Pain of shapeshifting
Daniš, Vojtěch ; Lastomirský, Ján (referee) ; Mikyta, Svätopluk (advisor)
The bachelor's thesis entitled Pain of Shapeshifting follows on from the author's previous works, in which he dealt with topics such as nostalgia, communication with inanimate objects, the relationship between the living and the inanimate, past experience and change as mental and physical development (transformation). Now he combines these elements with new ones, with an interest in a kind of transition or "portal" between the waking and dream worlds. Interpretation of dreams, dream symbols, as well as pop culture references from fairy tales or mythological stories serve as a guide for the author. He compares the motifs of these stories with human characteristics and the development of their nature. He works with motifs where the protagonist goes through a transformation, whether it's going through a "portal" or interacting with a magical object. Alice in Wonderland passes through a "portal" in the form of a rabbit hole, in The Wizard of Oz this transmission is caused by a tornado, in Sleeping Beauty by a thorn, in Snow White by an apple, and so on.

Good and evil in Plotinus: From the One to matter
Janota, Sebastian ; Chlup, Radek (advisor) ; Němec, Václav (referee)
This thesis focuses on polar qualities of Good and Evil in the work of the Neo-Platonic philosopher Plotinus. Plotinus' metaphysics tries to integrate these contrary principals into a monistic system. The first part of the thesis deals with Plotinus' metaphysics in general. The central term is One - the primal principal and the source of the whole reality - which Plotinus argues for as the only real Good. Another basic term in his work is tolma - the will to separate - being the cause of plurality and providing the other with existence. New kinds of realities arise through tolma and each kind has its own specifics. The Plotinus' hierarchical scale, One - Intellect - Soul, descends to the lowest level of reality - Matter. Matter closes the whole cosmological process. Plotinus characterises Matter as the only real Evil and the originator of all evil. Nevertheless, this weakens his monistic concept. The second part of this thesis, therefore, focuses on Matter. The question is how the infinitely good One may give rise to its own opposite. Thus, this work primarily aims at difficulties connected with this dualism evoking concept and it also introduces various, sometimes highly different ways of interpretation of Plotinus' metaphysics.

MRZENOVÁ, Petra

The first part is a general introduction to child heroes´ experience, their notion of Good and Evil and their attitude to given rules, conventions and circumstances. The practical part deals with particular interpretations of the issue, the theme of the so called other world and the concept of authority not only as a moral example but also as a tool of power and manipulation. The thesis is based on the analysis of particular stories by British authors (C.S. Lewis, P. Pullman, and J.K. Rowling), in which different points of view are shown. The summary brings final conclusions about what the stories have in common.
