Jews in Frýdek and Místek Region. Jewish community and its creators.
Baránek, Daniel ; Hlavačka, Milan (advisor) ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (referee)
This thesis is concerned with the process of founding, development, decline and destruction of the Jewish community in the Region of Frýdek and Místek. This community represents one of the Jewish communities in Moravia and Silesia being evolved due to the emancipation of the Jews. In comparison with the majority of the existing treatises on the Moravian and Silesian "emancipatory" Jewish communities, this thesis focuses not only on external phenomenons (the number and socio-economic status of the Jews, the construction of religious buildings), but also and mainly pays attention to the Jewish community itself, to its internal evolution and limits, different concepts of its development, to religious and later also to national identity of the members of the Frýdek-Místek Jewish community. The thesis also traces the limits of the integration of the Jews into the surrounding society, as well as the territorial specifics result- ing from the fact that this Jewish community was located in the Moravian-Silesian border. 1
Jan Boris Spacek 1888-1967. Native of Stepanov in Russia, Bulgaria and the Near East
Turkovič, Alexander ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (advisor) ; Randák, Jan (referee)
This bachelor work concentrates on the life, work, and political activities of Stepanov native Jan Spacek, who was a permanent revolutionary, rebel and crusader for dreams and ideals. This is a probe into the life of a man, who did not enter history as a grand personality of policy or warfare, but who in some ways influenced the great events of his time and was simultaneously transformed by them. The author trys to reveal his reasons for a positive attitude to revolution and half-hearted approach to his family. With the aid of many archived documents, the reasons for his thirty three years in Russia, Bulgaria and the Near East, and his real or ostensible intelligence activity for the Soviet Union, are investigated. Thanks to the collation of many archive sources (both personal and official) there are many different recollections by the people around him. These views differ by their relationship to him or ulterior motives.
Reception of darwinism in Bohemia between 1859 and 1918
Tomsová, Julie ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (referee) ; Klusáková, Luďa (advisor)
In this B.A. thesis I focus closer on the conditions of the reception of Darwinism in Bohemia in the period between 1859 and 1918. My research deals with the basic mapping and evaluation of the process of acceptance of Darwinism in Czech society, both in public discourse and in more specialized discourse of academic society and in the field of theology. In terms of the professional and scientific discourse I examine the questions of when, through which channels, and in what forms the works of Charles Darwin got into Czech general public; and how people accepted and reflected them. I also examine the responses on Darwin's theories which appeared in contemporary press and literature. I assumed that attitude of particular social groups toward Darwin and his theory was different. Distinct viewpoints took naturalists and scientists and public administration and the Catholic Church. And somewhere between these two different viewpoints occurred the general public. In the thesis I have analysed the process of the reception of Darwinism in Bohemia in the mentioned period and arrived to conclusions that this process did not take place accordingly in all three monitored discourses - public, academic and theological. The ambivalence between mainly positive reception of academic society and negative reaction of the...

Malá, Marie ; Kvaček, Robert (advisor) ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (referee)
The proposed diploma thesis focuses on the poorly explored theme of the women participation among university intelligentsia in the Czech Lands in the first half of the 20th century. The chosen theme is analyzed from the point of view of women's academic clubs, which have appeared in this region already at the beginning of 20th century. In addition to their representative function they have also fulfilled the mission of peculiar cultural and social agents of their age. Concurrently with the exploration of history, this thesis follows the significance and the structure of three forms of organized women academicians' movement, the prospective 5 personal and ideological continuity in the women academic society, which concentrated in the 'Ženský kroužek Slavia', in the Sdružení akademicky vzdělaných žen, and between the two world wars in the 'Sdružení vysokoškolsky vzdělaných žen v R. Č. S. For the purpose of encompassing a broader context, within which the mentioned fellowships have pursued their activities, the thesis also partly mentions the general evolution of the possibility of women's academic education, and also the dimension of sociability of women intelligentsia, which became expressed in the International Federation of Women - a prestigious organization, in which female academicians from more than 30...
Czechs at world's fairs
Ulmanová, Kristýna ; Hlavačka, Milan (advisor) ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (referee)
In the introduction, the thesis author provides a typology of Czech travelers who visited one of the world exhibitions in the second half of the nineteenth century. Then the work focuses this typology on two types of travelers, namely the type of traveler-tourist and the type of traveler-scholar. The type of traveler-tourists is first defined by the contemporary understanding of the concept of "tourist." Then the conditions in which Czech tourists traveled to the World's Fairs are described, where they were housed and how they ate. Subsequently, the author analyzes the reasons why the Czech traveler-tourist traveled to the exhibition, what were his expectations, and whether those expectations were realistic. The work also captures the emerging phenomenon of mass trips abroad. Part of the work also deals with cultural stereotypes and self-reflection of Czech tourists, provoked by contact with other countries and their inhabitants. The traveler-scholar is characterized by comparison with the traveler-tourist. Furthermore, the author pays attention to international congresses, which were an integral part of the World's Fairs and in which the traveler-scholar often participated. The example of Unity of the Encouragement of Industry in Bohemia shows how the representatives of Czech organizations were sent to the...
