Czech-Polish false friends and their use in teaching Czech as a Foreign Language
Pohorská, Iva ; Bozděchová, Ivana (advisor) ; Mareš, Petr (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on the so called "false friends" in contemporary Czech and Polish. Both languages are first introduced in the context of their linguistic and typological features as relevant to the subject of the thesis. Particular attention is paid to the differences between the two languages, and therefore possible language interferences. Furthermore, the paper discusses the issue of so called "false friends" and, based on the studies of E. Lotko, there were selected four types of false friends (grammatical (according to the grammatical gender of the noun), lexicographical, stylistic and valency false friends) and discussed more. Those lexical units are first characterized in general terms, and are then focused on the apecific "false friends" contained in the Common European Framework of Reference (levels A1-B1 for Czech as a foreign language). The second part of the thesis (based on the acquired theoretical knowledge) tries to design and recommend a methodology for working with so called "false friends" in the teaching of Czech as a foreign language to the target group of native Polish speakers. This includes worksheets for students as well as the methodology for teachers. Key words False friends, Interlanguage homonymity, Czech language, Polish language, Common European Framework of...
The competition of different syntactic devices expressing the semantic relation of comparison (based on the Czech-German material)
Pečený, Pavel ; Hošnová, Eva (advisor) ; Mareš, Petr (referee)
The thesis focuses specially on characterisation of the competition of syntactic devices used to express comparison in Czech. The research targets primarily the use of connecting expressions and certain case relations. The aim is to ascertain the tendencies manifesting in the distribution of the competition devices, which is also connected with syntactic, semantic or another factors, they may influence the distribution. The material basis for this analysis is based on the data from the parallel Czech-German corpus "InterCorp" and chosen corpuses of the "Czech National Corpus" (ČNK). The research found that the competition of the syntactic devices expressing comparison happens most often in a frame of one semantic type of comparison, i.e. in a frame of comparison based on unity and similarity on the one hand, and a frame of comparison based on difference on the other hand. Fundamental role in choosing of the competition devices is played by the semantic view-point. It is supplemented by a formal view-point on the syntactic level. The case relations and the preposition groups may link only comparison on the level of parts of a sentence, connection devices may do so on the level of complex sentences as well. The competition is partly influenced by the stylistic factors and the nature of text.

Orality in Dialogic Computer-Mediated Communication
Laubeová, Zuzana ; Mareš, Petr (advisor) ; Jandová, Eva (referee) ; Janovec, Ladislav (referee)
The subject of this thesis is orality in informal dialogic computer-mediated communication (henceforth CMC). This type of communication is represented by internet discussions, discussion fora, and Facebook posts. All these three genres are compared with informal spoken face-to-face dialogues. The data are covered by the Koditex corpus, which contains the CMC genres, and the Ortofon corpus of spoken language. The term orality can refer both to the realized communication form - spoken or written (so- called media orality) and to the summary of linguistic characteristics associated with the prototypical informal spoken dialogue (so-called conceptual orality). This thesis focuses only on conceptual orality, which is based on nine language features divided into the three following areas: dialogicity, spontaneity, and fulfilment of pragmatic needs of communication participants. The analyses show significant similarity between the functional use of features in both spoken and written communication. This applies primarily to the features associated with spontaneity (repetition of the same words, the presence of word fragments, typos and misspellings) and the fulfilment of pragmatic needs (discourse markers, pronoun non-dropping, iteration of graphemes). It follows that the selected CMC genres appropriately...
