Part two will talk about the formal aspects of their photographs, e.g. the character of lighting, structure of the picture. Finally the last chapter will explore the meaning and the subject-matter of their attitudes, specifically translating their photographic language in the relationship to painting, photography and cinematography.
Sites and Sights. Displacement in the Era of Visual Turn
Bagdasarova, Jaroslava ; Petráň, Tomáš (advisor) ; Czumalo, Vladimír (referee)
The study deals with the experience of displacement. It treats the subject through the photographic codes of Chukchi migrants and tourists who have one way or another transcended rather notional boundaries of cultural configurations. Methodologically, the study combines visual anthropology, phenomenology of body and space, and surrealist approach to reality. Visuality is not seen as a mere tool of anthropological knowledge but a disposition for new epistemology. The study reveals the interrelation between the transformation of Chukchi from tourists to migrants while gradually integrating themselves in a culturally new milieu of Saint Petersburg, and their way of seeing. It is then also the character of their snapshots which changes: photography of remarkable is replaced by the photography of observed and later on by the photography of an observer.
Icons on the Surface
Hrdinová, Veronika ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Kopal, Petr (advisor) ; Dufek, Jiří (referee)
The bachelor thesis Icons on the Surface deals with the film representations of the human body in medieval culture. The main aim of the work is not only to illuminate how real life and real body in the Middle Ages compares with what we have seen in the movies, but also to analyze what the various attitudes towards this topic tell us about comtemporary cinematography and culture. In addition to several particular film analyses working as a case studies, the author examines the key role of body in the process of film narration and a relationship between the body of the film, the body behind the camera and the body of the viewer. The thesis also deals with the problem of capturing history on the movie screen and investigates the impulses that may lead filmmakers to bring the past to the life. The author sees film representation of medieval body as a challenge to filmmakers. In her point of view the medieval body is the body filled with unique symbolic meanings, oscillating in existential amplitudes. Thus, in the film represetations of this body, the artist may invite their audience to experience images on the screen in their basic aesthetic and symbolic qualities.

A connection of similarity with analogy, sylogism, mimesis and association is also pursued. The second part, which represents the core of the paper, selectively explores similarity as a stylistic and semanticising means in contemporary photography. Apart from other aspects, diptych and series in photography are discussed in greater detail.

Statesmans portrait developement
Bouška, Ondřej ; Czumalo, Vladimír (advisor) ; Silverio, Robert (referee)
The way of portraying statesmen, that we got intimately acquainted with throughout the 20th century, must be seen in connection with the genre artists have been concerned with since the beginnings of the figurative art. The main topic of this study is the chronological development within which the preceding periods have impact on the following periods. The thesis also reveals significant parallels in the area of formal part of statesmen's and rulers' imaging and the way deities, gods and the God are imaged, i.e. the highest divine authorities, supposing the similarities between these genres are not random. Requisites for portraying leaders of empires and states resulted in defining almost a unified style of such portrayals, which was broken and significantly changed only by the emergence of photography. The new aesthetics and typology of photography imaging brings about new ways of portraying statesmen at the beginning of the 20th century, which are nevertheless influenced by tradition and which thus take the tradition into account.
