Sintra in the Twentieth Century European Narratives: Otherness and Identity
Garcia Pereira Oliveira, Cláudia ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Szobi, Pavel (referee) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
in English This thesis is based on an analysis of 20th century narratives about Sintra, Portugal. The narratives are present in travelogues, guidebooks, flyers, and postcards. Regarding travel literature, this study has confronted and compared 20th century foreign accounts about Sintra with national ones. The analysis includes both otherness and identity perspectives of the place, allowing the thesis to better understand the identity of the landscape of Sintra. The descriptions in travel literature or in visual sources about Sintra represent a specific mixture of cultural and natural elements - tangible and intangible heritage, and natural heritage. This combination results in the representation of Sintra's places of memory, and of its Cultural Landscape. The narratives in this research address various subthemes within larger themes of man, nature, and their mutual relation. The themes are translated into Sintra's cultural and natural heritage, merged with poetic discourses that create poetic narratives based on both cultural and natural elements. The themes thus enable the deconstruction of Sintra's Cultural Landscape and, once assembled into a single narrative, converge into a representation of the landscape, that is, an image of the place in the 20th century. Keywords: Sintra 20th century...
Kurdish Identity and The Revolutionary Left in Turkey From Eastern Question to Kurdish Question (1960-1990)
Hatapçı, Ali ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
This study is based on the relationship between the Kurds and the Left in Turkey between 1960s and 1990 in Turkey. The question of identity is discussed in terms of the continuities and ruptures in the discourse(s) of the Left in Turkey on the 'eastern question' and 'Kurdish (national) question' in this period. The main question of the research is how the Kurdish identity was constructed in the discourses of Yön, TKSP (Türkiye Kürdistanı Sosyalist Partisi - Turkish Kurdistan Socialist Party), and the PKK (Partiya Karkerên Kurdistanê - Kurdistan Workers' Party). Three sample publications/organizations representative of the leftist discourse in the period were selected to show the Left's treatment of the Kurdish question by using periodical publications, memoirs, clandestine organizational documents and through discourse analysis.
Paris in the French, Czech and American tourist guidebooks (1918-1939)
Rudová, Lenka ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Kubišová, Vlasta (referee) ; Verdier, Nicolas (referee) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
in English This Master's Thesis deals with guidebooks about Paris published in France, Czechoslovakia and the United States of America between the years 1918-1939. It analyses how the French capital city is presented in the guidebooks and how far the representation differs according to the country of publishing. The first two chapters deal with the modern history of tourism up until the interwar period and with the formation of major collections of guidebooks. The following chapters use a comparative perspective to analyse three major aspects of tourist guidebooks about Paris: itineraries; recommended places and monuments (the so-called "must- sees"); and global images of Paris. The analysis reveals that the country of publishing had only a limited impact on the content of the guidebooks; rather, the books largely respected established rules and patterns within the genre. Key words: tourism, guidebook, Paris, interwar period, representation, image of the city Résumé en français Ce mémoire de master analyse des guides touristiques de Paris publiés en France, en Tchécoslovaquie et aux États-Unis entre 1918 et 1939. Physical-spatial and social configuration at neighborhood level, the Raval (Barcelona), an urban evaluation according with the Compact City Model Edwin Javier Azofeifa Valverde ABSTRACT In urban areas, economic development and efforts for improving the quality of citizens' lives, instead of complementing each other and contributing to the advancement of the city, both of them generate and accentuate the processes of physical and social fragmentation in cities. This thesis describes and evaluates the physical-spatial and social configuration in the neighbourhood of Raval in Barcelona, with a particular focus on the role played in that configuration by the immigrant population. The aim is to identify how those processes in which social inequality and a lack of access to certain services and facilities manifest themselves. In order to illustrate this reality and understand the configuration of Raval, population data and information regarding services, facilities, and urban furniture were gathered. The concept of compact urban development (the compact city model) was used in order to interpret the potential weaknesses in the neighbourhood, which hinder its functionality. The main drawbacks are the predominance of population groups occupying certain spaces hindering their potential integration in the...
