Roma school children in primary and primary practical schools - reasons for the differences in the education
STROPNICKÁ, Kristýna
This bachelor thesis concern the problems involved in educating Roma children. Specifically, the goal of this study is to point out the effect that social order of the Roma family has on the quality and equal opportunities in the education their children receive in the town of Vimperk. The theoretical part of this paper will explore the development of the social and cultural life of the Roma minority and their subsequent social order in the Czech Republic. For my theoretical position, I have chosen the work of Pavel Barša, whose theory concludes that there are three major reasons responsible for Roma exclusion: socioeconomic, cultural and political. I will attempt to describe the social and economic situation of Roma families generally and analyse the social consequences economic, cultural and political exclusion has on the Roma minority nationally and, on the Vimperk society. Additionally, I will attempt to describe the Roma community´s traditional idea of education and specifically, the education of their children. The analytical part of the paper will study the reasons given why some children in Vimperk are educated in the primary school while others are placed in the primary practical sector. With the help of questionnaires and face-to-face interviews, I will try to determine the reasons for the differences in the education of Roma children.
Myth and reality of gipsy population
HLOUCH, Vojtěch
The coexistence of Czech and Roma communities is beset with numerous issues. Despite the Roma population being a part of the country?s population for centuries, the Roma still find themselves foreigners within the society, perceive the Czech population as hostile and reject even its positive values. The Roma minority blames the Czech society for coldness, hostility and above all discrimination, xenophobia and racism. The Czech population on the other hand upbraids the Roma for noisiness, lack of education, poor work ethics, high unemployment and crime rates, among other things. The theoretical part of the paper is divided according to separate issues relevant for the Roma population in the Czech Republic. The history of the Roma population is presented, since it is considered a notable part of history as well as a significant factor in the current situation. The theoretical part also presents the issues of myth and stereotype, forming a part of any society and affecting its actions from its historical beginnings to the present time. This part of the paper also introduces other key topics relevant for the Roma minority, such as coexistence with the majority society, levels of education, unemployment, crime rates, and socially excluded neighbourhoods. For the practical part of the work, plausible hypotheses were developed for the two objectives described above, to be verified or disproved by practical experiment. H 1: More than half of the representatives of the investigated majority holds the opinion that Roma employment is less than one-third. H 2: The representatives of the investigated majority in more than half amount have personally or vicariously encountered crime perpetrated by Roma. H 3: Representatives of the majority society believes that the most common source of finance for Roma in the investigated localities are social benefits. H 4: Most of the representatives of the investigated majority hold the opinion that Roma are poorly mindful of their children's education. H 5: Most of the majority society in the village of Větřní is of the opinion that better education of Roma has no effect on better employment of Roma. For the practical part of the work, quantitative research employing controlled interview was used to obtain necessary data about the selected locations. The particular sites chosen were: in České Budějovice, the housing estate ?Máj? at the V. Volf Street and its surroundings; in Český Krumlov, the housing estate ?Mír? and the surroundings of the Lipová Street. In the village of Větřní, the research focused on the geographically lower part of the settlement. All three locations are considered socially excluded according to an analysis of socially excluded neighbourhoods. 50 respondents were interviewed in each of České Budějovice and Český Krumlov, and 30 respondents were interviewed in Větřní. The thesis set out to achieve two tasks. The first was to identify the perceptions held by the majority society about the Roma minority in the selected neighbourhoods and about its some of the issues. This objective was achieved, and the practical part of the paper describes in detail the perceptions of the majority society about the minority and its issues. The second task was to describe the differences in these perceptions between the investigated neighbourhoods. This second objective was also achieved. In the practical part of my thesis I have confirmed that the perceptions between the investigated neighbourhoods about the minority is not very different.
Specifics of Romany children's Nursing
VEJSADOVÁ, Pavlína
The Romany ethnic group is the largest minority which is living in Czech Republic. This minority group is often characterized as problematic especially due to its specific way of life and different value ladder. These oddnesses are apparent already in the childhood. Also family takes a very spontaneous approach to the Romany child upbringing. Romany child goes to sleep when he wants eats when he wants and no demands are placed on him. Frequent phenomenon is also absence of the preschool education which plays a crucial role in the preparation for the elementary school. Thus into the hospital environment comes often child who was used to his closed world in which he talked only Romany and was surrounded only by his family. Nurse has in that moment a difficult task to provide high quality culture specific care to the ethnic group which is in eyes of society and often also in the eyes of the nurse herself problematic and covered with prejudice. Subject for this bachelor thesis are the specifics of hospital care for child Romany patient. Target of the practical part is to define the specifics of the medical care for child Romany patient. Research was done in form of qualitative research with help of half-standardized interviews method with the nurses working in the children´s inpatient ward. Interviewed were 7 nurses with the wide spread of education level starting from secondary professional education in the subject nurse and paediatric nurse up to nurses with bachelor degree. Second research universe were Romany children in the age of 5 ? 7 hospitalized on the paediatric ward block. By the child patients the hidden observation has been used focused on the social contact with other patients and personnel, motor skills, level of self-care and verbal language. Second part was the hidden observation focused on the care given by nurses on paediatric ward blocks. Nurses were observed by daily activities. Evaluated was especially application of the culture specifics into the offered care and communication with the child while invasive intervention has been executed. To the facts which emerged from the interview belongs that majority of interviewed nurses confess reflecting of prejudice into medical care. They count among clear specifics in communication of Romany child especially insufficient knowledge of Czech language. In the area of self-care they perceive as a crucial deficit putting on the clothes and hygiene. The majority of the observed nurses did not include the specifics into the provided medical care. During the observation was discovered that the nurses do not have enough knowledge and experience for providing the culture specific medical care. Second part of the observation was focused on the Romany child patients and their specifics in the verbal language, self-care, behaviour towards other patients and medical staff, motor activities and playing activities. In this part the statements of nurses concerning the insufficient vocabulary and the lack of self-care in terms of putting on the clothes and hygiene was confirmed. From the results of the research emerged that the medical care for the Romany patient has its specific, which the nurses cannot work with and which they cannot apply into the provided medical care. In the area of communication with the family should the nurse be that active person and involve the family into the care for Romany child. Romany child is very spontaneous, it gives an impression of ill-breeding and does not respect social rules. On the other hand it has also positive personality traits as responsiveness, sense for a game, sincerity and openness. Nurses should therefore have a thought about the sense of hospital care a try to see in human beings especially positive personality traits and use them to the fulfilment of the medical care targets and for prevention and support of health of the small Romany patient.

The main aim of the thesis was to find out what kind of secondary schools pupils of Romani ethnicity prefer, whether they completed the education or finish it untimely. Whether pupils and students from the social disadvantaged background get help from assistant pedagogues for children during their studies. Furthermore we investigated if Romani students of grammar schools take advantage of grant from the state to study. The most preferred types of grammar schools among Romani were vocational schools. Only small amount of respondents chose vocational schools with the enclosure of finished leaving examination. Through that result had to be proved or disapproved the formulated hypothesis: Romani minority completes the secondary schools education. This hypothesise was disproved, as most of the Romani pupils did not complete their secondary school education. The thesis points out the factors which influence the Romani ethnicity attitude towards the education and the process of studying. Records of the thesis are beneficial for practice as the schools which were engaged in this research continue in cooperation with us. As a feedback we provided the records of this research to schools as they may use the information for better orientation what students expect from the education , how to approach it or the choice of study they prefer. At the same time the records of the research may be used as an informative and educational material for public and specialists.
