Tussentaal lives: the position of the language variety tussentaal (in-between-language) in present-day Belgian Dutch

This bachelor thesis focuses on tussentaal, a language variety of Belgian Dutch that contains elements of both the standard language and of dialects, and examines its portrayal in two genre- different contemporary Flemish television series. The theoretical part of the thesis first outlines the history of the Dutch language in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium), i.e., since the division of the southern and northern parts of the former Low Countries, and then touches on the process of standardisation of Belgian Dutch. After outlining the current language situation in Flanders, the thesis defines tussentaal and lists several morphosyntactic, lexical and phonological features of this language variety. Furthermore, it addresses the position of tussentaal with an emphasis on its status in contemporary television fiction. Using a corpus compiled by transcribing the first episodes of two contemporary Flemish television series, the analytical part describes and compares the portrayal of tussentaal in the teen show wtFOCK and the thriller De twaalf through a selection of typical tussentaal features from the phonological, morphosyntactic and lexical levels. Eenvoudige taal. Principles of plain language in Dutch compared with German and Czech.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe the intra-textual properties of simplified texts in Dutch (eenvoudige taal) and to compare them with simplified texts in both German (Leichte Sprache) and Czech (jednoduchá čeština). The theoretical part focuses on language policy, the history, principles, and legislative anchoring of simple language in the different language areas, and on research possibilities in the field of text readability. The empirical part analyses texts issued by the Dutch and German state administrations as part of official COVID-19 pandemic communications made to their respective citizenries, their translation into simplified form, as well as texts on the same topic available in jednoduchá čeština. The research results indicate that the communication of the Dutch administration is comprehensible in both standard and simplified form; therefore, eenvoudige taal follows the principles of simple language. Texts in Leichte Sprache, on the other hand, are overly complex even though it is a simplified form. Texts in jednoduchá čeština are the most comprehensible according to the readability tests. Classification of adjectives in Dutch

This diploma thesis deals with the semantics of Dutch adjectives, their categorization and internal classification. The first section observes and analyses the criteria for delimiting adjectives as an independent word class and establishing adjectival subcategories, as dictated by the most influential Dutch grammar publications. One key area of focus is the concept of gradability and its role in delimiting and classifying adjectives. These definitions and classifications are confronted using the scalar approach, according to which adjectives represent a scale of properties and may be sorted depending on which type of scale they express. The practical section comprises a corpus study whose aim is to examine the validity of the assumptions formulated in the theoretical introduction regarding the gradability of adjectives. Using a sample of 100 adjectival lemmas with the lowest coefficient value for the likelihood of gradability, acquired from the Dutch language corpora CGN and SoNaR, the study follows a set of morphological, syntactic, semantic and discourse variables which may warrant the use of the comparative or superlative even with adjectives which are generally considered to be ungradable. Migration, language and integration (Comparison of the Netherlands and Flanders in the 1970s and 1980s)

This bachelor thesis deals with the Dutch and Flemish policies towards immigrants in the 1970s and 1980s and the role attributed to language in them. It examines the arguments and concepts by which both the policies were motivated and legitimated and evaluates critically their usual periodization. It points out the risk of a wrong reading of the Dutch "tweesporenbeleid" of the 1970s as based on multiculturalism instead of expectation of return of the immigrants into their home country. It concentrates on the Minderhedennota of 1981/83 as the main turning point leading to the interpretation of the allochton-issue as socio-economic problem and examines the public debate on the basis of documents of the Dutch parliament. The acquisition of Dutch as second language, it states, always played a crucial role in the policies. Since the 1980s, more attention was paid to evaluation of school curricula in terms of non-discrimination of non-native speakers. In the Flemish case, less systematical approaches were stated. Ditransitive Constructions in Contemporary Czech

This bachelor thesis deals with constructions like naložit seno na vůz / vůz (senem) (to load the hay onto the truck / the truck (with the hay)), i.e. alternations of direct objects of a verb, in contemporary Czech. In these constructions the verb allows two situational participants to alternate in the direct object slot, which can be associated with changes of surface structure. These alternations are considered as metonymical changes, allowed by the combination of the verb meaning and the contiguity relation between its both arguments. The corpus-based analysis is used to examine the co-occurence of structural determinants (discourse accessibility, pronominality, phrase length) with respective variants and the possibility to predict the occurrence of the respective variant by employing these structural determinants. The influence of grammatical profiles of Czech nouns on their acquisition by non-native speakers

The present thesis examines the influence of Czech nouns frequency features on their acquisition by non-native speakers. The first theoretical part summarizes the ongoing discussion regarding the importance of frequency for the entrenchment of grammatical categories in one's mind as outlined by cognitive and psycho-linguists abroad. The second introduces the research methodology, collection method and annotation of 20 lemmas obtained from non-native Czech speaker corpus CzeSL-SGT. Subsequently, an analysis of selected nouns is carried out with regard to their grammatical profiles (comprising two or three most frequent case forms as found in SYN2015). Based on its results, the production of non-native speakers shows a tendency to follow grammatical profiles as demonstrated by high correspondence of frequency features of nouns on the one hand and by low error rate in morphology of most frequent forms on the other. Additionally, cases where lower rate does not correspond to the above mentioned model can be explained using type frequency, i.e. the productivity of particular declension models having simultaneously more far-reaching effect, and higher relevance of nominative as the default form for non-native speakers.
