Arcimboldo's continents - iconography of the celebration of the Habsburg dynasty
Velebná, Lucie ; Nespěšná Hamsíková, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Dobalová, Sylva (referee)
In 1571, Arcimboldo organized a festive procession for the wedding of Maria of Bavaria and Charles of Styria, in which representatives of the four continents as well as personifications of the seasons and the elements came forward to establish the Habsburgs as their rulers. Within this context, the question arises to what extent the theme of empire ruled by the Habsburgs across continents is also related to Arcimboldo's paintings of composite heads of the seasons and elements. The thesis thus maps the vast field of visual culture of Habsburg representation, in which the theme of global empire resonates, and which includes various festivals as well as imperial kunstkammer and menagerie. An important role was played by representatives of exotic flora and fauna, which were representative symbols of the territories the Habsburg ruled and which, in the second half of the 16th century, became associated with the personification of the continents as their characteristic attributes. The thesis concludes that this visual language is also continued by Arcimboldo in his allegories, in which he elevates the Habsburgs to rulers of the whole world.
Population trends of wetland birds in Europe
Karasová, Lucia ; Hořák, David (advisor) ; Musil, Petr (referee)
Waterbird research has grown in importance over the decades, attracting both professional and public interest due to its fascinating nature. Historical records of waterbird abundance have allowed the analysis of population trends and the identification of potential aberrations. Europe is an important region for many breeding and wintering species, providing a wide range of suitable habitats throughout the year. Several wildfowl and diver species, but also common waders, wading birds or cormorants exhibited a long-term stable or increasing population trends. The most decreasing trends were reported for some diving ducks, grebes and grassland-nesting waders. Despite reports of apparent declines in waterbird populations, the identification of ecological causes is complex due to the diverse characteristics of different waterbird species, making this a broad and complex topic to investigate. From the mentioned ecological drivers, habitat loss has the most negative impact on waders, whilst climate change could be associated with the shifting of breeding and wintering ranges. The birds breeding on wet grasslands were mostly affected by modern agriculture, and nowadays, their populations are threatened. Tidally induced deformation of icy moons
Pleiner Sládková, Kateřina ; Souček, Ondřej (advisor) ; Rhoden, Alyssa (referee) ; Tosi, Nicola (referee)
Within this Ph.D. project, we have developed and validated a modeling methodol- ogy for the evaluation of the influence of friction in regional and global models of tidal deformation in icy bodies. We focus on the role of friction in two specific scenarios: (i) strike-slip faults within Europa's ice shell (expanding the model by Kalousová et al. (2016)), and (ii) the frictional behavior of fault system known as 'tiger stripes' at the south pole of Enceladus, building upon the 3D model of Enceladus' ice shell developed by Souček et al. (2019). Ad (i), we have developed a mathematical model predicting slip at the strike-slip fault, its neighboring bulk's deformation, and the region's thermal evolution driven by two dissipative processes. First, our investigation focuses on the mechanism of meltwa- ter generation, where results indicate a limited potential for generating near-subsurface meltwater and its confinement to the fault region. Second, we confirmed the physical validity of the 'tidal walking' concept, a theoretical model for generating lateral offsets on Europa's strike-slip faults. We show that fault penetration across the entire shell or reaching a sufficiently low-viscosity zone is necessary for producing observable offset, which is unlikely under current europan conditions. Also, our model's...
Architecture of organic farms in Czech republic
Pohanková, Lucie ; Kyselka, Mojmír (referee) ; Dýr, Petr (referee) ; Doc.Ing.arch.Jarmila Húsenicová,Ph.D. (referee) ; Urbášková, Hana (advisor)
New agricultural constructions in Czech Republic happen, in better case, privilege of civil engineer, in the worse case only privilege of the investor, in the past. While architects or enlightenment project architects with inventive and feeling for architecture, rarely interfered to their projection. In the practice, the preferred and implemented misconception, that it is a purely purpose-built buildings with economical advantageous solution type, when external design of the building and his effect in landscape plays just a minor role, meant a huge mistake, which disfeature face of a lot of villages. With the gradual development of organic and sustainable agriculture is obvious, that to the design of these buildings gets back the idea of invention and emotion of construction into the landscape. Essence of a dissertation is how to proceed with the draft of a new or completion of original organic farm in conditions of the Czech Republic and on which specific points to focus in the design. Objective of thesis is generalization of rules design new modern organic farm or new buildings on the existing organic farm, using the principles of organic architecture and architecture undemanding of energy, renewable source of energy and non-waste management and verification on the specific examples in the Czech Republic and neighboring Europa countries. Where else should apply the principles of organic architecture more than in the construction of organic farms. Moreover, organic farm offers a great number of functions and with related different operations with requirements for specific areas. This is an added bonus, diversity of construction and the possibility of building creativity in architectural solutions. It is then mainly limited functionality of the building, legislative, public health, fire and traffic regulations, with which any proposal must cope. Organic farms are a phenomenon, but also the future of sustainable agriculture in the Czech Republic, as well. Not only production side of organic farms, but also neglected building stock deserves the attention of experts. Only organic farm with the right comprehensive created building and energy concept on an ecological principle is becoming a well-functioning self-contained unit connected with the cycle of nature, the surrounding landscape and regional tradition.

