Czech functionalism and its greenery. The domestic garden of the 1920s and 1930s.

The subject of the thesis is the so far neglected topic of garden creation in connection with functionalist residential architecture. In terms of time, the author defined the period of the 1920s and 1930s of the last century, spatially the territory of Bohemia and Moravia. The term residential garden comes from the contemporary discourse, which understood the garden as an extended living space, with a special emphasis on its recreational use. In terms of type, the work will focus on the villa garden and will follow how the development of the functionalist house was incorporated into the theory and practice of the landscape production of the interwar years. The description and interpretation of selected examples of the residential garden is preceded by a thorough analysis of the theoretical work of Otokar Fierlinger and Ladislav Žák - two prominent promoters of the new landscape style, which was to become the equivalent of architectural functionalism. The diploma thesis looks not only for the existence of such a garden, but also for the wider significance of nature for architecture itself.

Visions and Building of the Socialist Cities during the Stalin Era (Prague 1948-1956)

The dissertation thesis focuses on the contemporary concept of the socialist city in the context of Czechoslovak Stalinism. Using Prague as an example, it examines how this concept was defined in the historical city environment. The aim of the thesis is to reconstruct the process of socialist modernization of Prague in the 1950s, to identify the basic features of the socialist city, to analyze its ideological foundations and to contribute to the discussion on the nature of Czechoslovak Stalinism. The thesis is divided into five main thematic sections. The first conceptualizes the notions of utopia, Stalinism and space. On their basis, it interprets the socialist city as a distinctive vision of modernization. The second section reconstructs the political and symbolic significance of the transformation of space (landscape, cities) within Stalinist modernity. Based on contemporary texts and urban plans, the third section analyses the planning and construction of Prague in the 1950s. It defines the chronology of events, the typology of the implemented projects and the main actor groups that participated in this transformation (politicians, architects, preservationists, journalists, citizens). Baba housing estate - history and present Eliška Varyšová Abstract (english version) Abstract The work Baba housing estate - history and present deals with a phenomenon of functionalist exhibition colony in Prague district Dejvice. The history and European context were compiled in two monography publications, in that reason autor tries to research an afterwar progression and especially a present state of individual houses from the view of monument preservation. The work is divided to three parts. The first part focuses on European context and formation of housing estate, the circumstances of construction and results. The second chapter describes destinies of houses and place from 1948 to the present and issue of the preservation of the colony. The third part is a catalog of 10 houses that represent different approach to maintenance and preservation of housing estate. In the conclusion autor summarizes knowledge and tries to answer the question how to preserve a historic identity of place and an autenticity of houses and colony.

Reflection of Louis I. Kahn in Czech architecture.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to map the image and architectural motifs of the American architect Louis Kahn in Czechoslovak and Czech architecture from 1958 to the present. It traces the complex reception of his image in the contemporary Czechoslovak press and justifies the late reactions. Thesis explores the reception of his motifs and thoughts by selected architects whose works shows an admiration for his work.

Interpretations of Solomon's Temple presented on example of Spanish El Escorial

The Temple of Solomon is one of the interests of a large number of scholars in many fields. Since ancient times, it is possible to find theoretical writings telling about what the biblical monument looked like. In the Middle Ages, many efforts were made to reconstruct this biblical monument. Just like the Middle Ages in the Middle Ages, they were more concerned with the spiritual meaning that the temple carried, and since the Renaissance they have also devoted themselves to the technical side of the building. This work describes several already existing and known reconstructions of the First Temple. Probably one of the most important buildings is the residence of Spanish king Philip II of Spain - El Escorial, which was built during the second half of the 16th century. In connection with the construction, an extensive study was created by Juan Bautista Villalpando, which was funded by the king himself. The work of a Spanish priest encouraged a new wave of interest in Solomon's legacy. Villalpando's research was used by Philip II. to build the new Spanish king's residence El Escorial. Interwar architecture of Jan Gillar's tenement houses

The bachelor thesis deals with the architecture of tenement houses of one of the most significant representatives and authors of Czech science - based functionalism - Jan Gillar. The tenement houses were built in the 1930s in Prague, in a time and space in which a great building boom of this type of housing in the intentions of functionalist architecture can be recorded. Gillar's tenement houses are presented in detail, with particular emphasis on the internal creation of space, architectural rendering, technical aspects, and the circumstances of origin. This thesis intends to trace a value of Gillar's tenement houses in the context of the significant building industry production in Prague and at the same time to place them in the context of Gillar's architectural work. Garden cities in the northwest of Prague in the 1920s

Bachelor thesis "Garden towns in the northwest of Prague in the 1920s" deals with the urban phenomenon of garden towns within the construction of the northwestern sector of Great Prague. The aim is to map the situation of selected garden towns in comparison with the original conception of Ebenzer Howard and some foreign realizations that, whether successfully or not have transformed this utopian conception into reality. It is also important to mention the overall urban situation of Prague after the creation of a regulatory plan in the 1920s. The work deals in detail with specific realizations of residential areas in today's city district of Prague 6 - Ořechovka, Hanspaulka and Vokovice. Emphasis is placed on the comparison of the ideal garden city with the realization of the so-called "garden suburbs" of Great Prague and outlining the main differences between them. The Architecture of Bohumil Böhm in Český Krumlov

The bachelor thesis deals with the architecture of Bohumil Böhm in his hometown Český Krumlov. His three realizations in Český Krumlov - the "Družba" cinema (1968-1976), the "Plešivec II" housing estate (1970-1980) and the former local headquarters of the Communist Party (1976- 1979) are presented in the context of the Czechoslovak post-war architecture and the author's work. However, above all they are set in the urban and architectural context of the town, of which the situation is very specific due to its rich historical heritage. The key topic of the work is Böhm's architectural contribution to the town, but it also touches on several other themes - the specifics of the work of the regional architect in centralized engineering structure, interest in the relation between architecture and artworks or preservation of the architecture built during the normalization period. Sacral Space in the Work of Jan Sokol.

The bachelor thesis is dedicated to Jan Sokol's designs of Catholic churches created from the 1920s to 1960s for architectural competitions or specific commissions. Although they were never realized, mostly for political reasons, they are important examples of the use of modern technologies and the attempt to define a new monumental style. Jan Sokol's designs, along with his theoretical texts, are placed in the context of the work and focus of other Czechoslovak architects who were active in the interwar and post-war periods.
