School, the Foundation of Life – a Complex of Educational Buildings in Ostrava, Cerna louka
Knežníková, Zuzana ; Pechman, Tomáš (referee) ; Sochor, Jan (advisor)
The main idea of the project is the ambition to create an ageless school design, which is able to react flexibly to the constantly evolving educational system and changing space requirements. Philosophy is based on the principle of "open school". School as an important public building has a great potential to act as a catalyst within the neighbourhood. On one hand, it is open to the public by the means of shared facilities (library, gymnasium, multipurpose hall, art classrooms, language labs…). But on the other hand, openness is also important within the school itself. School can be understood as a small community. And because every community needs a public space as a platform for common activities, the school may have its own in the form of a central atrium. It acts as a "piazza", where numerous diverse activities are allowed to happen. Proposal for a school organization is based on the ability of social integration, which is gradually formulated throughout the childhood.

The newly created area complements a circular road. It creates an important boulevard which is surrounded by multifunctional houses, a park, and a metropolitan building. In the northern part there are two multifunctional objects. The southern part has a house of a metropolitan character. In between is a spacious park. The northern and southern parts are connected by a boulevard which evolves into the Main Station. The proposed multifunctional house is in a close distance from the municipality. The mass is divided into several parts. The highest part is placed towards the Benešova street. It gradually declines towards Koliště. This declivity does not create a barrier from the Koliště street. Important part are the common areas that create so called boxes. These boxes are two levels, always visible at the facade, one field wide and seven meters deep. They are made out of different material and include vertical green gardens. These serve as the relaxation zone for the employees. Façade is composed of highlighted horizontal strips which cover the ceiling construction and give the building its own character at the same time. Parterre encompasses commercial spaces. The rest of the storeys are designed as universal rentable spaces. Underneath the building is a garage and commercial spaces accessible from the Koliště street.

THE GARDEN IN A CRISIS The first problem. Moving the entrance from the rotunda axis in the north to the area where the farmyard surrounded by greenhouses is situated. The consequence of this step was destruction of the conception of a floral garden and further, confusion of a visitor caused by the new and excentric garden entrance. The second problem. The original noble fill of the forefield has been perfectly cleaned, including the structure. Therefore the courtyard of honour is wedged in the two huge unspecific areas. The third problem. The nineteenth century is gone. Nowadays visitor is hard to please and unconcentrated. THE CONCEPTION Revitalisation and amendment of the forefield structure concept in subareas is both practical and it offers the esthetic quality which was lost. In relation to the axis of the garden, the area is adversely divided by some new buildings. These functional stripes make the optical barriers and they are clear in their axis. There are minimaly two six smaller areas created out of two bigger ones. Moving the main entrance from the courtyard to the rotunda center line means a possibility for the garden to step out towards its future development without some drastic changes in a objects which are part of a monument conservation but not functionally defined any more. The more, the garden gets its lost axiality, sense and a story about men's journey again. The application of the principles of the baroque garden in filling of the forefield gardens is either wrong or not considered properly. Polarized (and polar) gardens offer extreme positions of two contradictory trends. A superframed garden made by the nowadays technology versus a grove of wisdom where the nature is both a constructor and an architect. All of this with a baroque garden somewhere in its centre.

The site of Benešova is located on the edge of the medieval city of Brno, where there are many important public buildings and park areas. The structure of existing buildings is mainly in compact blocks. The main goal of this project was to add some masses, which would be designed to follow surrounding buildings, and to designe park areas, that would copy the structure of parks in Brno's ring road. Project of the new polyfonctional building of administration and commercial areas is located on the north of the area and it is designed to meet its architectural expression of the importance of the place where is located.
