THERMAL DECOMPOSITION OF SOLID BIOFUELS AND ASSOCIATED FINE PARTICLE GENERATION
Sitek, Tomáš ; Ličbinský, Roman (referee) ; Svěrák, Tomáš (referee) ; Pospíšil, Jiří (advisor)
Despite otherwise indisputable advantages, biomass burning is associated with significant emissions of fine particles. The different behavior of dissimilar types of biomass during thermal decomposition can be explained to some extent by the different composition, i.e. the different content of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The main aim of this work was to find the emission characteristics of these three components during heating in a thermogravimetric analyzer. The monitored parameters were the heating rate and the oxygen content in the combustion atmosphere. The output is the dependence of the sample mass and also the corresponding distributions of particles on the temperature. The results show considerable differences between the individual samples, but in general the pyrolysis of cellulose produces the highest particle emissions. Higher oxygen content in the combustion atmosphere and lower heating rates cause earlier sample decomposition and reduce particulate emissions. This is followed by an evaluation of the transferability to a sample of a real biomass based on its known composition using a simple weighted arithmetic mean. Useful information on particle sampling and electron microscope visualization, supplemented by images of particles from the pyrolysis of selected samples can also be found in this work.
Characterization of Metals in Atmospheric Aerosol
Cigánková, Hana ; Ličbinský, Roman (referee) ; Vojtíšek,, Michal (referee) ; Krajčovič, Jozef (advisor)
The presented doctoral thesis deals with the characterization of elements in two size fractions of urban aerosol, which was sampled in all seasons on the terrace of the Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the CAS in Brno in 2018. The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes the basic information about the analysis and health risks of atmospheric aerosol and metals bound to aerosol. Furthermore, the work describes methods for determining the inhalation bioaccessibility of aerosol particles and methods used for the determination of oxidative potential. The first part of the thesis describes in detail the sampling and analysis of urban aerosol particles. The mass concentration of both aerosol size fractions and the total concentration of 21 elements were determined. The probable sources of the analysed elements were calculated using the enrichment factor and positive matrix factorization. The second part of the thesis deals with the determination of the oxidative potential of the aerosol and bioaccessible concentration of the analysed elements in three simulated lung fluids (deionized water, simulated alveoli fluid, Gamble solution). In addition to determining the oxidative potential of real samples, the oxidative potential of individual elements was also analysed. From the obtained results was calculated the probable contribution of the elements to the measured oxidative potential.
Toxicity Assessment of Firewaters
Rybková, Tereza ; Ličbinský, Roman (referee) ; Adamec, Vladimír (advisor)
The issue of toxic extinguishing water is currently getting more to the fore. When a fire arises a wide range of hazardous substances that may negatively affect the quality of some components of the environment. A significant problem can be then extinguishing water runoff into sewers or some components of the environment. The objective is to assess the ecotoxicological properties of extinguishing water, determine the toxicity of the extinguishing water by experiments and thus contribute to the deepening of knowledge in so very few solved problems.

Air quality monitoring in areas with high traffic load
Ličbinský, Roman ; Huzlík, Jiří ; Hegrová, Jitka
Emissions of pollutants are one of the most serious problems of transportation, particularly as a result of a significant risk to human health. The causes of emissions of pollutants to ambient air are the exhaust gases generated by the combustion of fuel in motor vehicles. They are complex mixtures containing hundreds of chemical substances at different concentrations contributing to long-term warming of the atmosphere, the so-called "greenhouse effect" or often with toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic properties for humans. The presented methodology was developed within project TE01020168 - Center for effective and sustainable transport infrastructure (CESTI) with the financial support of the Technological Agency of the Czech Republic within the Competence Centres Programme. Its aim is to unify the procedures for the implementation and evaluation of air quality monitoring in order to provide objective information on the actual status and development of air quality in areas with intensive transport. It summarizes the legislatively defined requirements for air quality monitoring and at the same time defines the pollutants whose very important source is transport and which should be monitored when assessing the impact of transport on air quality: nitrogen dioxide, (nano)particles, benzene, or platinum group elements and benzo[a]pyrene. The methodology can be used by the Ministry of Transport, road owners or their managers (ŘSD, regions and municipalities) as an effective tool for controlling both long-term monitoring and indicative measurements of air quality in the vicinity of roadways. At the same time, it will find application to metering processors and organizations providing their own air quality measurement to provide a standardized procedure to ensure a precise air quality assessment based on real data. The methodology will also help to deepen the knowledge of the staff of all the mentioned institutions and provide a standardized procedure for which, for example, contracting authorities may refer to public procurement.

Environmental and economical evaluation of clean vehicles promotion: Final report
Špička, Libor ; Dostál, Ivo ; Dufek, Jiří ; Jedlička, Jiří ; Ličbinský, Roman
This project was focused on environmental and economic assessment of tools for indirect promoting of clean vehicles. During the solution was proposed a set of possible support tools. The locality for application of tools was identified on the basis of air quality analysis. For the chosen city was created and calibrated the traffic model which was extended by two scenarios. These scenarios include a set of proposed tools for promoting of clean vehicles. The chosen scenarios were assessed environmentally and compared with the basic present state. On the basis of the environmental assessment was prepared the dispersion studies which were used as a basis for the assessment of impacts on human health. Other outputs of environmental assessment were used for the economic evaluation of proposed tools for promoting of clean vehicles.
