Laws of nature and humankind in rural stories of Vítězslav Hálek
Černá, Barbora ; Stejskalová, Anna (advisor) ; Pechová, Drahoslava (referee)
The thesis deals with literary production of Vítězslav Hálek - namely his rural short stories. I have tried to observe evolution of both the writer and his work in two creative periods of his life: 1857 - 1863 and 1871 - 1874. I am focusing on comparison of the stories written in two productive stages of Vítězslav Hálek, searching for both common features and the differences. I pay special attention to images of natural scenery, their function in the storyline and the importance of nature in human life. In Halek's approach, nature is ruled by essential laws which should be abided and respected by people. Therefore the main part of my thesis is concerned with individual images of nature laws and their comparison with the laws applicable in human society. AdditionalIy, I take account of Halek's career as well as his literary production, which has been listed in the record. Hálek read well in all his life, he was considered popular and recognised author, however, some of his stories are hard to find these days. There do not even exist contemporary belles-lettres on Vítězslav Hálek. My study is based primarily on Halek's correspondence, small biographic essays and, lastly, on analysis of narrative texts. In the last chapture I derive from selected texts of secondary-school-anthologies.

Region of the visionary. Spiritism from the region under the Krkonoše mountains in Czech literature
Literary tradition and the contemporary region of Benešov
Kartusová, Jitka ; Stejskalová, Anna (advisor) ; Hrabáková, Jaroslava (referee)
The rigorous work of "Literary Tradition and the Contemporary Region of Benešov" is trying to map the development of literature in this area from the Baroque period to the present. It also aims to define terms "region" and "regional" and is also looking for links and relationships between the socalled regional literature on one hand and nationwide literature on the other. Writing is based on findings from scientific literature as well as from belles-lettres and from valuable yet less used sources (e.g. urban memorial books, parish records and other archival materials). The work is documenting the rich literary life of the region and provides a comprehensive overview of the authors, whose efforts laid the foundation of local literary tradition. It also presents overview of authors who with equal effort in their work continue successfully in developing the tradition. This composition deals with three authors more in depth. It regards Karel Nový, Vladislav Vančura and Jan Morávek. The selection of these three writers was not a random act. All of them entered the Czech literature in the interwar period and Benešov in their work has become indispensable and supporting element. Two of the authors were born in the county and permanently kept returning to this region which became a constant source of inspiration to...
František Langer as a prose-writer
Description of European cities in artistic works by Julius Zeyer
Mašková, Lucie ; Stejskalová, Anna (advisor) ; Hrabáková, Jaroslava (referee)
Julius Zeyer depicts European cities in his autobiographical work. He projects his impressions into perception of the main character. His descriptions are influenced by the journeys, which he undertook. The author attempts to capture the historical atmosphere in his novels, he shows the cities in the same way as he could see during his stay in the region. Although he is realistic about Rome and St Petersburg, he is subjective about Paris, which is depicted to be the city of fancy. Zeyer is trying to present a comprehensive picture of the place focusing mainly on art and architecture. Descriptions are very detailed and can often replace a tourist map. Author's trips to Europe were never easy, however many other personalities were inspired to see European cities by his vivid impressions from his journeys.

Prose Writer Václav Štech and Slaný
Jeschková, Lucie ; Stejskalová, Anna (advisor) ; Hrabáková, Jaroslava (referee)
RESUMÉ V ANGLICKÉM JAZYCE Slaný is a town not only with a long history, but also with rich cultural and social traditions. It has also become the birthplace, home town or temporary place of engagement for many eminent artists and writers of the Czech cultural scene. At present, the royal town of Slaný represents a natural administrative and social centre of its neighbourhood. Václav Štech, an outstanding teacher, writer, playwright and organizer, spent many years of his fecund life here. His tireless activity and enthusiasm have left a trace in the history of all Slaný societies in the last quarter of 19thcentury and the town of Slaný has to thank him for the opening of the municipal theatre and library, laying the foundations of the municipal museum and creating the tradition of the Slaný yearbook called Slánský obzor (Slaný Horizon). Štech celebrated his home town in his numerous literary works. As a beginning writer, he focused his attention to theatre; then he focused more on writing humorous short stories and bulky novels. In his novels he captured the life of a small town at the end of 19th century. Štech's humorous writings are typical for its sharp criticism of provincial conditions, ironic view and caricature of the main characters (small-town figures). The humour of his books is caustic, at times...
