Güttnerová, Karolína ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Aplt, Daniel (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with the different picture of the political process with the "anti - state conspiracy center" headed by R. Slánský in the academic literature and press. The aim of the thesis is to compare the picture from the academic introduction as the historical event and the picture from the contemporary press. This will describe the functioning of the censorship and propaganda in the contemporary media. I have based the detailed insight into the nature of the preparation and realization of the process on archival materials and other sources, which illustrate the key political decisions and which demonstrate their, in accordance with the intentions of the propaganda, distorted reflection on selected daily newspapers. The quantitative content method has been used in the practical part as a research method. Through this method, articles from the contemporary press are processed. Through the evaluation of the research, clear conclusions have been reached. Those conclusions have been used in order to compare the picture of the process in the academic literature and in the censored daily press. The main contribution of this work is the fact that it brings the insight into the mechanism of the management and control of media in the early 50's of the 20th century, in connection with the...

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of censorship and propaganda on articles concerning the Monetary reform in 1953 in Czechoslovakia in period press. The goal of this study is to compare different images of the Monetary reform provided by non-fiction literature and period press. This study also offers familiarization with three contemporary journals. Articles from these journals are used as the particular examples of the knowledge gained from the literature. The empirical part of this study is based on the media content analysis. Data for this research were collected from the journals. The results provide some support for comparing the images and understanding censorship and propaganda. This study illustrates behaviour of media as the instrument of manipulation in socialistic Czechoslovakia.

Trestrová, Veronika ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Suk, Pavel (referee)
This thesis gives a comprehensive picture of the press organs of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in the district of Pardubice during the so-called normalization. The first chapter describes the historical contexts of this era, particularly changes in policy after the onset of Gustáv Husák at the head of the Communist Party in April 1969. With this change is related to another topic: extensive purges in the Communist Party, which took place in 1970. The second chapter focuses on changes in the media at the beginning of normalization, in particular the abolition of some periodicals and restoring censorship, and changes in the cultural field, especially strengthening the focus on the Soviet Union, the emergence of new artists' unions and various legal regulation in order to strengthen ideological supervision of the this sphere . The third and fourth sections are devoted East Bohemian press: daily newspaper Pochodeň, published in Hradec Králové, and Pardubice district newspaper Zář. It briefly describes the history of these newspapers and their effect during the Prague Spring and subsequent developments in normalization. Attention is then focussed mainly on their cultural sections and their scope, content and authors of articles. Analysis of the articles from the cultural sections provides an overview of...
Czech Union of Journalists during The Prague Spring
Suková, Jana ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Končelík, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor thesis describes the Czech Union of Journalists in the Prague Spring. The aim is not only to analyze details of the situation in the Union of Journalists, who in 1968 went trough a major ideological change, but also on the issue of the journalists in the long term. I want to focus on the development of Union in 1968 and attempt to find answers to these questions: When did the Union became the authority that supported the reform ideas of the late 60's? Why there was a break between the members of the journalistic organization? In addition this work should uncover the relationship between the general development of the situation in Czechoslovakia and the Union of Journalists, to explain some of the attitudes of journalistic organization at the time. Finally, the work does not neglect neither media area as Czechoslovak Television, Czechoslovak Radio and all printed materials which were always shaped mainly by journalists. Therefore this work deals with the close relationship between the Union of journalists and media in general. Especially, this relationship in my work is raised during the first days of the occupation that Czechoslovakia affected on 21st August 1968, during which the media, thanks to relentless work of journalists, has become indispensable organizers of social events.
Media image of the rock music in the Czechoslovak print media in the period of normalisation
Husák, Martin ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Cebe, Jan (referee)
The rigorosum thesis "Media image of the rock music in Czechoslovak print media in the period of normalisation" outlines the basic characteristics and features of the media's coverage of rock music from 1969 to 1989, relating to factors which shaped common music journalism standards both for official publications as well as the unofficial area of 'samizdat' magazine production. The aim of this research focuses on the role of rock music in Czechoslovak sociological and cultural development as well as on the censorship systems that undermined the qualitative values and principles of music journalism as a whole. On one hand, information for this thesis has been gained through oral historical accounts, on the other hand other methodical elements have been utilised to fulfill the defined goals in a more comprehensive way, i.e. by analysing descriptive and comparative perspectives, using samples from relevant periodicals. At the conclusion, the findings are supported by an analysis and interpretation of selected cultural and music events. They are divided according to the type and extent of media coverage received by official and samizdat periodicals.
Fifty years of Chomutov's weekly newspaper Nástup
Smrčková, Andrea ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Groman, Martin (referee)
The text deals with the history of Chomutov's weekly paper Nástup. I decided to write about this topic since I was born in Chomutov and I wanted to cover this part of the regional history. In 1960, weekly Nástup took up two village papers and followed regional political authorities in their ideology till 1989. I tried to cover the changes in the content and the personal constitution but I was interested in the price and the number of pages, too. Nástup supported the political and the social changes in 1968, gave opportunities to discussions and disputations. Nástup played an important role in the days after the occupation, because the journalist published Nástup every day for one week. They provided regional news as well as news about events in Czechoslovakia. At the beginning of the 70's, Nástup became the normalization medium. This change caused editorial staff had to leave and interrupted their journalist career for twenty years. All the time, citizens very often appealed to the weekly with their problems. They usually wrote about their troubles with institutions and offices and Nástup helped them to solve that problems. In the 80's, Nástup wrote about the ecological issues, and this topic was also actual in the next decades but the thematic coverage had been broadened. The main topics were...
Czech music journalism focused on rock music during the period of normalization
Husák, Martin ; Končelík, Jakub (advisor) ; Vedral, Jan (referee)
The thesis "Czech music journalism focused on rock music during the period of normalization" reflects the position and importance of Czech rock music journalism within the structure and development of normalization of the media system. It is brought back through the oral historical research based on authentic evidence of their protagonists. It defines the initial prerequisites (ideological, political and socio-cultural) which are important to understand the circumstances under which rock music could be created and developed into an institution. It all depended on the confrontational attitude of communist power towards rock music generally. The next methodic element how to fulfill the defined goals is descriptive and comparative perspective. On this basis there is confronted official and samizdat's area of magazine production on the example of chosen periodicals. There also belong other qualitative aspects of music journalism (personalization, professionalization and every day editorial job). At the end the accepted conclusions are supported by the analysis and interpretation of chosen cultural and music events. They are divided by the method of their media coverage from official and samizdat periodicals.
