The poetic of primordial elements in the poetry of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen

The pressented thesis: " The Poetics of the primordial elements in the poetry of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen" explores the poetics of the sifnicicant Portuguese poet of the 20th century. We try to trace the literary evolution of the poetess in the thesis, we observe if there important changes appear in the poetess' manner of writing during her longstanding artistic career and, in particular, we explore the influense of the primordial elements on her poetry. At first we describe Andresen's books of poetry and we attend to the dominant themes of her creation - Nature, motifs of Ancient Greece, Christianity and the denomination of the things. In the second part of the thesis we explore the influence of the primordial elements on the poetic imagination of the poetess. We, gradually, discover the possible interpretations of the priomordial elements - water, earth, fire and air in her poetry. Our research is, to a certain extent, based on the works of the French psychologist Gaston Bachelard and the Portuguese literary critic Carlos Ceia.
Cesário Verde, poet of reality

Diplomová práce nesoucí název "Cesário Verde, básník skutečnosti" se zabývá odkazem významného portugalského básníka konce 19. století se zvláštním ohledem věnovaným jeho vztahu ke skutečnosti. V úvodní kapitole jsou nastíněny především portugalské společensko-historické a kulturní souvislosti básníkova života spolu s biografickým přehledem. V následujících kapitolách se naše pozornost již plně zaměřuje na Verdovy verše vydané díky neutuchajícímu úsilí Joela Serra v souborné publikaci Obra Completa de Cesário Verde. Po úvodní kritické připomínce k prvnímu vydání Verdovy posmrtné sbírky přistupujeme k hlubšímu zkoumání formálních aspektů básní. Zvlášť podrobně je sledována tvářnost hlavních tematických linií, kterými jsou město, venkov, žena a smrt. Tyto motivy jsou zkoumány především z hlediska básníkovy smyslové percepce světa, odrazu jeho osobní zkušenosti a nové společenské reality Získané vědění je následně uplatněno při rozboru Verdovy strhující básně "O Sentimento dum Ocidental". Naše poznání je opřeno především o kritickou studii Heldera Maceda, předního interpreta Verdova díla, a statě významných literárních kritiků, k nimž se řadí mimo jiné prof. Cabral Martins, Jacinto do Prado Coelho či David Mouro-Ferreira. Jejich podnětné závěry nám umožní sledovat, jak se v průběhu času mění Verdovo chápání...
Manifestation of free will in short stories of Miguel Torga

Key words: characters, free choice, free will, motivation, relations with authorities This thesis is focused on work of Portuguese writer Miguel Torga, author of an extensive corpus of poetic as well as prosaic works. Since this literary study is the first study of his work, the opening part of the thesis is focused on author's life and on putting his work into historical and literary context of that time. Second part of the thesis concentrates primarily on literary analysis of two selected collections of short stories, in which Miguel Torga returns to rural background of his childhood. Into this environment with archaic and pagan attributes Torga introduces strong and unique characters, who are often confronted with critical situations. At such moments author can expose characters' qualities to reader together with their motivation, relations to other individuals, to present community or to other authorities. Analysis of these basic factors enables resulting study of an existence of free will of characters and of possible manifestation of their free will in comparison to selected elements of philosophy of existentialism, which was arising in that time.
The noise of death: Raul Brandão's Humus and the problems of its translation into Slovak

Raul Brando's Humus is incontestably one of the most important works of fiction in Portuguese literature of the beginning of the twentieth century and it brings a number of innovations on the formal as well as on the ideological level. The specificity due to these innovations makes it a book the translation of which represents very particular difficulties. The paper, based on a philological analysis of the novel, identifies these difficulties and searches for usable solutions, bringing a translation of selected parts of the book into Slovak. It is divided into three parts. The first is a brief presentation of the author's work and places him in the context of portuguese and european literature. The second analyses Humus with regard to the aspects of the novel which are crucial for the understanding necessary as a base for a translation attempt. The third part exposes the general conception of the translation and its theorical bases not omitting the explanation of the choice of tha parts of the text to be translated. Expected specific problems of the translation are presented as well as suggestions of possible solutions to these. Follows the translation itself, several encountered problems are subsequently analyzed and the choices of solutions reasoned and exemplified. The conclusion establishes a hierarchy...
Motif of water in Teolinda Gersão's novel The Silence

