The Gothic Elements of David Mitchell's Slade House

This thesis introduces the tradition of the English Gothic novel and defines the basic themes, motives, and poetics, and names the representatives of the Gothic literary tradition in the English novel. The following chapter introduces the author David Mitchell and his work in the context of contemporary British literature in comparison with other authors of the Gothic tradition in contemporary literature (Neil Gaiman). The core of the work is a literary analysis of the novel Slade House, which focuses on the narrative technique of the novel (alternation of narrators), Gothic elements of horror atmosphere and suspense gradation, elements of fantastic literature (ghosts in the house) and the concept of a haunted house based on the studies of M. Aguirre (The Closed Space), etc. The thesis mentions Royle´s theoretical concept of The Uncanny and in the final section it attempts to capture the essence of the concept in Mitchell´s Slade House.
Corpus Analysis of Language in Sports Columns

The bachelor thesis deals with analysis of language of the chosen sports columns. Theoretical part is dedicated to the language devices typical for journalism, special attention is paid to non-marked and marked expressions. The content of the practical part is an analysis of data of The Czech National corpus which are compared to tabloid journalism.
Use of African Americans in Medical Experimentation: Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment

This Bachelor Thesis deals with the topic of experimental studies on African Americans in the United States during twentieth century. As a racially discriminated group, African Americans have long been abused in a number of experiments. Due to segregation, especially in medical facilities, experimental treatments were performed without informed consent of the patient; experiments with radiation were also performed in medical facilities; drugs, cosmetics and the effects of diseases on human body were tested in prisons and many more. The Thesis aims to describe these different types of experiments and discover how and whether the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s was influenced by these experiments. The Thesis is divided into two parts, the first part reflects a broader view of the issue and its subchapters represent different types of experiments along with specific examples, while the second part examines the syphilis experiments in Tuskegee, which is, because of its scope, length and influence one of the most infamous symbols of unethical experimentation on African American subjects. Czech sing language comprehansion by students of secondary schools for the deaf

This diploma thesis deals with the education and communication of students with hearing impairment with a focus on the analysis of the level of understanding of information in sign language for students of special secondary schools for the hearing impaired. The theoretical part presents important concepts in this area, such as the definition of communication and communication options for the hearing impaired, as well as educational opportunities for the hearing impaired from a preschool level to a university and last but not least sign languages, their research in the world and Czech sign language as a native language of people with hearing impairment in the Czech Republic. The empirical part describes the research, which was conducted on 65 probands - high school students of the special school for students with a hearing impairment. The research is focused on the differences in the level of understanding of groups of students according to their identification data and also examined whether comprehension is affected by the complexity of the information transmitted (i.e. whether information at the level of ordinary conversation is better understood than a professional information).
