Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of: Department of Pharmaceutical Technology Consultant: Doc. PharmDr. Zdeňka Šklubalová, PhD. Student: Mgr. Eliška Nesvadbová Title of Thesis: Eye drop dosing - dropper tip characterization Five original commercial eye drops with various dosing systems were investigated in this thesis. Density, viscosity, surface tension, and osmolality of the preparations were measured. Influence of an effective diameter of the dropper tip, the dispensing angle and surface tension on the drop weight was studied. The drop weight was directly proportional to the effective diameter of the dropper tip, surface tension of the solution and the dispensing angle. The influence of dispensing angle on the drop weight was also dependent on wetting of the dropper tip. Harkins-Brown factor (FHB) was determined for each out of the dropper tips studied. Harkins-Brown factors ranged from 0.63 to 0.70 with the exception of the dropper tip K3 with FHB 0.56. Many failures in regular drop formation were observed using this dropper tip.
