Comparison of Italian text and Czech translation of Věčný pekelný žalář
Jasanská, Zuzana ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Flemrová, Alice (referee)
The task of this diploma thesis is to confront the writing La prigione eterna dell'Inferno that was written by Giovanni Battista Manni with its Czech translation that was made by Václav Matěj Šteyer. This piece of writing, La prigione, was published in 1666 and the Šteyer's work in 1676. The writer Šteyer translated the text directly from the Italian one according to the fourth publication of Manni's master copy from the year 1669 because Manni changed there some passages in last two chapters and these changes are seen in the Czech version too. Neither Manni's writing was not original. He was inspired by a tract that was written by the Spanish Jesuit, Juan Eusebio Nieremberg. I observed the way how Šteyer proceeded in the translation of Manni's master copy, especially in the field of lexicon, syntax and stylistics. I also concerned how the rhetoric of Jesuit schools is presented by both authors.
The image of the Camorra in contemporary Neapolitan prose
Šenkýřová, Barbora ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee)
The image of the Camorra in contemporary Neapolitan prose The Camorra or "the System", as lots of residents of Naples call it, is a criminal organization that has intensified its activities since the 1980s and today it affects all aspects of lives of people living in Campania. This thesis focuses on the impact of the Camorra on lives and work of contemporary Neapolitan writers, or more precisely, it describes the way the theme of the Neapolitan mafia is represented in their books. The authors of the analyzed texts are Peppe Lanzetta, Giuseppe Ferrandino, Andrej Longo, Giuseppe Montesano, Simone Di Meo, Roberto Saviano and Valeria Parrella. For the purpose of this thesis, we have chosen the works that are interesting in terms of genre adaptation of the topic and in terms of the characteristics of the main characters of each story. Following the behaviour of the main characters, we observe the direct impact of the Camorra on life in Naples and its influence on the mentality of its inhabitants. We aim to define the conditions under which the people ruled by the Camorra are forced to live and at the same time, we analyze how they face up to this destiny: whether they persist and hope for change or resign and leave their hometown to try their luck elsewhere, mostly in northern Italy. Addressing each...
The mosaic and the fragment. Threee examples of the Italian postmodern novel
Štichauerová, Olga ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee)
The presented thesis tries to show the main characteristics of the postmodern poetics presenting three examples of Italian novels of the last third of the twentieth century. All of these pieces work with the motive of the fragmentarity, disharmony and the mosaic in the different basic elements of the text: the character, the space and the story as a whole. The fragmentarity is considered as a sign of the postmodern art and literature that is based on the breakdown of unity, on plurality in contrary to the peroid of modernism. The introduction briefly presents different theoretical approaches to the question of postmodernism, especially the concept of Wolfgang Welsch and Italian semiotics. Three main chapters are focused on the motive of the fragmented figure (in the novel Notturno indiano by Antonio Tabucchi), the motive of space (in Alessandro Baricco's City) and the story (Italo Calvino and his Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore). In the end of the thesis there are found parallels in these three texts in the narrative procedures and similar motives which are also characteristic for the postmodernism.
Dualistic vision of the world in prosaic works by members of Scapigliatura movement
Pletichová, Markéta ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee)
Abstrac After the long period of Risorgimento and several attempts of unification of Italy, the expectations of the Italian nation finally materialized when the Italian state was solemnly declared on 4th March 1861. However the territories of Veneto and Rome were annexed only several years later, even though not in such a heroic way as the Italians hoped for. Despite the great effort of Garibaldi the final unification took place only after the French loss in Prussian-French war of 1870, which was difficult to bear for the pride of Italians. Another disappointment was the organization and functioning of the new state, which didn"t work smoothly. In some cities the artistic circles started to build groups of dissatisfied intellectuals, one of these groups was the "milanese scapigliatura ", which reached it"s heyday between 1860- 1880. Their poetics, or the way of their artistic expression, was closely related to their humor. They lead a dubious way of life, trying to escape the reality through the drugs and alcohol. They were strongly influenced by the romanticism and the positivists. They aimed to show the truth in their works. They refused the traditional, stereotypical literary form and were trying to reach stylistic and linguistic progress. Among the main protagonists were Camillo Boito (1836-1914),...