English as Lingua Franca in Cyprus after 2003: Questions of identity
Savoglu, Mustafa ; Ira, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee) ; Sherman, Tamah (referee)
As a multilingual and multicultural island, Cyprus has been segregated based on religion, identities, communities, and nationalities. In 1974, this segregation became a physical division of the island. After twenty-nine years of division, in 2003 April 23rd , the borders or in other words, the check-points were opened, and the two biggest communities of the island; Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, have been put in contact again. The phenomenon that the both communities were put in contact again also brought the question of language along with. This thesis investigates the evolution of the language policies and planning (LPP) in Cyprus. This research has found that since the beginning of the first crossings, English language has been functioning as Lingua franca, and being spread across the divide. The research analyzes the evolution of the LPP under three categories; A) Politics and Language Policies and Planning in Cyprus, B) Civil Society and Language Policies and Planning in Cyprus, C) Education and Language Policies and Planning in Cyprus. The results of the research have shown that the both sides (North and South) are willing to achieve a Greek and Turkish bilingual Cyprus, whereas the current situation points out that the lack policies and planning along with cooperation between the two...
Analysing contrasting representations of folklore in the Czech Republic through the lens of participatory movements of traditional music
Perrenoud, Zoé Mathilda ; Power, Martina (advisor) ; Kratochvíl, Matěj (referee) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
This paper combines theoretical questions with empirical research to bring to light the vitality of folk processes in the urban modern world. The fieldwork focuses on participatory forms of traditional music. With the help of the interviews I conducted, this paper seeks (to explain) the participants' motivations for their enactment of folklore. We analyse the musicians' motivations, as well as the functions their practice of folklore fulfils, while putting the emphasis on the living dynamic and transformative creative processes of tradition. We concentrate more on the functions and forms of their enactment of folklore rather than on the aesthetic material or folklore itself. What needs do participatory forms of folklore express, especially in our urban modern world? KEYWORDS: Folklore, ethnomusicology, anthropology of music, tradition, authenticity
Mátyásföld: suburban villa district in the agglomeration of Budapest (1887 - 1914)
Molnár, Gyöngy Krisztina ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
Thinking of the villa quarters of Budapest, Andrássy Road, Svábhegy or the Rózsadomd are the ones that first come to mind of many. These are the most well-known rows of villas of the capital, but in the green zone of the 16th district there is a less well-known but yet even more remarkable villa quarter: Mátyásföld. Mátyásföld was founded in 1887 in the outskirts of Cinkota, part of the eastern agglomeration of Budapest at the time. Every source has recorded the circumstances of its establishment as legendary. However, its founder was a good businessman rather than a character from a fairy tale. He recognised the change of lifestyles typical of the era, and sought business opportunities. It became fashionable at the time that anyone who could afford to do so, created a second, representative home in the green area outside the city, but still within the reach of the centre. In the outskirts of the city, more and more holiday homes and villa quarters were established, and Mátyásföld was created also for this purpose. The central issue of this dissertation is how Mátyásföld, founded in the agglomeration of the capital, was built and how it managed to fit into the urban development of Budapest, as well as the life of its inhabitants. Beyond its unique geographic and administrative situation, the role...

Region Building : the process of regionalization of defense and security cooperation in Visegrad and Western Balkan countries
Vanchoski, Aleksandar ; Janáč, Jiří (advisor) ; Czoch, Gábor (referee)
The process of region building and regionalization is an emerging phenomenon examined in the same time by historians, geographers, political scientists, economists diplomats and other scientific profiles. The concepts of region and regionalization could appear at different spatial scales, such as supra-state, sub-state or as a cross-border units and processes. Furthermore region and regionalization are complex for defining because they incorporate different narratives and categories as regional identity, spatial borders and delineating, cultural and social homogeneity, political and economic interdependence etc. Regions are invented, re-invented or constructed with purpose to reply to different functional, territorial and administrative purposes. In the era of ongoing globalization and deepening of the European integration, regions are becoming powerful tool for achieving different goals and interests. Nowadays regions, regional cooperation, regional identity are becoming a terms very often used in political and public discourses for different kind of mobilization. Western Balkan, similarly as Visegrad and Baltic regional formats is one of the emerging spatial formation that is appearing in the context of EU integration policies. In Macedonian political and public discourse these tendencies are...
