The competition of different syntactic devices expressing the semantic relation of comparison (based on the Czech-German material)
Pečený, Pavel ; Hošnová, Eva (advisor) ; Mareš, Petr (referee)
The thesis focuses specially on characterisation of the competition of syntactic devices used to express comparison in Czech. The research targets primarily the use of connecting expressions and certain case relations. The aim is to ascertain the tendencies manifesting in the distribution of the competition devices, which is also connected with syntactic, semantic or another factors, they may influence the distribution. The material basis for this analysis is based on the data from the parallel Czech-German corpus "InterCorp" and chosen corpuses of the "Czech National Corpus" (ČNK). The research found that the competition of the syntactic devices expressing comparison happens most often in a frame of one semantic type of comparison, i.e. in a frame of comparison based on unity and similarity on the one hand, and a frame of comparison based on difference on the other hand. Fundamental role in choosing of the competition devices is played by the semantic view-point. It is supplemented by a formal view-point on the syntactic level. The case relations and the preposition groups may link only comparison on the level of parts of a sentence, connection devices may do so on the level of complex sentences as well. The competition is partly influenced by the stylistic factors and the nature of text.

Mareš, Petr
Consistent recording of data on Land Use makes it possible to carry out a detailed analysis of a landscape development in the Czech ladns over the last 160 years. Since the 1970s there have been Land Use studies using these records but they usualy foccused on statistical data processing for whole cadastre areas. This dissertation thesis deals with the Land Use development of cadastres Teletin and Trebsin between the years 1840 and 1999, using the Arc View detscop GIS computer program. Its aim is to identify all the changes in the Land Use and drawing on knowledge of general trends in the landscape and society development to explain and comment on these changes. The comparison of the results of this study (map analysis GIS) with the recorded data (statistics Land Use date for individual cadastres) creates also on important part of the dissertation. Maps from the year 1840 and my own field map works Lad Use in the 1999 are used for the analysis. In order to illustrate development of several indicators between the two time horizons same aerial photographs from 1953 are used. Different types of land are...

Orality in Dialogic Computer-Mediated Communication
Laubeová, Zuzana ; Mareš, Petr (advisor) ; Jandová, Eva (referee) ; Janovec, Ladislav (referee)
The subject of this thesis is orality in informal dialogic computer-mediated communication (henceforth CMC). This type of communication is represented by internet discussions, discussion fora, and Facebook posts. All these three genres are compared with informal spoken face-to-face dialogues. The data are covered by the Koditex corpus, which contains the CMC genres, and the Ortofon corpus of spoken language. The term orality can refer both to the realized communication form - spoken or written (so- called media orality) and to the summary of linguistic characteristics associated with the prototypical informal spoken dialogue (so-called conceptual orality). This thesis focuses only on conceptual orality, which is based on nine language features divided into the three following areas: dialogicity, spontaneity, and fulfilment of pragmatic needs of communication participants. The analyses show significant similarity between the functional use of features in both spoken and written communication. This applies primarily to the features associated with spontaneity (repetition of the same words, the presence of word fragments, typos and misspellings) and the fulfilment of pragmatic needs (discourse markers, pronoun non-dropping, iteration of graphemes). It follows that the selected CMC genres appropriately...

Critical Discourse Analysis of the Discourse on the Bohemian Forest National Park
Hořejší, Michal ; Mareš, Petr (advisor) ; Chovanec, Jan (referee) ; Svobodová, Jindřiška (referee)
This thesis focuses on critical analysis of the discourse on the Bohemian Forest National Park (BFNP) between 1991 and 2010. This large-size protected area has over the long term been the subject of highly critical debate among various participants including top political representatives, particularly as a result of several cases of massive disturbances of mature forest stands. Hence this discussion offers some very suitable material for an analysis aiming to help expose the links between regional subjects and general politics - and to demonstrate the relations between language and power. The introductory two chapters presenting the subject and a clarification of the position from which my critical analysis is to be performed is followed by a section describing the basic procedures and concepts defining the theoretical and methodological framework of the critical discourse analysis (CDA). This third chapter deals with the mutual relations between the initial CDA qualitative approach and the quantitative corpus approach, particularly in view of the issues surrounding the replicability of critical research. However, it also presents such key terms as discourse, critique, ideology, identity and intertextuality/interdiscursivity. The fourth chapter forms the analytical core of the work - made up of two...