The Italian historical novel between 1827 and 1840
Löwensteinová, Klára ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Hrbata, Zdeněk (referee) ; Obstová, Zora (referee)
The doctoral thesis deals with the genre of an Italian historical novel between 1827 and 1840, tracks its evolution, constants, and ideological tendencies. The analyses of seven texts - chosen according some criteria, stipulating that the works always had to be the first historical novel of each author, they had to represent the advance of genre properly, and at the same time, had to be interesting literary types - focus on the genre of significant structural elements, i.e. they study the period of stories, plots, spatiotemporal relations, characters, narrators in relation to the readers and to the sources, proportion of fiction and history, historicism and ahistoricism, and paratext. The results of research bring surprisingly standardized repertoire of historical novels of the studied period. Single aspects - e.g. the critical choice of period, the preponderance of antagonists over protagonists, the tragic end of heroes, the viewpoint of narrators, historical parallels, create a clear anti-model of the modern, sovereign, and nascent Italian state.
Violence in the Italian narrative literature of the 1990s
Lergetporer, Helena ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee) ; Špička, Jiří (referee)
In the italian narrative of the 1990s violence appears frequently as echo of an intemational current, but also in form of a specific national trend. At the beginning of the decade the political and social situation in Italy had changed due to the fall of communism in Eastem Europe, the Tangentopoli corruption scandal, the fall of the First Republic and terrific conf1icts between the italian state and mafia. In addition we have to consider the culminating globalisation, technology and consumer process. All this strongly inf1uenced the actual violence perception in the period of the 1990s, which ends in our point of view with the terror attacks on the USA in 2001.
Americana. American myth in the Italian interwar literature
Kalinová, Alžběta ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee)
This thesis called "Americana. American Myth in the Italian Interwar Literature" describes and analyses the anthology of American literature Americana that was prepared in 1940 by Italian writer and translator Elio Vittorini. It also focuses on the impact of fascist rhetoric and ideology on Italian interwar literature and official approach of fascist Italy to the USA. The initial part describes life and work of Elio Vittorini, mentioning also the influences that inspired him in his work and his motivations to compile the whole anthology. The next chapter of this part briefly presents other translators who contributed to Americana. The middle part of the thesis describes formation of the fascist regime in Italy and its impact on the Italian culture, focusing mainly on journalism and literature. It describes not only the creation of censorship itself but also paradoxes that went together. In the end of this part we can read about the struggle of Elio Vittorini and Bompiani Publishing House to publish Americana. The core of this thesis, however, is an analysis of both versions of Americana, the original version of Elio Vittorini as well as the censored version with the foreword by Emilio Cecchi. The beginning of this part outlines the birth of the American myth in Italian literature itself and then the...
Carlo Sgorlon
Mathé, Lukáš ; Flemrová, Alice (referee) ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor)
In the introduction to this work, which is dedicated to the contemporary Italian author Carlo Sgorlon, I have attempted to define the main purposes of the thesis. The central aim of the work is to introduce the author to Czech readers and to name the main themes of his novels. Sgorlon has been included in the group of regionalist authors in the context of Italian literature; consequently, the issue of regionalism in literature and its relevance for the further course of the work is discussed.
Leo Spitzer: stylistic studies from Romance literatures
Giacomo Leopardi, romantic poet?
Hrdličková, Anna ; Pelán, Jiří (referee) ; Flemrová, Alice (advisor)
The diploma thesis "Giacomo Leopardi, Romantic poet?" addresses this author's poetics from the point of view of its relation to Romantic poetics. The subject of this research is limited in so doing to lyrical poems contained in Canti. However, his literature critics related to Romanticism are taken in consideration as well. The thesis text consists of two main parts. The first part is dedicated to Romanticism characteristics and it's specifics in various national literatures. It concentrates mainly on reception and response of Italian literary sphere to Romanticism as well as on the attitude that Giacomo Leopardi assumed towards it. The second part is then dedicated to the analysis of the poems texts itself; to their form, content and idea.