The main objective of master’s thesis is to analyze the European market as a potential market for the expansion of Hamacas RGV. This Colombian company is focused on production of hand-made traditional high-quality products for example hammocks. In the first part are introduced basic theoretical concepts and marketing analyses which are crucial when planning the expansion strategy. Second part starts with the company’s overall overview and continues with analyses of conditions of external and internal European environment as a potential market for Hamacas RGV expansion in the future. The conclusion is made at the end with the recommendations which are built on examined analyses.
Discourse analysis of Tariq Ramadan
Jurčová, Lívia ; Ťupek, Pavel (advisor) ; Ženka, Josef (referee)
The thesis explores Ṭariq Ramaḍan, a significant Muslim intellectual primarily active in Europe, where he has long been engaged in the issues of Islam in European context. His erudition, charisma, and earned reputation as a mediator between Islam and secularism have brought him great social and academic influence but have also allowed him to actively participate within the sphere of European politics. However, on a global scale, Ramaḍan is a controversial figure, with his critics pointing out that he presents rather inconsistent opinions and adjusts his discourse based on his current audience whereby trying to appeal to both Muslims and non-Muslims, which raises doubts about his true beliefs and intentions. Through content analysis of his official website, the student has examined and compared Ramaḍan's statements in Arabic and English, representing his discourse towards both Muslim and non- Muslim audiences. The focus was laid on the most controversial topics, namely stoning and the role of women in society. The analysis has revealed that Ramaḍan's statements in Arabic and English are indeed inconsistent. In the conclusion, the student proposes possible reasons and intentions for Ramaḍan's choice of inconsistent discourse, drawing from knowledge about Ramaḍan's background but also the...
Motional electromagnetic induction in the subsurface ocean in Europa
Kureš, Ondřej ; Velímský, Jakub (advisor) ; Souček, Ondřej (referee)
Europa is one of the Jovian icy moons with confirmed subsurface ocean. Circulation of the ocean in presence of the Jovian ambient magnetic field leads to generation of the ocean-induced magnetic field (OIMF). On Earth, the OIMF has potential to provide us with informations about water flow and electrical conductivity. However, the OIMF in Europa has been addressed only briefly in the available literature. This thesis is focused on numerical modelling of motionally driven process of the electromagnetic induction (EMI) in the subsurface ocean of Europa. Firstly, the EMI equation is introduced with its corresponding weak formulation. Its solutions are obtained by the means of finite element method (FEM) in combination with spherical harmonic functions. I discuss the structure of the linear problem and subroutines applied in the numerical solver. The code is successfully tested against a set of independent semi-analytical solutions. Three models of flow in the Europa's ocean are explored, using simple analytical expressions of ocean velocities and Jovian magnetic field. 1
Das "deutsche Prag" 1939-1945. Ein Beitrag zur Erforschung der besetzten Hauptstädte Europas
Lohmann, Nina ; Křen, Jan (advisor) ; Puttkamer, Joachim (referee) ; Schmiechen-Ackermann, Detlef (referee)
anglicky The PhD thesis Das "deutsche Prag" 1939-1945. Ein Beitrag zur Erforschung der besetzten Hauptstädte Europas deals with the German occupation of Prague before and during World War II in the context of current research on the National-socialist occupation of Europe. The so-called Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia has been somewhat on the sidelines of current trends in international historiography as has the history of Prague in the Twentieth century. The thesis therefore first sketches out the broader research context as well as the roots for German occupation policy in the former Czechoslovak capital city, referring to the once prominent position of the German minority in Prague. One main focus of the thesis is then to try and analyse the (changing) structure and the population movement of the Germans in Prague during the years of occupation. In a next step, examples are given on how the German occupation regime tried to consolidate and expand the Germans' position in the city, aiming for an eventual re-modeling of the urban structure in terms of a "Germanisation" of the Bohemian capital. A chapter on the final collapse and dissolution of "German Prague" concludes the study.
Social Inequalities in Colorectal Cancer Screening (Non-)Attendance in Europe
Vančíková, Sabína ; Kulhánová, Ivana (advisor) ; Ngo, Ondřej (referee)
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide, responsible for nearly a million deaths yearly. Due to its slow progression, there is a unique window of opportunity to detect (and remove) the precancerous lesions or early stages of tumors and reduce CRC incidence and mortality. Regularly repeated fecal occult blood tests for 50-74 years old individuals and a follow-up colonoscopy in case of a positive result is a recommended screening strategy in the European Union. However, each country plans its own CRC screening program, population-based or opportunistic, and the attendance rates vary across Europe. This diploma thesis aimed to characterize the main sociodemographic barriers to CRC screening attendance in Europe, utilizing comparable data from an international cross-sectional health survey EHIS wave 3. To understand the background, lifelong CRC screening non-attendance rates were calculated for each country. Social inequalities were studied on both levels - in the population of the entire Europe and the individual countries. Various socioeconomic and lifestyle factors were used in the analyses as potential predictors of CRC screening attendance behavior. Social inequalities in CRC screening non-attendance persist across Europe. The age- standardized...
