The rural and the urban: mapping the dynamics
Sládek, Jan ; Duffková, Jana (referee) ; Illner, Michal (advisor)
The thesis deals with the problematic of socio-cultural differences between the rural and urban dwellers. According to sociological tradition, three approaches are presented: (1) the idea of dichotomy, i.e. the existence of substantial difference between the rural and the urban; (2) the concept of rural-urban continuum and (3) the idea of convergence, i.e. the disappearance of above mentioned differences. These approaches have been confronted with historical and regional context of the Czech Republic and also with the results of a questionnaire survey "Actor 2005" that are representative for the population of the Czech Republic. Having do ne this, the author concludes that the Czech Republic has reached the point typical for advanced capitalist countries where the socio-cultural differences between the rural and urban have been gradually disappearing.
