Outsiders in the Works of Tennessee Williams and Sam Shepard

This thesis analyzes characters - outsiders that appear in the plays The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire written by Tennessee Williams and True West and Fool for Love by Sam Shepard. These outsiders are always singled out from somewhere and they have difficulties to fit in a relationship, society or the physical environment in which they are found. They have been outsiders their entire lives, thus the past is as important as the present. These characters were classified as outsiders because they cannot or do not want to fit in a majority, belong to one specific place and adjust to environment. Consequently, they often use various means to fight against the reality that they are not part of instead of accepting it. In the introduction of the thesis I explain that even though there is a gap of several decades between the works of both authors and their style of writing is considerably different, we can still find the similar characters that are lost in reality. In this section of the thesis I also discuss the fact that the way authors describe the characters can be related to their own lives and experiences that formed them.
