Osvobozené divadlo: between lyricism and engagement

The presented bachelor thesis focuses on the transformation of the distinctive poetics of Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich in the Osvobozené divadlo from 1930 to 1936. The starting point for this work is hypothesis of two different creative stages - the first with the dominating elements of apolitical lyricism and the second with the prevailing political and social engagement. The work builds on the analysis and comparison of selected dramatic texts that serve as representative sample of their creation (from the first period Ostrov Dynamit, Sever proti Jihu, Don Juan a comp. and Golem, and from the second period Caesar, Osel a stín, Balada z hadrů and Rub a líc). Based on analysis of dramatic texts by defined subcategories (composition, characters, space-time, anti-illusion devices, scary and violent scenes, expression of engagement in song production and types of engagement), the aim is to define whether the underlying hypothesis appears to be functional and whether enough relevant arguments can be found in the production of Voskovec and Werich. Metamorphoses of the Author's Style in Miroslav Holub's Poetry

The bachelor's thesis explores the changes of the author's style in the poetic work of Miroslav Holub. The theoretical part is based mainly on the study of secondary literature, the practical part mainly on the interpretive analysis of individual poems from different periods. Holub is most often associated with the poetry of the everyday, but we are trying to give more comprehensive view of his entire work; especially not forgetting the poetry collections from the seventies to the nineties, from which we draw attention to the metaphor of the theatrum mundi, with which Holub worked in several collections and which is just seldom associated with his poetry. Among the features connecting all of Holub's poetic works, we emphasize the specific projection of the author's second profession as a scientist into his poems, which is characterized, for example, by specific themes and space-time, the use of a specific lexicon, but surprisingly also a special arrangement of verses. We refer to words of Bohumil Svozil who calls those features as intellectual poetry, but at the same time we argue with the opinions of some literary critics claiming that Holub's work is impersonal and devoid of emotions due to its intellectuality. The bachelor thesis is focused on comedies of František Ferdinand Šamberk, which he wrote between 60's and 80's of the 19th century. First chapters are focused on personality of F. F. Šamberk, historical context and function of theaters in our country during his lifetime. The main topic of this thesis is analysis and comparation of three spectator successful and spectator less successful drama. Comparation of Šrámek and Hrubín lyrics drama

The thesis focuses on comparison of the Šrámek's and Hrubín's lyrics drama. Its goal is to describe how much different this type of drama of compared authors is. Common and different approaches of these authors are deduced on the basis of selected characteristic features and key motives (motive of love, motives on the edge of fairy tales and myths, motive of death and the end, motive of writer), the role of nature, the role of music and some other components. The thesis builds on analysis and subsequent comparison of six original texts - on Šrámek's Červen (1905), Léto (1915), Měsíc nad řekou (1922), Plačící satyr (1923) and on Hrubín's Srpnová neděle (1958) and Křišťálová noc (1961). Another aim of this thesis is to confirm or refute the hypothesis that between the dramas Léto and Srpnová neděle exists the strongest mutual parallelism. The main source of information about lives of both authors are books written by František Buriánek and Iva Málková. Resisting Temptation:Mephistophelian seduction in Czech Theatrical Drama of the 1970's and 1980's

This master thesis deals with the topic of temptation in three Czech Theatrical Dramas of the 1970's and 1980's, inspired by the legend of Faust. These dramatic works represent different model approaches of dealing with such a topic. Thesis focuses on the principle of evil and its functioning. The temptation by Devil is therefore defined as Mephistophelian seduction, which occurs in drama plays selected as a subject of this thesis. The thesis analyzes and describes Mephistophelian seduction and its realization in theatrical dramas. Thesis elaborates the mechanism of evil principle and examines how the main protagonists are influenced in their acting and behaviour by this power. This thesis brings the power of evil into the wider context of "higher power" and describes relations between the power of evil and totalitarian power. On this base the historical and political context of the lives of the authors is considered as an important element. Based on comparison of all these aspects the principle of Mephistophelian seduction is reflected within its existential dimension. Theatre Slapstick of Emil Artur Longen

In this thesis I dealt with commonly accepted theory, that Czech author Emil Arthur Longen wrote his plays in style similar to film slapstick comedy. The work starts with biography of Emil Arthur Longen. He was born in 1885 and died in 1936, his life was filled with many rises and falls because of his short temper, alcoholism and turbulent relation with his first wife, Polyxena (commonly called Xena), also an actress. Longen started as a student of Arts in Prague, but never ended his studies and left to pursue his interest, first in painting, later in another fields like filmmaking and acting, but he is most known as a playwright. He wrote more than seventy dramatic pieces and adapted another hundred more for his own theatre and also for other houses he worked with. His first efforts were cabaret shorts, he also wrote more serious things, but his most succesfull plays are farces one to four acts long. He was a principal playwright who wrote plays for the theater of Vlasta Burian, nicknamed The King of Comedians in interwar Czechoslovakia, who excelled in many of them. Crazy Comedy of Antonín Procházka

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of crazy comedy of the contemporary creator of the author type of productions, Antonín Procházka. The inclusion of the author amongst creators of the author-type productions defines Procházka as the author who writes, directs and plays in his theatre plays. The aim of the diploma thesis is to analyze the comedies of the author from the point of view of the construction of the crazy comedy and in terms of how to build comic situations and work with humor. I try to find out if there are features and procedures that are typical of his plays and how his plays respect and use the rules of the genre of crazy comedy. Diploma thesis also includes work with specialist literature and an analysis of available professional reviews and period reviews. In the beginning, I present aims and structure this diploma thesis. In the first part of the thesis I briefly describe the life of the author, and in more detail, I deal with the inspiration and the facts that influenced the author's work. Treatise on the crazy comedy complements this thesis because of a comprehensive view of the issue.
