Documents to the history of the Napoleonic Wars at the family archives of Kinský. To the Czech ancestors of prince Józef Poniatowski

This paper regards two mutually linked objectives. The first of them is to picture the history of the old and significant dynasty of Kinský in the eighteenth century and during the Napoleonic Wars, which is supposed to back up the second and main objective, namely to describe the lifetimes of a few ancestors of the Polish prince and army-leader Józef Poniatowski, who was in service of Napoleon's armies, and who died in 1813 at the Battle of Leipzig. These ancestors were his parents Andrzej Poniatowski and Marie Terezie Kinská, following her father Jan Leopold Kinský of the Chlumec count stem. Andrzej Poniatowski and Leopold Kinský embody a certain similarity - they both have been wrongfully effaced; while Andrzej by his son, Leopold by his more famous ancestors who notably affected the Habsburg Empire in the end of the seventeenth and in the first half of the eighteenth century. I would like to, therefore, point out the importance of these two men, too.

Lower nobility in the towns and market-towns of the central Pilsen region in 17th and 18th century

The central Pilsen region is the useful example to study the lower nobility in 17th and 18th century. Some sources are well preserved in few towns in the region. The lowest nobility settled in royal towns (Plzen, Rokycany) and liege market-towns (Dobrany, Mesto Touškov, Všeruby). Different origins of this gentles constitute the most visible differences between this types of towns. In the royal towns, the main group of nobility was formed by commons with blazon and plain peerage. In the most cases, the nobility of higher states left till the middle of 17th century. During 17th and 18th century, the privilege of Pilsen constitutes a possibility to become a estate-owner in the Bohemian Kingdom. There was a particular lower nobility group in some of previously mentioned market towns. A presence of small estates in their neighborhood affected them to a significant extent. Their disappearance was the main reason, why lower nobility left Dobrany. On contrary, Všeruby and Mesto Touškov held their lower nobility during that age. The sources indicate a possible connection of discussed, in fact, foreign element in a liege society of market-towns to agriculture and brewing. This thesis explores the historiographical treatise Prodromus Gloriae Pragenae by Jan Florian Hammerschmidt (1652-1735). The study examines in close detail the structure and contents of this important work of Baroque historiography and topography, and attempts to identify the specific features of Hammerschmidt's treatment of his topic, primarily in comparison with his manuscript work Historia Pragensis. The focus is on outlining the quantity and variety of the sources used and on the evaluation of Hammerschmidt's approach to sources and historiographic literature. His (un-)critical approach to his predecessors as well as his research method are demonstrated on a number of examples.

Commendam the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star in Cheb durning the commandery of Georg Runner of Chvalšiny (1609-1632)

This work is dedicated to the history of Commendam the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star and to its hospital in the period, in which was Georg Runner functioning. He was working there in 1609-1632. I tried to put this person into connection with historical events in this region. I handle in detail about the religion circumstances in time of the biggest rapid development of Lutheranism, about conflict, which comes up between local catholic and protestant people, and about the first progress of rekatolization in Cheb, too. Another problem contains progress of economics estate of the commendam in this time. There are some property and jural conflicts for example. With economics situation are close connected the war affairs of very big importance in this time and this about is another chapter. Its place has the question of administration and common life in hospital. Authentic documents of the Knights of the Cross are the most significant resources for this work.

Jan Jiří Harant z Polžic a Bezdružic: the Czech nobleman and emigrant

Zatímco jméno a osobnost Kryštofa Haranta z Polžic a Bezdružic jsou v naší zemi všeobecně známy, jeho mladší bratr Jan Jiří není příliš známý ani mezi zájemci o historii. Na rozdíl od Kryštofa se totiž nezapsal do dějin žádným významným činem a jeho život nebyl natolik pestrý nebo dramatický, aby upoutával pozornost. Na jeho smrti nebylo nic zvláštního, není ani známo přesné datum jeho úmrtí ani místo, kde je pochován. Svým způsobem života se výrazně neodlišoval od svých současníků ze stejného prostředí a společenské vrstvy. Na rozdíl od nich si však v průběhu čtvrt století vedl záznamy o soudobých událostech i osudech vlastní rodiny. Jeho Paměti tak rozšířily řadu osobních svědectví z pobělohorských Čech. Navíc se záhy, po odchodu autora za hranice, staly jednou z nečetných dobových reflexí a výpovědí z pera českých exulantů. Jan Jiří Harant má pro české historiky raného novověku význam také jako autor krátkého spisku o životě Kryštofa Haranta. Ačkoliv je toto několikastránkové dílko, zamýšlené Janem Jiřím jako úvod k jeho překladu bratrova cestopisu do němčiny, nesouvislé a útržkovité, obsahuje několik pozoruhodných informací o Kryštofu Harantovi. l Vztahují se převážně k jeho působení na dvoře Rudolfa II. a některé z nich jsou spíše anekdotické povahy.

Jan Jiří Harant from Polžic a Bezdružic, the Czech nobleman and refugee

Důsledky stavovského povstání a jeho porážky zasáhly výrazně do osudů nesčetných českých jednotlivců i celých rodin. Kromě všech, kteří se nějakých způsobem na povstání podíleli, byli nakonec postiženi i ti evangelíci, kteří na něm neměli žádnou účast. Rekatolizační opatření vrcholící mandátem o obnově jednotného náboženského vyznání v Čechách z roku 1627 postavila veškeré nekatolíky z řad svobodného obyvatelstva před nelehkou volbu, zda přestoupit ke katolickému vyznání nebo odejít ze země. Většina dala přednost pobytu v domácím prostředí, přesto odešlo ze země poměrně velké množství lidí. Mezi nimi se vyskytovala celá řada pozoruhodných osobností. Některé z nich se svými činy skutečně zapsaly do českých i evropských dějin a těší se značnému zájmu jak historiků, tak i široké veřejnosti. Největší část emigrantů však nebyla za svého života v Čechách příliš známa; žili celkem běžným životem v rámci svého společenského postavení až do stavovského povstání. Po odchodu za hranice pokračovali ve své skromné a nenápadné životní dráze. Jen málo z nich se nějakým způsobem vydělilo z nepřeberného množství neznámých a zapomenutých vystěhovalců.
