Charity donation analysis
Wiesnerová, Jana ; Melzochová, Jitka (advisor) ; Kovanda, Lukáš (referee)
This thesis analyses effects of various factors on the likelihood of charity contribution using probit models, focusing on donations only. The main data source was the MML-TGI database 2012 developed by Median, s.r.o. In this work, two models are built using different explanatory variables. Both models support the hypothesis of the thesis that higher probability of participation in the donation is expected from women. The first model was able to demonstrate the influence of age and educational attainment on the likelihood of financial donations paid to charities. The highest increase in the probability was recorded for ages 40-45 years and graduates. In the second model, further dependence of donation on political orientation, net monthly income and marital status was tested. It has been proven that we can expect the highest probability for married women and married men, as well as the right-wing oriented people and people with an income between CZK 15,001 to CZK 30,000 per month.
Evaluating the Determining Factors of Income Inequality across the US States
Petruš, Dávid ; Bartoš, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Kovanda, Lukáš (referee)
What explains the development of inequality in the United States after the World War II? Which factors contribute to the evolution? A growing inequality is a phenomenon caused by rather secular factors, such as growing demand for skills, though short-run, time-specific factors can explain some of the difference too. This thesis summarizes some of the most prominent works in the field of economic inequality and provides additional evidence by analyzing the recent data. Further parts provide a cross-sectional analysis of US counties, congressional districts, and states and seeks to evaluate the key factors related with income inequality measured by Gini coefficient. The distribution of education and human capital are among the most important factors in both time-series and cross-sectional analysis.
Economics of star players - Do Czech people demand star players on the professional football players market more?
Kotrba, Vojtěch ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Kovanda, Lukáš (referee)
This paper investigates presence of the superstar effect among users of the Czech fantasy league during seasons between years 2010 and 2013. Both main views are taken into consideration, namely Rosen's and also Adler's theory. Using regression models employing the method of least squares for panel data I show a positive superstar effect according to Rosen's theory in case when the star players are defined by their ability to score great amounts of goals. The presence of a positive superstar effect according to Adler's theory is not apparent in the models, which can be caused by the authors of the fantasy league overestimating the value of the star players beside their performance.
Theoretical and methodological approaches to determining the macroeconomic contribution of primary prevention and health promotion
Voleman, Jakub ; Chytil, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Kovanda, Lukáš (referee)
Health is one of the most important things in human life and it also deeply affects its quality. Health prevention and promotion is fundamental both for individuals and the whole society. This thesis analyses the economic approaches to health prevention and promotion. The main aim of this thesis is the analysis of health promotion with respect to colorectal cancer. However, this is not a standard effectiveness analysis but the analysis of the future development in unique Czech environment. According to Czech demographic trends and based on incidence and mortality predictive ARIMA models for colorectal cancer, this work quantifies the increasing costs related to this disease treatment in 2024 and 2028. Also, it makes recommendations on possible spending on possible prevention related to this disease.
Pacific Alliance as Counterpart to Mercosur – Underestimated Markets of Latin America for Czech Business
Skřička, Vojtěch ; Čermáková, Klára (advisor) ; Kovanda, Lukáš (referee)
This thesis focuses on two integration blocks in Latin America -- the Pacific Alliance and MERCOSUR. The analysis should confirm the hypothesis that the integrated countries converge faster than non-integrated. With use of beta-convergence and sigma-convergence approaches, this hypothesis was rejected for the two Latin American integration groups. It is also supposed that market-led policies should diverge from the protectionist countries in terms of per capita income. However, this hypothesis was not neither confirmed, nor rejected for the observed region and time period. The income growth analysis showed that the Pacific Alliance countries are less dependent on their initial incomes than MERCOSUR members. However, the macroeconomic data exhibit multicollinearity, autocorrelation and unit root generated process. The explanatory coefficients likely lose their statistical significance, when this is controlled for. Therefore, the lower growth dependence in the Pacific Alliance integration on initial income cannot be fully confirmed.
