Development issues of Sub-Saharan Africa with the intention of Namibia
JOUDALOVÁ, Kateřina
The bachelor degree thesis called ?Development Issues of Sub-Saharan Africa with a Focus on Namibia? deals with basic terms of development cooperation and with international organizations relevant for the topic, e.g. the World Bank and the United Nations. The chapter on selected causes of failure and on the current situation discusses political regimes, civil wars, indebtedness, remission of debt and approaches of ?planners? , i.e. big international entities providing development aid, such as UNICEF or USAID, versus ?searchers?, represented by non-governmental non-for-profit organizations Karas Huisen Crafts and Namibia People in Need. The thesis had one objective divided into three partial questions. The first partial objective was identical with the research question: Is the living standard in Namibia improving thanks to the traditional approach to development cooperation on the side of ?planners? or is it rather thanks to the alternative approach of ?searchers?? The answer to the question has been as follows: The improvements of the living standard in Namibia occur rather thanks to the alternative approach of ?searchers?. The second partial objective attempted to identify the influence of developed countries and world´s financial and development organizations on the development of Namibia. The final effect of entities involved in the development cooperation has proved to be favorable. The last partial objective was to evaluate the overall situation. Also this objective has been met and the situation evaluated. The answer mentioned particularly problems Namibia needs to deal with, such as alcoholism and related risks, including sexual promiscuity, violence and unemployment. A major issue is also the relatively widespread AIDS. Development is a very extensive topic and this thesis may continue further with an analysis of other causes of failure and of the current situation. In practice, the thesis will be provided to selected non-governmental non-for-profit organizations in the Czech Republic. The answer to the research question might further clarify the issue of ?searchers? versus ?planners? to those organizations, specifically the real powers of such entities.

This diploma thesis focuses on HIV/AIDS problematics in Africa. Africa is a continent most affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Two thirds of all HIV positive individuals (25,8 milion)live in sub-Saharan Africa. Among others, spreading the HIV virus is also the result of some traditions and social and cultural custome. Uganda is country that has manager to stop the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The WHO{\crq}s estimations show that 10-12% of HIV positive individuals live in Uganda. Another problem faced by Uganda is a high perinatal and maternal death rate, whose decrease is one of the Uganda goverment{\crq}s priorities.

Nýdrle, Tomáš ; Ježek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Běláčková, Vendula (referee)
HIV/AIDS is a real threat for Sub-Saharan Countries. It increased adult mortality substantially. HIV/AIDS pandemic causes the death of the most productive part of affected population. Human capital passing on to future generations is limited. Low economic performance and income inequality induce higher HIV vulnerability. Contra wise HIV/AIDS has significant negative effect on the welfare of affected population. The sources of pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa are not only social and cultural. Health and nutrition situation play considerable role. Holistic approach based on education, fidelity, abstinence and improvement of economic situation and moderate condom use (as the last way of prevention) seems to be an effective way of pandemic elimination.
Sub-Saharan Africa: infectious diseases as barriers of development
Nováková, Gita ; Steinmetzová, Dana (advisor) ; Pavlík, Petr (referee)
The Sub-Saharan Africa region is a part of world with great growth potential. On the other hand it is a region which has always have to solve the same problems of its development - poverty, illiteracy, indebtness etc. Most serious causes of limited development of human capital are health conditions of african population. Even in comparison with other developing regions the prevalence of infectious diseases is pretty high. Infectious diseases effect african society in its demographic, social and economic profile. Their importance is caused not only by direct consequences and costs of their high prevalence. Long-term impact on social structure poses much more serious challenge for future development of the region. Initially, the work describes general development trends in the Sub-Saharan African region. The second part focuses on particular infectious diseases, their prevalence and impact on society. The last chapter is focused on situation in Ghana - health profile of its population and current reforms that show possible future development of health financing policy in african countries.

Nevěřilová, Naďa ; Stuchlíková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Němečková, Tereza (referee)
The objective of this bachelor thesis is to evaluate the Millenium Development Goals project -- its procedures and up to now effects. I would like to try to find out if it is truth that activities of UN within this project have no results, eventually I would try to identify a problem and suggest possible solutions. The evaluation of this project is reduced to two of the total number of eight goals and to the region of Sub-Saharan Africa. First part of this work describes a subject-matter and a purpose of this project. It is concerned with theme poverty and with a historical background of rise of problems with poverty in Sub-Saharan countries. Then there are described methods which UN uses for monitoring of reaching the defined goals. Ways of financing an assistance for developing countries are also described. Second part of the work is aimed at the first goal of the project which is: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. This part begins with adumbration of possible ways and methods of measuring and identifying poverty. Afterwards there is described and evaluated a state and a progress of fulfilling this goal. Perspectives of future progress are also adumbrated. Third part is concerned with the sixth goal of the evaluated project: combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. After an introduction to the issue, there is also considered a state and a progress of reaching the goal and a possible future progress is presented.

Relations between France and its (former) colonies in Sub-Saharan Africa
Jakabovičová, Lucia ; Kváča, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kochan, Jan (referee)
The paper aims to provide basic characteristics and describe specific features of relations between France and its colonized territories in Sub-Saharan Africa or sovereign states formed in their place. Various aspects of these relations are evaluated along with their development and transformations during three periods: the period of colonial dominion, transition towards the independence of colonies, and immediately following the declaration of independence. Together with particular forms of political, economic, and cultural cooperation, motivations of parties for maintaining this cooperation and actual benefits for individual parties are considered. The paper provides comprehensive overview of the problem implying that French political interests in Sub-Saharan Africa were not diminished by the loss of colonies; the assertion of these interests merely adopted less ostensible but equally effective forms.
