Comparision of weight gain among fully breast-fed infants and those artificially fed
NOVÁKOVÁ, Eliška
The objective of the present Bachelor thesis titled "Comparison between weight gain in fully breastfed infants and weight gain in bottle fed infants" is to explore mothers' approach to breastfeeding and complementary food regarding their children from birth until completed six months of age. Specifically, this Bachelor thesis consists in comparison of children, who were divided into three groups: Infants who were exclusively breastfed until completed six months of age, without any complementary food or liquids. The second group is made up of children who were breastfed and administered complementary food for health or similar reasons. Finally, the third group comprises children who were given complementary food from birth and were not breastfed. The aforesaid theme was selected by the authoress for the reason that she herself is a mother to a one and a half year old daughter and associates with mothers among whom the above theme is frequently discussed. Most often, mothers focus on advantages of breastfeeding and draw a great distinction with respect to those children who are given complementary food. The theoretical part of the Bachelor thesis delves into the main differences between breast milk, cow's milk and formula milk. In addition, complementary food is studied, in particular as regards the timing when non-milk complementary food should be introduced, what types of vegetables should be chosen, or how complementary food should be prepared and served to infants. The research-based part focused on whether mothers breastfeed. If the answer was in the negative, mothers were asked to provide a reason, whether they were unable or did not want to breastfeed. Mothers were also asked what types of milk formulas they administer to their babies. A great selection of children's milk formulas is available on the market to satisfy everyone. Every child has different needs and there are also differences in prices of artificial milk products. Mothers were asked about the age of their children when complementary food is introduced to their diet and what type of complementary food is most often chosen at the beginning. In the past, carrot was exclusively the first complementary food to be administered to children; however, since it is thought today that carrot is too sweet, mothers prefer pumpkin puree.

Breastfeeding women's awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding
Poukarová, Hana ; Matulová, Martina (advisor) ; Floriánková, Marcela (referee)
The aim of the present study is to determine the level of awareness of breastfeeding benefits among breastfeeding women. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part describes the history of breastfeeding, the composition of breast milk, prerequisites for successful breastfeeding and contraindications to breastfeeding. Furthermore, the benefits of breastfeeding for the child and the mother are discussed, together with factors affecting breastfeeding. In addition, the availability of information on breastfeeding in the Czech Republic is also briefly mentioned. In the practical part of my thesis, I used a method of quantitative research - specifically, an anonymous non-standardized questionnaire of my own design that was distributed to breastfeeding women. I based the questionnaire on the predetermined objectives and research questions. I chose the PAPI (paper and pen interviewing) survey method and used basic descriptive statistical methods (namely, absolute and relative frequencies) to interpret the results. The aim of the study was to determine breastfeeding women's awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding for both the baby and the mother and also to identify the most commonly utilized sources of information about breastfeeding. The research was carried out in...

This diploma thesis deals with the evaluation of clinical manifestations in infants with allergic colitis and their overall nutritional status, anthropometry, blood count and antibodies against cow's milk proteins. Allergic colitis is one of the most common manifestations of infant allergy to cow`s milk protein with gastrointestinal involvement. The theoretical part summarizes the anthropometric evaluation of growth and development, infant nutrition, the most important laboratory indicators of nutritional status. The part is generally devoted to food allergies, mainly allergy to cow's milk protein. The practical part deals with the evaluation of a sample of examined patients in gastroenterology outpatient clinics and nutritional outpatient clinic of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and General Hospital in Prague. Human milk bank and their reason
PODLAHOVÁ, Pavla
This bachelor thesis is dedicated to banks of human milk and their purpose. The paper is divided into theoretical part, which describes the lactation's development, the composition of breast milk, techniques and advantages of breast feeding and a practical part. History of human milk banks, their function and utilization are also included. The practical part of this thesis consists of qualitative and quantitative research. Two research goals were set up - to get to know about specifics of work of the staff in human milk banks and to map the mothers' awareness of the possibility of human milk banks utilization after childbirth. In terms of the goal one, a research question was set: VO1: What are the specifics of work of the staff in human milk banks? In terms of the second goal, the hypothesis was set: H1: Are there any differences in awareness within mothers of babies who are born in term versus those who are born before the term of the possibility to utilize human milk banks? The qualitative research was done through questioning, in-depth interview method. The research sample was made up from the staff working in human milk banks, the interview was done with 4 workers. The interviews were transcribed and analysed thanks to "pen - paper" method. They were further divided into three categories and fifteen subcategories. The research question was set up: What are the specifics of work of the staff in human milk banks? The outcomes of the research showed that the staff in human milk banks are mostly working with the donors of breast milk, which is further being examined, pasteurized and frozen. The quantitative part was made through questionnaire in social media with the total number of 1000 respondents. The outcomes of the research were graphically represented and added by verbal comments. Hypothesis verification was done thanks to chi square test. The zero hypothesis was tested against the alternative hypothesis with the level of significance of 5 %. Afterwards the level of significance was compared with the final value from chi square test. The hypothesis H1 ended up with the result of < 0,1 %. This result means that the mothers of babies who are born before the term have bigger awareness about human milk banks. 91,2 % of respondents are sufficiently informed about the human milk banks. This bachelor thesis can be used as an informative source to women, students of midwifery as well as the source of information for various conferences.

The physical characteristics of secondary schoolchildren in relation to type of nutrition in infancy
REJTHAROVÁ, Denisa
The aim of this bachelor thesis was to elaborate a research of available Czech and foreign literature and to carry out a study to assess the body dimensions of the 14-year-old age group. Body height, weight, circumferential dimensions (right arm, abdomen, hips, right thigh) and skin algae (above triceps, subscapular, suprailiacal and thigh) were measured and assessed. The follow-up included both infants exclusively breastfed at least 4 months of age, and breastfed children, and infants, who were artificially fed. By comparing the average values of all measured body characteristics of secondary school children with different feeding patterns in infancy, statistically significant differences in values were calculated only in the circumference of the right arm and the right thigh between girls in favor of breastfed girls. Other differences in mean values were not statistically significant. Comparing the data of previous researches with the average values of measured probands, we can say that the average BMI values of secondary school boys and girls increase according to the 1999 and 2001 surveys due to a more pronounced increase in average body weight values and a less pronounced increase in body height. Comparing the average values of the measured probands with the data of the reference sets, it was found that since 1985 the peripheral dimensions of the boy ´s hips and thighs have been increasing significantly. The circumferential dimensions of the arms, hips and thighs of our nursing girls have been increasing since the year 1985, but there has been a significant reduction in the circumference of the abdomen. The average values of all skin algae are increasing compared to the 1985 data.
