Current Problems in 2D Numerical Modelling of Water Flow in the River Channels

Currently, the use of two-dimensional numerical models in modelling water flow in river channels and floodplains is quite common. The quality of hydraulic calculation results is influenced by the number of input parameters. However, crucial in this context is primarily the availability of calibration data. Commonly used data from historical flood records are often burdened with significant uncertainties and, in many cases, are completely lacking. One option to ensure suitable calibration data is to measure flow rates and velocity fields in selected calibration profiles, e.g., using the ADCP method (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler). The presented article showcases the authors' experiences with the calibration of a 2D numerical model applied to a real location, specifically using the mentioned method. The focus of the calibration lies mainly in the values of Manning’s roughness coefficients and parameters of turbulent models. The conclusion of the article includes a discussion of the results and recommendations for further research directions in the field, which appear promising for practical applications.
Determination of Small Discharges of Water by Triangular Notch Thin-Plate Weirs

The work deals with the determination of relatively small discharges of clear water using a thin-plate weir with a triangular notch. Based on a detailed search of contemporary knowledge, the scope of the necessary experimental research was defined in the range of parameters practically suitable for the determination of small discharges. It was about extending the range of notch angles by small angles, defining the minimum weir height depending on the notch angle, determining the influence of the minimum value of the weir height and the width of the approach channel on the discharge and investigating the effect of water temperature on the discharge. Extensive experimental research was carried out involving changes in the notch angle, head, weir height, approach channel width and water temperature. The uncertainties of the measured data were quantified. By analysing possible ways of expressing small water discharges using thin-plated weirs with a triangular notch and based on the measured data, a new equation for determining water discharges was recommended as the most suitable. The new equation combines the Kindsvater-Shen approach, which captures the cumulative effects of viscosity and surface tension, and the approach of covering the effect of the relative width of the approach channel by introducing a new coefficient. By evaluating the measured data, the effective discharge coefficient, the relative width of the approach channel coefficient, the effective head and the limit head were determined in the newly proposed equation. The uncertainty of the determination of the effective discharge coefficient was quantified. Verification of the new equation was carried out by comparing the values calculated by the new equation and the values measured by other authors. The work extended the application possibilities of thin-plated weirs with a triangular notch in determination of small discharges of water and extended the knowledge of weir behaviour.
Optimization of Spillway Design Parameters

The diploma thesis is focused on the program development. The program is aimed at finding optimal design parameters for a two-pole emergency spillway. These parameters are the lengths of the spillway edges and their relative height arrangement. The program is based on the flood wave transformation simulation. Multi – gradient algorithm was used for optimization design parameters of a two-pole safety spillway.
Creating a Hydrological Model to Determine Maximum Runoff from a Small Catchments

The aim of the thesis is to set a hydrology model based on existed methodology DesQ-MaxQ, which comes from "Designing flows from a very small catchments" established in 1989. The model is able to set a nearest meteorology station and his 24-hours rainfall depths for periods of repetition 2,5,10,20,50 and 100 years. Substitute rainfall depths are set by "reduction of 24-hours rainfall depths" methodology. According to hydraulic and hydrology conditions of catchment, duration of the critical rains for each period of repetition are set also peak flow rates and total runoffs from the catchment. Application can work in two modes - "one slope" and "two slopes". The second option also includes calculation of design duration for the model catchment and superposition of hydrograph. Application RainRunoff was develop in C# programming language with graphic user interface and option to exports hydrographs.
River regulation with regard to the flood protection and revitalization

The bachelor's thesis is focused on the design of a suitable variant for the millrace revitalization of the Chrudimka river and the construction of a flood protection park in the urban area of the town of Chrudim. Within the thesis, first the current state of the solved locality is described, then three variants of a possible solution are proposed with regard to the limits of the given area. From the proposed variants the most suitable one is selected, which, with its processing, follows on from the already revitalized stream in the adjacent park. The selected variant for the given area is elaborated in more detail. As part of the processing, a 1D hydraulic model is created, which is compared with the hydraulic model of the current state. The thesis can serve as a basis for a possible realization of such project.
Using a Hybrid Method for Control the Storage Capacity of the Dam Reservoir

Bachelor thesis is focused on the selection of a suitable input regional climate model into the Hybrid method for the control of the storage function of water reservoirs. This control method is based on a suitable combination optimization method with the Support vector machines method. Selecting a suitable regional climate model is done by simulating the control of the storage function of water reservoirs Vír I in program Microsoft Exel. The simulation results of the hybrid control method are compared with other control methods. These methods are Adaptive control, Dispatcher graph, and control to Improved outflow.
Analysis of the Exploration Range of Triangular–Notch Thin–Plate Weirs

As first significant experiment with an overflow over triangular-notch thin-plate weirs can be considered Thomson's from 1858. Following Thomson's measurements, a number of experiments were performed, especially in the first half of the 20th century. Selected experiments were then summarized in 1981 by Shen. The article deals with the collection of available publications on the topic of overflow over triangular–notch thin–plate weirs until 2021 and analysis of the range of used geometric parameters and liquid properties, which were triangular–notch angle, upstream gauged head above crest level "overflow head", height of the crest relative to the floor, and the temperature of the used water.
