SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF FISH IN LAKE TURKANA, KENYA
MUŠKA, Milan
The knowledge of fish spatial distribution is essential for fish stock assessments and management. The aim of this study was to describe the fish spatial distribution in the vertical and horizontal point of view, estimate parameters of pelagic fish assemblage and compare this results with historical data.
Spatial distribution of fish in reservoirs and lakes
MUŠKA, Milan
This thesis is focused on the fish spatial distribution and its changes mainly during the diel cycle. In the first part, I described the fish spatial distribution in the tropical lake ecosystem of Lake Turkana. The second part deals with the fish spatial distribution in a temperate reservoir on the different spatial scales from in/offshore habitats over the fine-scale to the level of individuals. The linkage of fish distribution patterns with selected environmental variables was also evaluated.

The first Czech methodology for the assessment of ecological potential of heavily modified water bodies and artificial water bodies based on fish communities was developed. The first step of developing the methodology was preparing the typology of water bodies. The typology distinguishes between water bodies of different altitudes and with and without thermal stratification. Fish were sampled by multimesh gillnets following European standard procedures. The selection of fish metrics was based on statistical analyses in which metrics (fish community indicators) were correlated with the most common stressor – eutrophication. The analysis detected several sensitive metrics (metrics showing the best correlation with the stressor) in which ecological class boundaries were set. Afterwards, combination of sensitive metrics was used for calculation of the ecological quality ratio (EQR) for each of the reservoir sampled. The EQR expresses the deviation between a reservoir’s current ecological status and its maximum potential. The next step consisted of validating the EQR with an independent pressure index and verifying the time stability of ecological potential assessment. The metrics used in the methodology fulfill all the obligations set forth in the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), which include assessment of the composition, abundance and age structure of fish fauna.
Effect of demographic changes on life insurance
Muška, Martin ; Radová, Jarmila (advisor) ; Pavelka, František (referee)
This work is focused mostly on the demographic data published by Czech statistical office and Czech insurance association. In the field of demography is monitored mainly the development of population, age composition and life expectancy. There is also displayed the calculation method of the insurance premium, the development of written premium and indemnity. There is described the effect of mortality tables to calculate premiums and the connecion between other measured variables. It turned out, that the development of indicators of the life insurance market is different than it should be, based on demographic development. Therefore it seems, that there are other, stronger influences affecting the insurance market.
How shall we study the fish stock of our large water reservoirs?

Quantitative fish stock assessment recently advanced significantly in the Czech Republic. Sampling of open water was facilitated by application of scientific echosounders, trawls, Nordic multimesh gillnets, purse seines and booming electoshockers. Simplified combination of the above methods was recommended for the monitoring of larger stagnant water the Water Framework Directive of EU. Combination of all above approaches with more classic ones (beach seining, benthic gillnets) is being used for „complex fish stock assessment“ providing the assessment of abundance, biomass, species and age composition of all important species in all important habitats of the reservoirs. Further improvements of results is likely to be achieved by the application of multibeam acoustic cameras and by mitigation of the problems connected with quantitative trawling of large fish
Ontogeny of coloration patterns in Neotropical cichlids of the Tribe Heroini (TELEOSTEI: CICHLIDAE: CICHLASOMATINAE)
Muška, Milan ; Říčan, O. ; Novák, J.
We have studied the ontogeny of Cichlid fishes of the tribe Heroini, using developmental series. By observing the development of pigment patterns in larval, juvenile and adult cichlids, the homologous elements of the lateral barring pattern have been hypothesized. Although pigmentation is often disregarded as a source of characters containing historical information, the congruence of many of these characters with a recent phylogeny of heroini, suggest their utility. A common mechanism underlying pattern formation is suggested based on similarities between Neotropical and African Cichlids.
