The changing image of Prague after 1989 in the eyes of tourists

The subject of this thesis is the changing image of Prague after 1989 in the eyes of Spanish and English speaking tourists. After the "velvet revolution", the city has undergone many changes. With the liberalization of trade, restitutions of property and foreign investment, tourism infrastructure has been growing rapidly to accommodate the thousands of tourists who were flowing in to see the newly accessible city. As a result, the city and its residents have been facing many new challenges, acculturation processes and increasing globalization. The aim of this thesis is to explore the views of tourists, who visited Prague repeatedly since the beginning of the 90th to the present, on the changes of the city as well as the whole Czech society. The methodology employed included participant observation and semi-structured interviews. The research was conducted in the historical center of the city during 2010-2011 and subsequently through e-mail communication with the tourist participants. The work is complemented with quantitative statistical data describing the development of tourism in Prague. Based on the theory of the anthropology of tourism and the study of tourism, this work monitors acculturation and globalization processes leeding to the mcdonaldization of work, disneyzation and deurbanization...

of diploma thesis Title: Strangers at home - In Search of Indigenous Identity at the Suburbs of a Glocal Mexican City Student: Marie Heřmanová Tutor: Mgr. Radovan Haluzík The presented thesis is based on a fieldwork realized during five months in the city of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas in south of Mexico and deals with different strategies through which are young Tzotziles and Tzeltales living in the new suburbs of the old colonial city constructing their identity. Main axes of the thesis are first the relationship of these young people to the native communities of their parents and second to the rich and turistic city centre. As a main ethnographic method I use participant observation and also the material culture studies ( the tesis focus mostly on identification through visage and consequently on the consitution of identity through styles and modes of dressing).

Obsah publikace vychází z jednotlivých aktivit projektu Rovné šance na prahu českých domácností – právní a sociální poradenství, medializace a komunikační kampaň a především z výsledků unikátního kvantitativního výzkumu mezi pracovnicemi v cizí domácnosti v České republice. Obsahuje jednak uvedení do tématu nájemné práce v domácnosti, informace o kampani a projektových aktivitách, základní výsledky výzkumu, příběhy migrantek a především legislativní doporučení ke zlepšení postavení pracovnic v domácnosti v ČR.