This work deals with the motive of water in the novel The Silence of contemporary Portuguese author Teolinda Gersão, from 1981. The book is described as a key work of Portuguese women's work of the 20th century and also as a literary milestone of the period after the Carnation Revolution. The objective of this paper is to find and analyse various forms of water, from the sea, through the rain, to tears, which function as symbols of freedom, dreams and change and their connection with female protagonists. Gaston Bachelard's study Water and Dreams and Teolinda Gersão's short story book Free water are helpful guidelines for interpretation. Part of the paper is a chapter devoted to the life and work of the author and the historical and social context in which the novel was written.
Symbol of the path in Branquinho da Fonseca's short stories O Barão and Rio Turvo

The bachelor's thesis deals with the symbol of the journey in the short stories "Restless River" (Rio Turvo, 1942) and "Baron" (O Barão, 1942), authored by Branquinho da Fonseca, a Portuguese writer who is part of the second generation of Portuguese modernists associated with the magazine Presença. In the short story "Restless River", the Topographer sets out on his new work on an unknown, not very populated peninsula, and in the short story "Baron", a school Inspector travels to the remote Barroso Mountains. Both protagonists embark on a physical pilgrimage, which becomes unusual and mysterious at the very beginning. They experience encounters with extraordinary people, which forever change their view of not only the world, but above all their own lives. Free will in José Saramago's novels

This work deals with the motive of free will in novels of Portuguese author from 20th century José Saramago, specifically in novels The Elephant's journey, Cain, and Baltasar and Blimunda. The objective of this paper is to find and analyze different forms of free will in texts and its relation with social problems. The main philosophical basis for this paper is the book Freedom evolves from American deterministic philosopher Daniel C. Dennett, which deals with the relation between free will, society and responsibility. This paper also concerns about the postmodern characters of Saramago's work, especially about the specific attitude to history. The main clue was the study from Lubomír Doležel History in the time of postmodernism.
Animal Characters in Portuguese and Brazilian Folk Literature

In this work we deal with an analysis of roles occupied by seven animal characters chosen from Portuguese and Brazilian folk literatures. Our objective is to find out if it is possible that different animals from different places represent the same characteristics for which they are chosen to a specific story. The main part of our work is divided in two parts entitled "Shrewdness" and "Naivety and stupidity x strength and voracity". Within the first chapter we analyze the fox and the chick, representatives from Portugal and the turtle, the golden hare and the monkey that represent Brazil. The second chapter contains only two representatives, the wolf for the Portuguese folk literature and the jaguar for the Brazilian one. This chapter is complicated because the two representatives fill multiple functions that can form opposition to each other. In the introduction we explain the important terms like folklore, oral folk literature, animal tale, fable, myth and legend. Then we also mention the crucial points that characterize the both folk literatures. We discover that the animal tales and fables are typical for Portugal whereas in Brazil we will mostly talk about myths and legends. The Beginnings of Czech Translation from Portuguese and Brazilian Literatures (1898-1948)

The present diploma thesis is focused on the history of Czech translations from Portuguese and Brazilian literatures between 1898, when the first book translation from Portuguese was published, and 1948, when the Czechoslovak coup d'état took place, causing changes in the reception of foreign literatures. The first part of the thesis includes a theoretical model of research in the history of translation, a list of examined translations, a brief summary of Czech- Portuguese and Czech-Brazilian relations, an insight into Czech publishing activity and a reflection on Portuguese language literatures in Czech periodicals. The second part of the thesis deals with all sixteen book translations and, to a limited extent, also magazine and manuscript translations. This part presents information about the original books and their authors and it deals with the circumstances of the origin and publication of their translations, the personalities of the translators, publishers and, last but not least, the reception of the translations on the Czech literary scene.
