Analysis of the success of category A contestants in the Geography Olympiad on the example of the Praha-východ district
Konečný, Jaroslav ; Jelen, Jakub (advisor) ; Krajňáková, Lenka (referee)
The present bachelor thesis deals with the analysis of the success rate of the competitors of category A of the district round of the Geography Olympiad on the basis of their preparation for the competition. The model region of Prague-East was chosen for the analysis. The aim of the thesis is how the contestants prepared for the competition and what aspects of their preparation played a role in their subsequent success in the competition. A sub-objective was to find out whether geographically gifted pupils are found among the most successful competitors. These objectives were narrowed down to a number of research questions to which answers were sought using a questionnaire survey and focus group interviews. It was found that the preparation for the competition varied among the competitors. Some aspects of preparation play a more important role than others. A possible deficiency in some students' preparedness may be little or no involvement by teachers in the preparation process. Key words aptitude in geography, gifted student, preparation for the competition, Geography Olympiad

Dudařová, Anna ; Jelen, Jakub (advisor) ; Navrátilová, Denisa (referee)
Absctract The bachelor thesis is devoted to the topic of general atmospheric circulation and its teaching at secondary schools. In the second part, both researches and their results are presented, i.e. the content analysis of textbooks and atlases and the questionnaire survey in which 63 grammar school teachers participated. On the basis of these researches, teaching material was created, which is the subject of the last part of the thesis.
Possibilities of using elements of Waldorf and Montessori pedagogy in the teaching of geography in current schools
Frančíková, Barbora ; Matějček, Tomáš (advisor) ; Jelen, Jakub (referee)
The bachelor thesis examines which elements of Waldorf and Montessori pedagogy geography teachers utilize in their teaching at mainstream schools and further identifies potential barriers to the utilization of these elements. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part is first devoted to the definition of the alternative school. It briefly discusses the origin and development of alternative schools, their characteristics, functions and typologies. This section also includes information on two selected types of alternative schools - Waldorf and Montessori. Attention is paid to the characteristics of the main features of these schools, their development, expansion and the organisation of teaching. The main elements and principles that could bring enrichment to traditional geography teaching are described. In the practical part, an investigation is carried out using the method of semi-structured interviews with selected teachers. The information gathered is analysed to identify the barriers to the inclusion of Waldorf and Montessori elements in geography teaching in mainstream schools, as well as the elements used by teachers. Keywords: Waldorf, Montessori, alternative school, traditional school, geographic education, integration of alternative elements
Inquiry-based education focused on traffic noise pollution
Gonzálezová, Natálie ; Jelen, Jakub (advisor) ; Matějček, Tomáš (referee)
The bachelor thesis focuses on teaching the impacts of traffic in grammar schools. Specifically, it addresses one of the leading negative impacts, namely noise pollution, which is a worsening problem as the volume of traffic continues to grow. The aim of the thesis is to create and implement a lesson on this topic using an inquiry-based teaching approach. Pupils will learn how to measure approximate noise levels, understand its impacts, and devise a plan to improve the situation. The lesson will be pilot tested by pupils from the Secondary School of Surveying and the Geographical Grammar School in Prague. The theoretical part introduces the issue of noise pollution in more detail, describes inquiry-based teaching and its integration into lessons. The practical part provides teaching materials and a thorough methodology, that serves as a guide for teachers who would like to apply the lesson in their classes. Subsequently, the course of the lesson at the Geographical Grammar School is described, along with reflections from both the teacher's and students' perspectives. Based on assessment of the students' knowledge before and after the lesson, they appeared to have a better understanding of the issue. In the feedback, the pupils especially appreciated the fieldwork, the formation and testing of...
Evaluation of thematic maps of the participants of the Summer School of the Geography Olympiad in 2022 and 2023
Vondráčková, Lucie ; Jelen, Jakub (advisor) ; Kyncl, Günter (referee)
The aim of this work is to analyse the cartographic tasks of the Summer School of the Geography Olympiad 2022 and 2023. The first part deals with the theory required to master the given cartographic tasks - what the map must contain, what symbols are used on the maps and, last but not least, what are the methods of thematic cartography. In the practical part of the work, the maps created by the participants of these two years of the Summer School are evaluated on the basis of selected criteria. First, the individual maps will be evaluated verbally and with points, and then how they performed together. The aim of this part of the work will therefore be to summarize what things caused problems for the participants and what the organizers of the Summer School of the Geography Olympiad should focus on in terms of the cartographic preparation of the competitors.
Performance Analysis of IBM POWER8 Processors
Jelen, Jakub ; Kešner, Filip (referee) ; Jaroš, Jiří (advisor)
This paper describes the IBM Power8 system in comparison to the Intel Xeon processors, widely used in today’s solutions. The performance is not evaluated only on the whole system level but also on the level of threads, cores and a memory. Different metrics are demonstrated on typical optimized algorithms. The benchmarked Power8 processor provides extremely fast memory providing sustainable bandwidth up to 145 GB/s between main memory and processor, which Intel is unable to compete. Computation power is comparable (Matrix multiplication) or worse (N-body simulation, division, more complex algorithms) in comparison with current Intel Haswell-EP. The IBM Power8 is able to compete Intel processors these days and it will be interesting to observe the future generation of Power9 and its performance in comparison to current and future Intel processors.
Wherigo Client for webOS Platform
Jelen, Jakub ; Kubíček, Radek (referee) ; Kašpárek, Tomáš (advisor)
In my thesis I focus on the design of hybrid application for webOS platform and on study and understanding of structure of the Wherigo system from programmer's point of view. I deal with compatibility problems between webOS devices. Another issue is an insufficiency of documentation available for the Wherigo library. The result is fully functional and tested application for Wherigo that meets the requirements and is available in the webOS App Catalog.

The application is designed as a separate module which can be integrated into projects Moderní prostředky pro boj s kybernetickou kriminalitou na Internetu nové generace. Then are executed experiments with that tool to verify the functionality and utility of this tool.
