Grauová, Šárka ; Housková, Anna (advisor) ; Svatoň, Vladimír (referee) ; Pelán, Jiří (referee)
The thesis is based on the translation of a seminal work by George Steiner After Babel (1975), published in Triáda Publishing in 2010. The study presented in this volume is divided into three parts: the first one sketches a general portrait of George Steiner as a literary and cultural critic, language philosopher and a Jewish thinker much of his thought is dedicated to the Shoah. The second part traces Steiners intellectual profile with regards to his life story. The third part introduces Steiner's poetics and ethics of translation, paying attention especially to the phenomenon of translation in the colonial and postcolonial world. It maps the succession of metaphorical images Steiner uses to pinpoint translation and interpretation in general, especially the metafor of war and of hospitality. It concludes that a metaphorical use of the term "translation" for the whole field of understanding, interpretation and cultural tradition is not of much help in our apprehension of what translation proper is.

This thesis aims to introduce the Italian writer Italo Svevo and his three key novels: Una vita (A Life), Senilità (As a man grows older) and La coscienza di Zeno (Zeno's Conscience). At the beginning I briefly summarize the history of multicultural Trieste, which had considerable influence on the author and which is the setting of the three novels. The bio- bibliographical section will chronologically portray Svevo's personal and professional life and his literary and dramatic works. The connecting point of his works is "inettitudine", or indifference, ineptitude and passivity of the main characters lives. Further, one of Svevo's topics handled repeatedly is the family, relations between its individual members, love and rivalry. The work focuses on Svevo's novels. Finally, I try to compare all three works, to find differences between them and summarize the overall continuity and transformation of Svevo's heroes.
Boccacccio's Pastorals
Lukášová, Denisa ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Flemrová, Alice (referee)
The objective of this bachelor thesis "Boccaccio's Pastorals" is to introduce two works of an Italian writer from Renaissance, Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), which are from one point of view similar, but from the other one are mostly distinct. The first book, Commedia delle ninfe fiorentine, was written between 1341-42 during an author's sojourn in Florence, the second, Ninfale fiesolano, between 1344-46. Both works are linked with pastoral themes, as it is evident from the title of this thesis, and then with some mythological elements. This is explained in the first part of the thesis, where we mainly concentrate on Boccaccio's live and his writings and then on three ancient authors that influenced him so much, that they became a source of inspiration for his own works. In the sphere of pastoral topic it refers to Theocritus, who in his idylls presented scenes from shepherd's lives, their vocal disputes and beauty of nature. Secondly it refers to Virgil, who, in the collected poems Eclogues, followed the Greek predecessor and enriched his own poems with hidden allegory. Boccaccio derived the mythological elements from Ovid and his Metamorphoses. Especially in Ninfale fiesolano we can find a lot of references or rephrasings to single parts of this latin work. From the analysis we discover, that...

Tato diplomová práce zmapuje románovou tvorbu současného italského spisovatele Alessandra Baricca. Úvodem bude představen autor v kontextu současné italské prózy. V další části práce nastíníme charakteristiku postmoderního románu, zejména pokud jde o tříštění či dekompozici prostoru, času, příběhu a s tím související žánrovou heterogennost textu.
