Concentration distribution of coarse-grained particle-water mixture in horizontal pipe
Vlasák, Pavel ; Chára, Zdeněk ; Konfršt, Jiří ; Krupička, Jan
The paper describes the results of coarse-grained particle-water mixture measurements in an experimental pipeline loop of inner diameter 100 mm. Graded basalt pebbles of mean diameter 11 mm, conveyed by water, were investigated. The concentration distribution measurements were carried out with application of gamma-ray based device. Presented results refer to the effect of mixture velocity and overall concentration on chord-averaged concentration and local concentration distribution in the horizontal pipe. The study revealed that the coarse-grained particle-water mixtures were significantly stratified, solid particles moved principally close to the pipe invert, for higher and moderate flow velocities saltation becomes dominant mode of the sediment transport.
Simulation of motion of multiple particles in a closed conduit using the LBM based approach
Dolanský, Jindřich
The two-dimensional numerical model of motion of multiple circular particles in fluid flow based on the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is presented. The flow is driven by the power-law velocity profile at the inlet in a closed horizontal conduit. Motion of particles consists of free motion in the flow, particle-bed and particle-particle collisions. The simulation for both movements of particles and velocity field of the flow is developed. Stability issues of the simulation are considered and a resolution using the entropic LBM and extension of computational resources is proposed. Finally, an enhancement of the simulation for more complex processes is suggested
Coarse-grained particles conveying along a pipe bed
Vlasák, Pavel ; Chára, Zdeněk ; Konfršt, Jiří ; Kysela, Bohuš
The paper describes the results of a flow visualisation of model coarse-grained fully stratified particle-water mixtures. Investigation was focussed on study of the particle behaviour and carrier liquid and conveyed particles local velocities. Glass balls and washed graded pebble gravel of mean diameter of 6 mm were conveyed by water in a horizontal smooth pipe loop with a transparent pipe viewing section of inner diameter 40 mm. Particle movement along the pipe invert and particulate stationary bed, created by two layers of spherical particles of the same size as the conveyed particles, was studied. The effect of stationary bed on local velocity values of the carrier liquid and conveyed particles were determined. It was conducted that the maximum liquid velocity is significantly shifted from pipe centre to a higher position in the flow pattern with stationary bed.
Sedimentation of dilute suspension in intermediate region
Vlasák, Pavel ; Chára, Zdeněk
The present paper describes the results of experimental investigation of the continuous sedimentation of a dilute model of fine-grained suspension in the intermediate region of settlement. The effects of particle size (glass beads of average diameter 150–850 μm), concentration, and inclination of the vessel axis on particle fall velocity were evaluated. It was confirmed that the local relative particle-liquid velocity has a practically constant value across the vessel cross-section. The settling pattern is strongly affected even by a very gentle slope of the vessel axis, which causes an asymmetrical absolute velocity profile and significant increase of the local concentration and absolute fall velocity of particles near the upward-facing wall of the vessel.
Collision of a rotating spherical particle with flat wall in liquid
Lukerchenko, Nikolay ; Kvurt, Y. ; Chára, Zdeněk ; Vlasák, Pavel
The collision of the rotating spherical particle with a flat wall in liquid was studied experimentally. The glass and steel beads rotating in water and silicon oil were used. A high-speed video system recorded the bead motion before and after the collision. It was shown that the restitution coefficient depends not only on the Stokes number but also on the particle angular velocity; the restitution coefficient decreases with increasing of the rotational Reynolds number and decreasing of the Stokes number. These results can be useful in modelling of the two-phase flows near solid boundaries.
Coarse-particles conveying in pipes
Vlasák, Pavel ; Kysela, Bohuš ; Chára, Zdeněk
Flow behavior of coarse-grained slurry depends generally on particle size, shape, density and concentration. The present paper describes the results of experimental investigation of the model coarse-grained slurries on the pipe loop of inner diameter 36 mm with smooth pipes. Graded pebble gravel and glass balls conveyed in water were studied. Research was focused on evaluation of the effect of slurry velocity and concentration on hydraulic gradient versus slurry velocity relationship and the slurry flow behavior. Particle distribution in the pipe vertical cross section and motion of particles along the pipe bottom were studied in a transparent pipe section.
Effect of dense slurry composition on its flow behaviour in horizontal pipe
Vlasák, Pavel ; Chára, Zdeněk
The paper deals with experimental investigation of the dense fine-grained slurries focused on the slurry pressure drops versus average velocity relationship. The content of fine, especially colloidal solid particles evokes a complex non-Newtonian behaviour of the slurry. Flow behaviour of dense slurry depends on particle size distribution, shape, density and chemical composition of the solid phase as well as on concentration of solids and carrier liquid properties. The re-circulation pipe loop with horizontal hydraulically smooth stainless steel pipes was used for measuring the slurry flow parameters. Different slurries containing kaolin, stony dust or sand conveyed in water were measured to document effect of the size distribution and chemical composition on the slurry flow behaviour.
