Diploma thesis Closely Watched Trains: from the short story Kain to the short story, from short story to Oscar film and theatrical adaptations maps the path of Bohumil Hrabal's existential short story Kain, through the short story Closely Watched Trains, an Oscar film of the same name to theatrical adaptations that were dramatized by different people. The work also includes media response and comparison of the similarity of books, films and productions. The first part deals with the theoretical definition of literary genres, namely short stories and short stories. Review and criticism from the journalistic genres are theoretically described. The film and theater adaptation is defined and the dramatic structure of the film work is described. The second part presents the life and work of the writer Bohumil Hrabal and examines in more detail his distinctive writing style. The next sections are always devoted to the specific medium that the text carries. First, the text of the existential short story Kain is analyzed, followed by the short story Closely Watched Trains, including media coverage in the periodical press, followed by the Oscar-winning film Closely Watched Trains, which includes a biography of director Jiří Menzel and a chapter devoted to the Oscars. DIRECTING ONE’S OWN PLAY, ADAPTATION OR TRANSLATION AS WELL AS REGULAR DRAMATIC TEXT

Tomáš Loužný’s Bachelor Thesis follows foundations of his directing work both inside and outside of the realm of school projects. Meanwhile,two basic approaches to the text are being analyzed. First approach could be called interpretational and the second one authorial. The latter includes adaptations of a theatre plays as well as novels. In the first part the key concepts upon which the thesis is built are introduced. Second part comprises of a closer analysis of three productions: Její pastorkyňe (Her Stepdaughter), school production from rural realism, bachelor production of the theatre play Nevinní jsou nevinní (Innocent Are Innocent) and direction of the adaptation of the novel The Confusions of Young Törless, renamed to Synáčci (Mummy’s Boys). Preparatory phase is emhasized. The author mentions rehearsal process itself as well, with the intention to analyze the influence it had on his future approach to directing. He concludes with the question that implicitly appears in all of the chapters: What is actually the difference between adaptation and dramatization?
To adapt a classical text in an alternative way

This thesis goes back to the classical French theater text, the theater perceived as alternative in Europe, and my attempt to propose an alternative theater using a classic French text translated into Czech. He describes how all these terms echo in me. He returns to history and recalls that before being paper, the text was body, and that before the alternative there is convention (and tradition). Above all, it is written to untangle the ideas and move them forwrad, to move me forward.
Productions of Franz Kafka's work in directorial generation at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s in the wider context of alternative culture

Master's thesis deals with the reception of Franz Kafka's personality and works by generations of directors at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. The main question discussed is what Kafka's work meant for these directors, which subject it represented for them, and how their theatrical adaptations reflected the socio-political conditions of the socialist Czechoslovakia in the period of normalization. The first chapter reflects the social and cultural context of the period while focusing on the position of the theater and movement of the small scenes which belonged to the current alternative culture. The second chapter focuses on Franz Kafka's reception by 1989 and also contains a literary interpretation of his work, on which is based the main part of the thesis. There are the analyses of the productions of America (1985, J. A. Pitínský), The Trial (1989, Arnošt Goldflam), The Metamorphosis (1988, Petr Lébl) and Josephine the Singer, or the Mouse Folk (1989, Petr Lébl). On grounds of these analyses, we can argue that Kafka’s work served to the explored generation as an expression of the existential feeling of an individual in totalitarian society. The last chapter deals with The Wish to Become an Indian (1991, J.A. Pitínský), which was created after the revolution, and shows how Franz Kafka's theatrical interpretations changed at the end of totalitarianism.
From interpretation to adaptation

The dramatic structure is like the skeleton that holds together the components and gives birth to the orchestration of the performance.This structure is essential to give the performance life.As a director in theatre it is our main tool. In defining the performance we define the dramaturgy. But what does the dramaturgy consist of and how do we get a hold of a tool, which is so driven by our intuition and how do we change it during the process? In this thesis work I will focus on how to use the dramatic principles in different works from interpretation to adaptation. I will explore how these principles function in each process and how they support the dramaturgy towards the creation of the performance.
ADAPTATION OF NONDRAMATIC THEME AND DEVISED DRAMATURGY

This master?s thesis deals with the difference between interpretative and devised dramaturgy. It defines the term script and describes possible methods of creating a script; the authoress mentions examples from her own experience and from history and presents of the Czech professional and amateur theater. In the second part of the text the authoress analyses inscenations Deník 1959-1974 and Golem, Štvanice, stemming from nondramatic theme; the authoress cooperates on these inscenations as script author and dramaturgist. She describes her own procedures while working on the adaptation of diarial and novelistic draft and explains the role of dramaturgist on two strongly different inscenations.