Are more children being born during economic recessions? The example of the United States of America
Mihalko, Jan ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Kovanda, Lukáš (referee)
The thesis focuses on the issue of individuals' preferences regarding the acquisition of a child during the business cycle expressed in unemployment rates for men and women. Fixed effects model involving robust estimates of standard deviations on a panel dataset tested for the period 1980-2012 confirmed the significance of the relationship between sex-specific unemployment rates and fertility rate of the United States of America. The results of the analysis show a negative relationship documenting pro-cyclical nature of the fertility. There is a less willingness of couples to conceive a child with the growth in unemployment. It does not show the prevalence of substitution effect of reducing opprtunity costs for women during the recession over the effect of reduction in income. Among other statistically significant variables that affect fertility belong the degree of attainment of university education, the poverty rate and abortion rate.
An analysis of the determinants of suicide rates in OECD countries
Hainz, Filip ; Kovanda, Lukáš (advisor) ; Čermáková, Klára (referee)
This bachelor thesis analyzes the impact of selected socioeconomic factors on suicide rates among 32 OECD countries between years 2005-2010. Based on analysis by fixed and random effects method, the thesis confirms 2 stated hypothesis, which are: 1. Suicide rate is negatively correlated with GDP per capita, 2. Suicide rate is positively correlated with unemployment. Analysis implies that increase of GDP per capita leads to decrease in suicide rate by approximately 0,3 %. To the contrary, increase of unemployment by 1 percentage point leads to increase in suicide rate by about 1 %. Other identified significant factors are: alcohol consumption per capita and average hours worked in employment which positively, respectively negatively correlate with suicide rate. Findings mentioned above are consistent with sociological hypothesis stated by Henry and Short and economical hypothesis stated by Hamermesh and Soss.
Crime and Religion
Ševčík, Jan ; Kovanda, Lukáš (advisor) ; Svoboda, Miroslav (referee)
This bachelor thesis analyzes relationship between number of Christians and criminality. It tests a hypothesis that there is a negative effect of number of religious people on number of crimes. This effect is tested on 7 categories of crime: murder, rape, assault, burglary, larceny, robbery and total crime. Data used in model are from 2011, when there was a census in Czech Republic. 14 regions of Czech Republic are analyzed with OLS method. Negative effect of religion was found statistically significant on burglary and total crime.
Analysis of Thoroughbred auctions in Czech republic
Wimmerová, Tereza ; Kovanda, Lukáš (advisor) ; Rod, Aleš (referee)
Price determinants and presence of adverse selection in Thoroughbred market are extensively explored in foreign countries, but not in Czech Republic and this is the first work on the data of Central European auction of Thoroughbreds. Using hedonic pricing model and a regression analysis has been found on data about 54 horses, that significant price determinants are the year of holding the auction (2008 and 2010), age of horse and its gender, Velka pardubicka steeplechase eligibility, foreign origin and quality of horses's dam. Buyers likely distinguish between two types of sellers and are willing to pay less to those sellers, who likely select adversely, but the significance hasn't been certified. Results of an online form support the results of the model.
Analyses of the factors affecting municipal policeman performance
Novotný, Marek ; Kovanda, Lukáš (advisor) ; Pichaničová, Ludmila (referee)
The bachelor thesis is talking about efficiency of municipal policeman in Prachatice. It is serving summary of factors that can influence their work efficiency. Also it analyses influence of the chosen factors. Based on regression analysis I evaluate data from panel model of the years 2010 -- 2013 and I show correlation of tobacco addiction and efficiency of municipal policeman. Then I prove correlation between increased traffic of inhabitants in the centre of the town (it is shown on the car taxes income and the season) and whole municipal police work. As the outcome of regression model is shown that smoking policeman has lesser efficiency -- he makes 24% less work than his non-smoking colleague. It means that non-smoking policeman makes 1,5 actions per shift more than smoking one.
