From this social status as well as numerous scandals of modern art in this conservative society will be explained the organization of the cultural life of the young generation of artists. Furthermore there will also be introduced the Modernism in painting, architecture and music by their major artists. Similarly, in literature will be presented Hermann Bahr as an organizer of the literary group Young Vienna and his biggest opponent Karl Kraus, the satirist of his time. Thematically, the work of the authors of Young Vienna is divided into three areas, namely into the image of the society, which is mainly reflected in the work of Arthur Schnitzler and Peter Altenberg, aestheticism, which is also the subject of the most important works by Leopold Andrian, Richard Beer-Hofmann and the early dramas of Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The last theme is Chandos-Brief, written by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, which is a document of the language crisis in this time.

Female characters in the work of Franz Kafka
Svobodová, Karolína ; Weinberg, Manfred (advisor) ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (referee)
The thesis deals with female characters in selected works by Franz Kafka (1883-1924), the well known representative of the Prague German literature. These works include the short story The Metamorphosis (1915) and the posthumously published novel fragments The Man Who Disappeared (1927), The Trial (1925) and The Castle (1926). The thesis discusses how the individual female characters are portrayed in these texts, what role they play in the protagonist's life and how they influence him. At the forefront, there is an interaction between the male main characters and the female characters. The thesis proceeds mainly in a textanalytical way without making any connections between fictional women in the works of the author and real women in his life. At first, the female characters in each of the selected texts are separately analysed and then they are compared. The conclusion serves for a comparison of all female characters in these works and for a formulation of a general statement about them.
The Snake as Means of Reflection in the Texts about Artists from the German Romantic Period
Balcarová, Markéta ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Weinberg, Manfred (referee) ; Bartl, Andrea (referee)
The submitted doctoral thesis examines the function and performance of the motive of a snake in four selected texts about artists of the German romantic period and perceives the snake as an attribute reflecting the problems of the artistic existence and a way to the artistic work, possibly of the artistic work at all. When interpreting the single motives of the snake, three-phase procedure as applied by Erwin Panofsky in description of the motives in the pictures has been chosen by analogy for literary texts. The interpretation is based on the structural position of the motive of the snake in the text and its performance in the text. Subsequently, the principal role is revelation of contexts which updates the given motive of the snake - in particular they are biblical snakes, mythical snakes and a serpentine line as a line of beauty which was the subject of the period aesthetic discourse. The meaning of the motive of the snake in the texts is given primarily by the mutual interaction of theme contexts which is in the single texts realized by various ways. The motive of the snake as formed in the single interpreted texts is a highly complex motive in all the cases. Thanks to the possibility of connotation with the snakes from the sphere of the Bible and mythology the literary motive of the snake becomes a...

Balvínová, Markéta ; Zbytovský, Štěpán (advisor) ; Weiland, Marc (referee)
The thesis introduces the reception of the oeuvre of one of the leading forces behind Viennese modernism in Czech and German-speaking literary and theatre life in the Czech lands. First, there is a brief introduction of Schnitzler's poetics and the broader context of the relationships between Czech and Viennese modernism under scrutiny. After that, the thesis focuses on the beginnings of the reception of Schnitzler's work in the Czech lands and further maps the important streams of reception in Czech and in German-speaking critique and in reactions of the personae involved in cultural life of the Czech lands. It attempts to find out how the local Czech and German reception of Schnitzler was on the Prague stages and which analogical or contradicting tendencies can be observed in the literary critical and essayistic interpretations. The reception during the author's lifetime is enriched by (possible) immediate personal contact, therefore the investigation is limited to the period until Schnitzler's death in 1931.
