Women of important composers, involved in music
Chvalová, Viola ; Palkovská, Jana (advisor) ; Tichá, Libuše (referee)
In this thesis, I summarize the personal and professional profiles of a selection of musically active women who lived alongside prominent composers. These are six women artists from the Baroque to the 20th century. In each chapter, a different element of their lives became the focus of my interest. Sometimes, given the paucity of reliable sources of information (especially in relation to the Baroque period), this is merely a summary of hypotheses, sometimes I focus more on the professional side of the personality, and sometimes on personal and family matters. The thesis deals with sections of music history with which the general public is not so familiar and yet which I suppose deserve to be known. I focus on the virtuoso of the seventeenth-century harpsichordist Marie-Rose Dubois, who, alongside her husband J. B. Forqueray, was a concert artist, the singer and important creator of the Bach manuscripts Anna Magdalena Bachová, the outstanding singer of the classical period Josefina Dušková, the wife of the Czech composer F. X. Dušek. I also deal with the harpist and composer Sophie Corri-Dussek, wife of the musical bohemian J. L. Dusik, the most important 19th century pianist Clara Schumann and the opera singer Berta Lauterer, partner of the Czech composer J. B. Foerster. There are, of course, many...
Spectral analysis of historical pianos
Pokorný, Marek ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the spectral analysis of historical pianos in aim to identify and compare their acoustic and spectral characteristics. Three examples of pianos were analysed, including a significant piano owned by the composer Leoš Janáček. The analysis was performed on measured piano samples using Fourier transformation in MATLAB, with an emphasis on spectral parameters such as spectral centroid, flatness, skewness, sharpness and roughness, and on the visual representation of a spectrum over time -- the spectrogram. The results of the spectral analysis were used to interpret and evaluate differences in timbre of the pianos and their probable causes. The theoretical part of the thesis provides a brief overview of the history and design of the piano, explains the spectral descriptors used, and examines the properties of musical tones and the influence of psychoacoustics on the perception of pitch and timbre.
Analysis of Time-Varying Spectrum of Pianos
Smělý, Pavel ; Rajmic, Pavel (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This work focuses on an analysis of a time-varying spectrum of pianos. The beginning of the work deals with the gradual evolution of the piano, aiming at timbre and design, and it analyzes in detail its individual parts and their influence on the sound spectrum. The theoretical part also concentrates on the issue of harmonic analysis in both the musical conception of timber and the usage of mathematical signal processing methods that make this analysis possible. Another part deals with practical tasks of the work such as a description of an application and functions created in the interface of MATLAB for exploring the time-varying spectrum of tones, description of the method and procedure of the measuring of three concert grand pianos. The work also analyzes, by supporting it with practical examples and by comparing the measured pianos, the most important acoustic phenomena that originate from the production of tones in the instrument; it describes the timber of individual instruments, and it gives recommendations.
Analysis and comparison of spectra in different piano models
Peloušek, Tomáš ; Přikryl, Lubor (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This work focuses on the topic of analysis of the time varying spektrum of the piano. The introduction deals with the historical development of the piano, of its individual parts and the way they influence the tone colour. The subsequent theoretical part is focused mainly on the topic of spectral analysis in the musical concept of sound colours. In the following part a measuring of particular musical instruments is described, these experiments being conducted in an anechoic chamber provided by the instrument producer. It also lists the various methods and calculations used in the process and the conclusion presents analysis of acquired samples.
Analysis of Influence of Hardness and Alteration of Piano Hammer on Strength and Spectrum of Signal
Mikulášková, Aneta ; Musil, Jaroslav (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
The bachelor’s thesis deals with the analysis of the time-varying spectrum of sound of the piano series 125 and M 110 by PETROF and the influence of intonation on this spectrum. It analyzes the higher harmonic components in relation to the force applied to strings and the use of variously tuned hammers. Bachelor’s thesis observes the effect of the dynamics of keystroke and intonation on the pitch of the tone in its time and frequency plane and tone’s energy loss in relation with the dynamics. Further, the thesis describes the way of measuring and recording the captured tone samples and their subsequent processing and analysis in the application created in MATLAB development environment.
Klement Slavický and his piano music for children
Honzová, Miroslava ; Tichá, Libuše (advisor) ; Palkovská, Jana (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with instructive solo piano pieces by Klement Slavický. In the first chapter, a brief biography of the composer is presented. The second chapter is concerned with his piano cycles for children which includes the following cycles: On the Whites and Blacks, Piano and Youth, 12 Small Studies, At Home with the Piano, and Amoroso. The third chapter contains pedagogical and interpretative approach to the selected pieces from the aforementioned cycles. In this chapter, chosen practise procedure of the selected pieces, ways of dealing with the performance and technical issues as well as insights of the individual pupils are also presented. The fourth chapter contains the results of my questionnaire survey, the purpose of which was to find out the frequency of teachers' incorporation of Slavický's pieces into the pupils' repertoire, the compositions performed the most frequently, the ways pupils cope with his music as well as the teachers' own view of Slavický's personality and his music. The third and the fourth chapter also include some generally applicable didactic principles as well as author's personal observations that she considered important to mention. The aim of the thesis is to delve deeper into Klement Slavický's work for solo piano intended for children primarily...
Sonatas by Johann Kuhnau and their Use during Piano Lessons
Mahelová, Monika ; Palkovská, Jana (advisor) ; Kozánková, Olga (referee)
This thesis deals with the life and work of Johann Kuhnau and focuses mainly on the following categories: 1. The life and work of Johann Kuhnau 2. The work for keyboard musical instruments 3. Sonatas by Johann Kuhnau 4. The use of his sonatas during piano lessons This thesis deals with a biography of Johann Kuhnau and presents his works for keyboard instruments. This is followed by a short chapter about a sonata form, its definition and progression. The third chapter is focuses on the sonatas by Johann Kuhnau, especially on his fourth collection named Biblical Sonatas which are presented here in the context of stories from the Old Testament. The final chapter focuses on the didactic and interpretive knowledge of Kuhnau's sonatas from his third and fourth collections for keyboard instruments. The aim of the work is to introduce Johann Kuhnau to reader, to point out his contribution in the field of music and to present the possibilities of working with his collections for keyboard instruments in teaching the piano at today's art schools. KEYWORDS Johann Kuhnau, baroque, keyboard musical instruments, harpsichord, piano, sonata, programme music, Bible, Old Testament, music schools, interpretation
