Argument in a myth, myth in an argument
Čaban, Martin ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
The main goal of this paper was to try to discover and describe the conceptual relationship between argument and myth. For this purpose we created a methodological instrument established as a combination of methodology developed by Trudy Govier (1997) for evaluating arguments and the barthesian methodology of discovering myths in texts of the public discourse (Barthes, 2004). As we had to demonstrate this relationship on some part of the public discourse, we made a sample of 24 commentaries from three Czech dailies, because the tradition of the genre and also some weakening genre-normatives describe the commentary as a text structure which is supposed to contain not just the opinion of the author, but also some reasons for accepting this opinion, some evidence for it, somekind of defending the author's point of view. In one word - a commentary is supposed to contain some argumentation. Commentaries as a part of the newspaper are also a part of the public discourse and as such they, according to barthesian concept of myth, should be bearing some characteristics of this discourse, among which the myths are of a considerable importance. Media impact on Czech language : (on example of using moved and not moved forms of women surnames)
Sehnalová, Lucie ; Šebesta, Karel (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
This diploma thesis is dealing with motion of surnames according to gender and their forms in Czech media. In the beginning the formation of surnames is described; chapters considering the grammar rules shows not only how to move surnames, but also how to declension surnames and integrate them into the text. In the diploma thesis I tried to mention standard surnames as well as those surnames which can cause problems while we embody them into Czech texts. To found out how to correctly integrate surnames into the Czech language and if Czech media adhere to the rules was the goal of my diploma thesis. Motion of surnames according to the gender is considered to be very controversial and questionable, and that is why contradictory arguments and comments are added to the chapters which are dealing with this problem. Language is influenced by media majorly. That was the reason I made a research to found out how our media use Czech women surnames in the second part of this work. As I have noticed, different newspapers and magazines have differend approaches to motion of surnames and the rules should be regularized and consolidated according to my opinion. For the researched media it is possible to use this part of my work and the deductions I made in their redaction codexes. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Interactive narrative in the era of the digital storytelling
Kohutová, Radka ; Kraus, Jiří (advisor) ; Jirák, Jan (referee)
Stories are the cornerstone of common cultural understanding, creativity, and even socialisation and language. They surround us and stimulate us, entertain us, engage us, and even horrify us. We tell them every day and even participate in and create them just by living our lives and interacting with others. Being human simply means being part of a narrative on our journeys through life-right from infancy with the exposure to fairy-tales that afford us the chance to understand and decode our first stories along with language that introduces us to basic concepts like right and wrong. In fact, Tilley claims that "We are socialized through narrative forms, which offer stories to moderate behaviour ('Don't do that or...'), to develop language ('Mary, Mary, quite contrary...'), to engage the imagination ('Beware the wolf in the forest...') or to make us laugh ('This little piggy went to market...')." (Tilley, 1992: 53) Here is also where we are first introduced to the traditional structure and organizing principles behind the phenomenon of storytelling-narrative. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Sign systems of visual forms of mediated contents
Elfmarková, Šárka ; Šoltys, Otakar (advisor) ; Kraus, Jiří (referee)
As there is no world outside media, we have no choice to avoid receiving, consuming and interpreting contents which are media giving us. This inescapable situation leads us to study media and its new trends. The special field of current interest in media communication is an interest on "the new media". The interdisciplinary point of view on media enables to study very complex problems of topical cultural change from the verbal to the visual communication. The language as a dynamic code is under still current evolution and is the result of negotiation of its users. It is constructed from the signs which play important role in constitution of the meaning. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
