The Loreto Chapel in Rumburk

The theme of the bachelor thesis deals with the topic of the Loretan Chapel in Rumburk. Copies of Loretan Chapels spread out throughout Europe during the Baroque era. Santa Casa (Holy House) used to be a modest house in Nazareth where the Annunciation to Virgin Mary as well as the Immaculate Conception took place. According to a legend, the house was transferred by angels to Italian Loreto. An expensive transformation of the building was realised during the pontificate of Julius II., when the house was covered with epic marble panelling with the theme taken from the life of Virgin Mary. About fifty Loretan Chapels used to be built in Bohemia and the one in Rumburk belongs to the most spectaculous. The thesis introduces the building owner Anton Florián of Liechtenstein whose aim lay in constructing a Holy House) on his dominion in Rumburk. The introductory chapter describes the town's history as well as the Capuchin Monastery, which used to be a part and parcel of the Holy Hut. The second part provides with essential information about Santa Casa (Holy Hut/ Holy House) in Loreto together with a legend about a miraculous transfer of the building by angels.
