Melodies from the underground. Music underground in northern Bohemia in the period of normalization

This Diploma Thesis deals with the musical underground in northern Bohemia during the period of so-called normalization. It aims to summarize the characteristics of the underground movement and conditions for music production in the informal culture, and deals mainly with the underground rock scene. The theoretical part focuses on understanding the underground movement from today's perspective and is critical to the created underground phenomenon by studying the written sources and by the analysis of interviews with witnesses. An authentic narration obtained by the oral history brings to the topic a personal view and conviction selected representatives, who, regardless of historical circumstances, were managed to mantain their inner freedom. Samples lyrics and the interpretation of the positions of the narrators are intended to help readers find other than just mythicised view of the underground in Czechoslovak history.
In the shadow of the Vír's reservoir. Disappearance of villages Chudobín and Korouhvice.

This master's thesis is about disposal of municipals Chudobín and Korouhvice, which ceased to exist in due to the construction Vír reservoir. While Chudobín brought the waterworks building complete extinction, for Korouhvice this reservoir construction wasn't so totally destructive - above the flood plain territory of the waterworks were built five new houses which were inhabited by indigenous people. The construction, which was built on the river Svratka in the 50's has very deep impact on human destinies and become one of the basic and essential element in that region. This thesis explores the historical development and character of both the flooded villages, river Svratka itself and even the idea of the construction and the actual implementation of that waterwork. A separate part of this thesis consists of the liquidation process itself, from its own preparations through depriving or buyout to search for new housing. The final part is about the development after finishing works on the reservoir - the new Korouhvice, life near the dam and restrictions imposed by the protection zone around the reservoir flow. Anticommunism in the Czech republic after 1989, focusing on the perspective of members of the KSČ/KSČM by oral history method

The thesis deals with the topic of anticommunism in the Czech republic after the year 1989. The main subject of the thesis was to describe how this development is perceived and reflected by members of KSČ/KSČM. The author approaches to this research issue by oral history method, through analyses and interpretation of obtained set of interviews: biographical narratives and structured interviews. The author answers to questions: how selected members of KSČ/KSČM define anticommunism, who are anticommunists according them, how they periodize this development and what personal experiences they have with anticommunism. There is also paid attention to question, why selected members of KSČ/KSČM have entered the communist party and why they remained member after year 1989. Than the text summarizes chronological development of anticommunism in Czech republic after year 1989: attempt to make "historical compromise" in the first months of revolution, than utilization of anticommunism for propagation "ideology of privatization" by right wing political parties in the first half of the nineties, gradual transformation of anticommunism to universal weapon of right wing campaign against the left political parties, mainly against ČSSD, with heyday in the year 2006 and decline of anticommunists mood after the year...
Mototechna: the issue of (in)sufficiency - a case study

The main objective of this thesis is to capture the complexity of the issue of insufficiency of automobiles and their spare parts in Czechoslovakia between years 1948 - 1989, with emphasis on the period of so called normalization (70s and 80s). "Framework" of this study is constituted by national company Mototechna - in that time almost monopoly seller of automobiles and spare parts, whose history and structure is an important part of this study and is therefore depicted in detail. Description of the development of motoring and car sales systems from the very first years following after the Second World War with a slight overlap to the 90s is also a pivotal content of this thesis. Chapters dedicated to grey economy and perception of automobile as an "object" from the "people's point of view" (in the researched period) are also constituent parts of this study, as they relate to the main topic very closely. Presented study is a result of research, which utilized method of oral history as well as contemporary written materials and present-day available literature. Eastern Slovaks' reflections of the year 1989. Biographical narratives

This diploma work deals with the reflections of Slovak citizens for 1989's, focusing at the region of Košice city and the surrounding area, especially eastern Slovakia. The fall of the communist regime influenced the further development of the whole of Czechoslovakia. Diploma work focuses at the Slovak nation, which is an integral part of Czechoslovak history, but Czech knowledge of Slovak region is severely restricted. Memories and stories of Eastern Slovak habitants are building blocks of this thesis used to factually illustrate that time. In addition, thesis is based both on the available literature sources and archival materials from the collections of the State Regional Archives in Košice city. The theoretical part of work is based on historical sources and results of various researches on November '89. The research part of the diploma work deals with views, opinions and attitudes of Eastern Slovak's participants of November 1989. Interviews with narrators are analyzed and interpreted using oral history methods. This diploma work aims to reflect the everyday life of people, their work and living conditions before and after November '89. The vanished village of Přísečnice in the memories of its inhabitants

This thesis explores the history of Přísečnice, a no longer existing village in the district of Chomutov, which had to give way to a construction project for a drinking water reservoir and dam of the same name in the early 1970's. The first part of the thesis briefly describes the history of Přísečnice up until 1945; the second part focuses on the village developments after World War II until its destruction. The latter part describes how the village evolved in the 1940's and 1950's, and depicts the municipal life in the 1960's as well. It also discusses the reasons why a decision was made to create the reservoir, traces back the construction project negotiations and the issues that arose at that time due to the plan to ruin Přísečnice and the surrounding settlements. This part also describes the actual process of destroying the village, which started by eliminating the cemetery early in 1970 and ended with the demolition of the last houses in 1974. The third part of the thesis reports on the lives of Přísečnice's former inhabitants after their relocation and looks at their current feelings toward the location where they had spent longer or shorter periods of their lives. The diploma thesis Economic and social interaction during Normalization era is is based on qualitative research. It deals with issues of system of return services and barter exchange in non - cash market in 1970's and 1980's in Czechoslovakia. The centrally planned economy was not able to produce enough consumer goods and meet the demand of the population. Employees, who worked in department stores, took easier approach to consumer goods than others. They excercised power over distribution and they traded some commodities for another services. As a research method applied is oral history. The primary sources used are narrative interview and secondary history literature.
Štefánik observatory - last 45 years seen by its employees

Main issues of this work are to describe the surrounding of Štefánik observatory and to extend knowledge about its wide history, specially the recent one. Cornerstones of this knowledge have become from interviews with the employees, who worked on Štefánik observatory during the normalization, possibly earlier; and some of them are still work there. The leading of the interviews was made by method of oral history. The work is based also on available bibliography, which concerns mostly to methodology; newspaper articles which relate to observatory history or important events. The text is primarily focused on interviews experiences and feelings and besides the work presents their testimony. In the text are worked up some topics, which concern to professional activity, relationships, perceptions of ages 1968 and 1989, and finally the projection the movies about Apollo programme. The goal of this work is not come to clear conclusions but to reflect experiences of interviewees into historical context, alternatively take a look into working life of Štefánik observatory employees. To the Economic and Political Development of the German Democratic Republic in the 1970s.

To the Economic and Political Development of the German Democratic Republic in the 1970s (Pavel Szobi) Abstract The thesis deals with the economic development of the German Democratic Republic in the 1970s. It characterizes the basic elements of real socialism and implementation of the main SED strategy for the studied period - the so called Unity of Economic and Social Policy. It evaluates single aspects and the impact on the political stability of the regime. The thesis determines effects of energetic policy, external debt and lack of foreign currency on the national economy. The author does not consider the economic failures, but the dictatorship itself to be the main reason for the regime decay. Restriction of human and civil rights, together with comparing the standard of living with the Federal Republic of Germany led to the rise of social policy expenses and an extensive subvention of the so called consumer socialism. These courses of action enabled to stabilize the GDR temporarily; however, it also made the main defects of central planning more visible. Not only a modern consumer society failed to form, but even supplying population with random goods remained an issue which is well documented in the thesis on the example of the so called coffee crisis.
