Kavánková, Lucie ; Malý, Lubomír (advisor) ; Malý, Lubomír (advisor) ; Pěruška, Jan (referee) ; Tomášek, Jiří (referee)
My thesis embraces the life and works of the English composer and violist Rebecca Clarke, her three Sonatas for viola and piano, and three interpretations of these compositions. Rebecca Clarke ( 1886 - 1979) is recognised as one of the most important English composers from the era between World Wars. She wrote almost 100 works, most of which are songs and light vocal or instrumental works. Among her more consequential works are her three Sonatas for viola and piano, which she conposed in 1919, and her Piano Trio, which was written a year later. She wrote in a late Romantic/Impressionistic style, and was ispired by Neoclassism, French Impressionism, and English, Scotish and Irih folklore.I will dwell on the many compositional devices employed by Rebecca Clarke, including form and structure, motivi . ec analysis, use of dynamics and many more. The following chapters deal with three interpretations of the Sonatas for Viola nad Piano. The first was recorded in 1979 by violist Josef Koďousek and pianist Květa Novotná. The second recording was made in 1999 with violist Vladimír Bukač and pianist Jaromír Klepáč, and the third recording, with violist Alexander Besa and Jiřina Kolmanová was released in 1997. I will contrast and compare the tree interpretations and explore the lives of each individual artist. The last chapter contains five appendiges, which offer further insight into the life and works Rebecca Clarke and Josef Kodóusek. The appendiges are extensive- an overview of the compositions, their origins, and the circumstances surrounding them, details about first performances, photographs and an orchestration of the piano in the Sonatas.