The topic of this bachelor thesis covers the staging of "...And from now on, the Canterville will be peaceful" with company Překvapený štrúdl at Art Academy in Chlumec nad Cidlinou. The author first writes about her interest in children?s theatre, its characteristics and its connections. Then describes Literary-drama class and Art Academy in Chlumec nad Cidlinou, company Překvapený štrúdl, where she contemplates over her students and difficulties, which she have had to deal with. Then she concentrates on Oscar Wilde?s novel Canterville ghost and its author. The most important and largest part of this thesis focuses on process from literary work to the stage form. Special attention is given to the dramaturgy, directing, set design and music.
Serious musicals on West End stages

The topic of this thesis covers the serious musicals staged in London's West End. The author first considers the concept of "serious musical", its characteristics and its connections with melodrama. Then the author contemplates over several musicals which deal with serious topics which the author had seen in London (for example: The Lion King or Wicked). Then focus moved to three musicals - Matilda the Musical, Billy Elliot the Musical and Les Misérables. The author focuses more attention on the first two musicals that are mentioned. They are representatives of serious family musicals. This thesis is devoted to how they were originally intended (book, movie) and then their stage appearance is analyzed in detail with emphasis on transformations which have occured during the adaptations. The author then focuses on topics which are directly connected to Matilda the Musical, Billy Elliot the Musical and Les Misérables. Thus the thesis is concentrated on some adaptations, musical stage design, dance, children actors, megamusicals and family musicals. In this thesis, the author also tries to identify the possible reasons for the changes and where they originated from.
H. Ch. Andersen's Fairy tales Dramatized for the Czech Theatre Groups

The essay is devoted to study of the Hans Christian Andersen?s fairy tales that were dramatized for presentation by Czech children theatre groups. It`s first part deals with the analysis of Andersen's fairy tale literary output, with regard to his narrative style and his contribution to the genre of fairy tale. Second part of the work analyzes the Swineherd story in terms of qualities, which it offers to children?s theater, and compares it with other stories dramatized for the same purpose. The final part discusses six dramatizations of Swineherd, which were staged with children groups, especially in terms of how to convert a literary narrator in theatrical form, and the influence of the nature of such conversion on the structure of the production and its characters. In respect to each of the scripts, the essay studies the extent to which their authors managed to preserve the genre and style of the original and what influence any shifts had on the transmission of the Swineherd `s message.
THE PRINCIPLES OF ALTERNATIVE THEATRE IN THE CONTEMPORARY PRAXIS OF PROFESSIONAL PUPPET THEATRES IN EUROPE OUTSIDE OF EU

This thesis conserns the process of preparation of the performance ?The Jungle Book?, based on the original contemporary adaptation of the stories by Rudiard Kipling for childrens' puppet theatre. The curiosity of this process relies on specific conditions in the post-yugoslav Balkan countries, more precisely in Zagreb, Croatia, where the performance will be presented at the beginning of 2013. In order to realise the project at the institutional theatre, it was neccesary to apply for an international grant that supports cooperation projects with Balkan countries. The questions of tolerance of differencies and inclusion of the underrepresented social groups have become the key topics of the project. On the basis of personal experience with specific prejudices of the Balkan folks I've worked out the directing concept for the puppet theatre performance with the elements of contemporary circus. In the atractive manner it introduces the healthy social values to children 5 - 11 years old. This thesis presents the reaction to the situation in the contemporary puppetry in the Balkans, explains the process of creative decision making and reflects the struggle for the financial support for the project.
