Awareness of population issues in the context of weapons of mass destruction

The aim of this diploma thesis was "To Analyse the awareness of the population in the area of South Bohemia region in context of emergencies in case of using weapons of mass destruction". In the theoretical part of the thesis the issue of the weapons of mass destruction is described from the description of particular groups to some historical consequences, to their arrangement or detailed description of the main types of weapons, and their harmful effects on a human body. As the issue is really wide, the main text is focused on the basic specification for easier understanding. Not many details are presented, but the most important information and some sidelights were given the priority. The target of the thesis was not to prepare a detailed and broad description, but on the other hand the comprehensive view of the studied issue, so a reader can obtain clear and brief analysis of the topic. For the practical part of the thesis the quantitative research and the method of a survey for obtaining data were chosen and done from January to March 2019. The questionnaire consists of four parts. Each part is specifically orientated. In the introductory part of the questionnaire there are three initial questions given to divide the responders according to their gender, age and education. After that there is the part A, which consists of ten questions, and it is aimed at the public awareness about the issue of public safety. The other parts B, C and D have five questions each, and they are aimed at the particular weapons of mass destruction - chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. The main goal of the survey was to find the level of the public awareness in South Bohemia region. The obtained data show that the correct answers reached approx. 55 %, but the range of all particular correct answers was from 30 % up to 83 %. These results show that there is potential room for improvement of the public awareness by simple and well-arranged brochures, by creating professional web-sides or groups for modern society that can use social network such as Facebook or Instagram. The diploma thesis can be also used as an educational material.

LEGAL ASPECTS OF WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION, ABSTRAKT V ANGLICKÉM JAZYCE The aim of this rigorosum thesis is to create an overview of weapons of mass destruction (including their development and history, combat deployment and their subsequent effect on the international community), to evaluate their status and combat deployment on the basis of custom or international agreements and to further critically evaluate the newest regulation of weapons of mass destruction (i.e. development from the latter half of the 20thcentury), its effectiveness as well as possibilities of further development. In general terms, this thesis deals with international law, only briefly touching legislation on the national level. The first chapter consists of a brief introduction. The second chapter includes a list of basic terminology, e.g. definitions for weapons of mass destruction, biological, chemical and nuclear weapons, international law, law of war, law of customs, international agreements, forbidden means of combat and prohibited ways of conducting armed conflicts. Prohibited means and manners of conducting armed conflicts

The goal of this diploma thesis is to present an overview of the most used chemical and biological weapons, as well as to explain their development, the links between them and their existence through the viewpoint of then contemporary sources, written or otherwise, as well as the current state of law in term of its effectivity and actual practice. The primary focus of this thesis is international law. National law is touched upon only sporadically. The first section of the thesis deals with the definition of used nomenclature, specifically the terms weapons of mass destruction, chemical and biological weapons, international law, law of armed conflicts, customary law, international treaties, forbidden means and methods of warfare. A look at the earliest history of chemical and biological weapons follows, including a brief assessment of the lack of legal regulation. The purpose of this chapter is to outline the very beginnings of this subject matter and to serve as a basis for the following chapters. Prohibitied Means and Methods of Warfare - Biological Weapons and Chemical Weapons The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the effectiveness of legislation banning the development, production, stockpiling, using and subsequent destruction of biological and chemical weapons and how are conventions, which prohibit the aforementioned, followed. I deal with these areas so I concluded if biological and chemical weapons still pose a threat to the world. During solving these objectives, I have focused on the classification of the prohibition of biological and chemical weapons to the law of armed conflicts and disarmament law, and whether the prohibition of the use of biological and chemical weapons is considered as part of customary law. Professional publications in the field of international law, political science, military, medicine and others were used to achieve the objectives of the research. Interpretations of a negative result of the British parliament vote on military intervention in Syria

On August 21 2013 a massive chemical attack took place in Syria. On the basis of the attack the British Prime Minister convened parliament and asked the House of Commons for the approval of a military intervention in Syria. The government motion was however disapproved by 285:272 votes and therefore the possible military intervention and the further voting on this issue was blocked. Right after the vote a series of possible causes and consequences occurred. This bachelor thesis "Interpretations of a negative result of the British parliament vote on military intervention in Syria" tries to systematically analyze possible causes and identify the main factors, which contributed to the negative result. Then it tries to justify why Britain as a country with long history of humanitarian intervention refused to intervene in a country where one of the greatest humanitarian crisis of the 21st century takes place. The title of the thesis is forbidden means and ways of conducting armed conflicts. Obviously, this topic is too broad, so thesis is focused on the issue of chemical and biological weapons. These devices are among the weapons of mass destruction and undoubtedly pose one of the major dangers of the contemporary world. The overall goal of this work is to provide perspective on the issue of chemical and biological weapons from a historical perspective and particularly from a perspective of the international law. International legal documents are viewed in historical and political context. Through this analysis of international treaties, we can "effectively" consider their impacts and responses in a "real world". The first part of the thesis serves as a historical introduction with some interesting chapters from early history of chemical and biological weapons. The second part deals with the birth of these weapons in a new and modern form in the 19th century. Great attention is paid to the period of the World War I. It was in this global conflict in which chemical weapons were used in their modern form and in the most massive form at the same time. Development and use of chemical weapons

This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of chemical weapons usage. Its goal is to assess the relevance of chemical weapons in terms of their development, usage, and international limitation, prohibition or liquidation efforts, as well as to determine whether they currently present a threat and if so, what kind. The thesis first presents a brief characteristic of the historical development of chemical weapons, international efforts for their limitation or prohibition, and subsequently the individual types of chemical weapons and means of delivery during conflicts. In the practical section, the author then focuses on 20th and 21st century armed conflicts in which chemical weapons were used or could have been used. Using an analytical-descriptive method, these conflicts are evaluated in terms of the very nature of the conflict, the circumstances surrounding the deployment of chemical weapons, the types of chemical weapons used, their impact on the final result of the conflict, and more importantly, the influence that relevant international treaties or previous experience and political characters of the countries in question had on the decision to use or not use them. Other specific areas dealt with are chemical terrorism and the Czech Republic´s initiative regarding chemical weapons. In the end, results of the performed analysis and a discussion are given by the author, in which he presents the conclusions made from the stated information as well as his own opinions on the given issue.

History and Present Status of the Chemical Weapons

In the first part, this bachelor thesis deals with the history of chemical weapons from the high antiquity to present. In the next part, the thesis concentrates on the international Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (1993) with a special focus on the current status of its implementation in the area of the destruction of chemical weapons and chemical warfare agents. The final part of the thesis is aimed at the current national regulations on the prohibition of chemical weapons and at the implementation of these measures in the conditions of the Czech Republic. The control activity of the State Office for Nuclear Safety is evaluated primarily and its possible improvement is suggested.

Threats to NATO external borders in the Middle East

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the current security dilemma in Syria with the focus on production, use, and the process of disposal of chemical weapons and its impacts. Specifically, the thesis addresses the issue of Syria's chemical weapons in the context of threats to NATO external borders. Degree of Security in the region and Resistance effort are measured according to RAND. Consequently, phases of Chemical weapons Program implementation in Syria are analyzed according to ACWA model. Possible risks and threats are summarized in SWOT analysis. Indeed, results obtained from theoretical and analytical part of this thesis draw possible scenarios and suggest recommendations for dislocation and disposal of reported chemical agents and weapons located on the territory of Syrian Arab Republic.
