Sustainable Asphalt Recyclate Base Course
Spies, Karel ; Tanečková, Pavlína
In the construction industry nowadays, it is the concepts such as sustainability, recycling, emission and energy reduction which are coming to the fore. This article follows the same path, looking at the design of new, recycled road subbase layers. These layers are almost 100% composed of recovered reclaimed asphalt, crushed to the appropriate fraction. This reclaimed asphalt is either mixed with a suitable binder, heated to a low temperature, or a combination of both effects occurs. The research described in this paper is partially related to the newly developed standard ČSN 73 6147 Cold recycling of pavement structural layers [1]. The aim of this research is to economically and environmentally reuse reclaimed asphalts of lower quality, specifically in the subbase layer of pavements. Otherwise, this precious material is mainly used for the backfilling of roadsides.
Evaluation of Traffic Noise
Mejzlík, Martin ; Spies, Karel (referee) ; Kudrna, Jan (advisor)
This thesis deals with issue of traffic noise, its measurement and data evaluation. Theoretic part of my work concretes basic information about acoustics and also describes and analyzes traffic noise sources of tire/pavement. Next part deals with quite pavement and with measurement methods of traffic noise. Practical part of my thesis contains description, results and evaluation of realized measurement with methods CPX and SPB.
Bituminous mixture for wearing course with increased content of reclaimed asphalt
Spies, Karel ; Šperka, Pavel (referee) ; Kudrna, Jan (advisor)
The bachelor thesis deals with design of asphalt mixture for wearing course, by performing functional tests according to ČSN EN 12697 (736160) Bituminous mixtures - Test methods for hot asphalt mixtures and comparison of its properties with asphalt concrete for wearing course (ACO 11 +) according to ČSN EN 13108-1 ed. 2 (736140) Bituminous mixtures - Specification for materials - Part 1: Bituminous concrete. The proposed layer is characterized by a high (50%) reclaimed asphalt pavement content (RAP) and the use of a crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB) without the use of rejuvenators or other softening additives. The aim of the work is to verify the expected properties of the asphalt mixture and point out the possibility of using larger amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement in asphalt mixtures.
Evaluation and modelling of Traffic Noise
Černoch, Adam ; Spies, Karel (referee) ; Kudrna, Jan (advisor)
The task of the master's thesis is introduction with the problems of traffic noise, focusing on noise from road traffic. There is a description what is the noise, how it is formed, its resources and what are the methods of measuring. The following are the various noise reduction measures such as noise barriers and low noise pavements. The main attention is devoted to the noise generated at the tire / road that is reduced by these pavements. The practical part describes the implemented measurements on individual sections at various locations in our country. The measurement was carried by slightly modified method CPX with reference tire directly at the vehicle. The main aim was to evaluate the measurement data, make comparison of different low-noise surfaces with each other and with the commonly used surfaces. Then quantification of the rate reduction of the noise emission for a given section and verification of input data for noise modeling. In conclusion, the obtained results are summarized and based on them were confirmed very good acoustic properties with the recommendation to continue with measurements in the future.
Evaluation of pavement surface noise reductions
Mejzlík, Martin ; Spies, Karel (referee) ; Kudrna, Jan (advisor)
The aim of the bachelor´s thesis is to make an introduction to quiet pavements, analyzing the sources of tire/pavement noise, study the principles of this pavement and summarize their properties. This thesis deals with method of measurement tire/pavement noise and evaluate the concrete measurements. The main aim of the thesis is to evaluate measurement in Zádveřice near Zlín.
Innovative Asphalt Mixtures for Wearing Course with a Higher Content of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement
Spies, Karel ; Hegr, Zdeněk (referee) ; Šperka, Pavel (advisor)
This master's thesis deals with the design of two asphalt mixtures for a wearing course containing 35 % R-material. The asphalt mixtures use a soft bitumen modified with crumb rubber (CRMB) or the unmodified soft binder itself with a penetration grade of 70/100. The work verifies the effect of crumb rubber as a bitumen modifier on the properties of the asphalt mixture with reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). At the same time, the work deals with the possibility of using higher amounts of reclaimed asphalt pavement only in combination with a softer binder without the use of rejuvenating additives. The properties of asphalt binders and mixtures are verified using suitable functional tests. Furthermore, the proposed mixtures and their results are compared from various perspectives. At the same time, the thesis in the theoretical part deals with the dosing of a reclaimed asphalt pavement into the asphalt mixture and describes the handling and use of reclaimed asphalt pavement in the Czech Republic and abroad
Full-Scale Pavement Model for Testing of Non-Rigid Pavement Structures Not Only from Recycled Materials
Spies, Karel
The utilisation of recycled materials in pavement construction layers is slowly becoming a major issue in road construction. However, the testing and use of these materials in pavement structures may be different from pavements made of new materials. Therefore, this paper discusses the issue of using recycled materials, especially reclaimed asphalt, in pavement structures. In the main part, the paper focuses on testing the entire road structure using a Full-Scale model. The next part explains the reasons for implementing this model in pavement testing and summarizes the selected foreign literature on the subject. The paper then concludes with possible future methods that could be used to improve the obtained measurement results and to bring the model closer to the actual conditions.
