A Spectacle in Circus - Distraction, Concentration?
Machalíková, Pavla
The text takes as its starting point the thesis of Jonathan Crary about the fragmentation of modern society and modern perception. As an example, it takes circus posters and announcements for the Bich circus society in Prague shortly after 1800. It analyses circus as a specific type of modern spectacle which manipulates the perception of the viewer in ways similar to manipulations in modern art.
Jan Quirin Jahn and the dictionary of the history of art? (Beginning of the history of the art in Bohemia)
Annual Gifts of the Art Union in Prague during the 2nd half of the 19th Century
Donné, Tereza ; Prahl, Roman (advisor) ; Machalíková, Pavla (referee)
In the beginning my thesis deals with the Kunstvereins, artistic associations which achieved significant development in the first half of the 19th century. It also concerns with the history of Krasoumna jednota (Fine Arts Union) - the first Czech society founded purely for spreading art among general public by means of releasing annual gifts and organizing yearly exhibitions. The work also treats shortly Spolecnost vlasteneckych pratel umeni (Society of Patriotic Friends of the Arts) which initiated the activity of Krasoumna jednota. The text itself analyzes development of graphic techniques used in the annual graphic gifts. It clarifies the significance of the gifts released by the art societies, deals with the selected gifts of the Krasoumna jednota and their inspiration with emphasis on engravers of German origin. In the end the work briefly compares three Czech societies for spreading of art which coexisted at the same time, and their gifts; Krasoumna jednota, Jednota umelcu vytvornych and Umelecka beseda.
The birth of country folk
Machalíková, Pavla ; Winter, Tomáš
The text is a preface of the proceedings of Pilsen Symposium. It explains a basic topic of the book.
The birth of the people in the Czech culture of the 19th century. Proceedings of the 39th interdisciplinary symposium on 19th century
Machalíková, Pavla ; Petrasová, Taťána ; Winter, Tomáš
The theme of the nascent country folk in the Czech culture of the 19-th century does not concert only the past but has strong resonances also in the present. Since the 19-th century there has been arising a rather stereotype concept about the character, protagonists, and importance of the phenomane of folk culture. On the other hand, artistic reflection of traditional folk culture testifies to the variety of inspirations offered by this environment. The essays collected in the book grasp the phenomena from interdisciplinary points of view.
Figure portrayal in Czech painting of the second third of the 19 century in European context
Řezáč, Jan ; Prahl, Roman (advisor) ; Machalíková, Pavla (referee) ; Musil, Roman (referee)
In my Ph.D. Thesis I suggest methodological approach to the figural painting of the middle of the 19 century, creation of the Czech painter Josef Manes in particular. In this period figural artists still learned to copy historic models in both academic and non-academic institutions. But the figure starts to be also presented as identifying element of the society, newly establishing nations in particular. Also emancipation of artists and their effort for conceptual expression (self-representation) is reflected in the presented figural form. Painting of the European late romanticism is characterised by adoptions of Michelangelo's and manieristic way of portrayal of human body. Thus there is a remarkable shift from so far popular classical Raffaelo's renaissance figure. For Josef Manes, usually only graphic patterns were available. In this thesis I also analyse Manes's anthropomorfisations and his tendencies to deform anatomic proportions of depicted figures. I show that these features of Manes's art have social, mental and formal background. I aimed to find interpretations of Manes's artistic approach, probably influenced by ideas from Munich, Düsseldorf and Vienna. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
