concerned with constructing the folk traditions by means of the activities of the folk groups whilst paying attention to continuous, interrupted and invented traditions. It is dealing with terms folk, folklorism and interaction between them while focusing on the activity of a folk group (= folklorism), which repertoire is based on folk origins, and its influence on preservation and development of folk. The starting point of the study is a hypothesis, which tells us that a folk group helps to revitalize traditions. From methodological point of view, the study is based on field research. The research was conducted in two Ruthenian villages in the northeast Slovakia; in one of them operates a folk group. The main goal of the work is confirmation or disproval of the hypothesis using an example of a tradition - wedding ceremony. By detailed analysis, I am looking for analogical and differential elements between the individual weddings in one locality while paying attention to the change of wedding in time (comparison of current weddings from the recordings with traditional Ruthenian wedding described in literature by folklorists) and comparing this ceremony in both localities. The study is also trying to determine to what extent is a group/absence of a group affecting the individual...
Taking the veil and the temporary vows as a rite of passage observed in the Catholic religious orders of Discalced Carmelites and Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo
Moravcová, Anežka ; Janeček, Petr (advisor) ; Jakoubková Budilová, Lenka (referee)
The rite of taking the veil and of the temporary vows in female religious congregations present breaking points in the lives of the future nuns. I would argue that these rituals, which sometimes fuse into one ceremony, show clear marks of the so called "rite-of-passage". Nuns put on the veil for the first time, and become full-fledged members of the closed community. The ritual has preserved its main form, even though it has been subjected to some modernisation within many congregations. We can observe its importance hasn't been much diminished since late. This study attempts to demonstrate the importance of these ceremonies in contemporary communities and to show that they can truly be categorised as examples of rite-of-passage ("rite-de-passage") such as has been coined and described by Arnold van Gennep. Studying the importance of the ritual means exploring also its role in the individual life stories recalled by the selected respondents. This thesis is based on both the method of participant observation and the biographical study. It uses the scheme of social drama introduced by Victor Witter Turner to demonstrate the role of a ritual within a community, even as its impact on the individual lives. In the study we can follow the process of entering the community through the eyes of the nuns...
