The media image of the parliamentary elections in Slovakia in 2023 in selected czech media
Libayová, Barbora ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
The political situation in Slovakia has undergone several significant changes since the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak in 2018. In a short period of time, there was the resignation of the long- time Prime Minister Robert Fico, the split of the Smer-SD party, the election of the former opposition government headed by Igor Matovič, which was marked not only by the pandemic and the beginning of the war in Ukraine, but also by chaos, until its fall and the establishment of the government of experts. This led Slovakia to early parliamentary elections in 2023, which to a large extent polarized society. This thesis is therefore devoted to the media image of these elections in four Czech media, idnes.cz, aktualne.cz, echo24.cz and denikn.cz, which reported on the event in considerable detail. It provides a detailed description of the political situation, changes in the party system and post-election events from the murder to the post-election period. Using a quantitative content analysis, it answers the questions of coverage and representation of political parties in the Czech media, where the Smer party was represented to up to 50 percent, and in a qualitative framing analysis it describes the most frequently occurring contexts in which the media reported on the topic, pointing out the frequent...
Media Coverage of The Green Deal for Europe During The Czech Presidency of The Council of The European Union
Němcová, Kateřina ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Charvát, Jakub (referee)
The aim of the thesis was to focus on the media coverage of the Green Deal for Europe during the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union in order to understand how the selected online media reported on the subject. Specifically, this thesis focused on the overall space devoted to the topic, the tone of the articles, the context in which the media placed the topic, how the topic was covered, whether the coverage of the topic was changing, and what sources of information the media used. The quantitative and subsequent qualitative analysis showed that the selected media framed the topic as a marginal one, mainly in a negative way. At the same time, however, the agenda of each media focused on other topics, primarily the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the energy crisis. However, even these topics were sometimes linked to the Green Deal for Europe.
Media Image of the so-called Opposition Agreement In Czech Media
Donát, Vojtěch ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the media image of the signing of the Agreement on the Creation of a Stable Political Environment in the Czech Republic, commonly referred to as the Opposition Agreement. This agreement arose after the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. Its main idea was that the Civic Democratic Party would enable the Czech Social Democratic Party to form a minority government. The first part of the thesis is dedicated to media theory, the issues of mass communication, and its influence on reality construction. The analytical part of the thesis first addresses the background of the adoption of the Opposition Agreement. It then examines how selected newspapers reported on the Opposition Agreement. These newspapers include Mladá fronta Dnes, Hospodářské noviny, Právo, and Blesk. These media outlets were chosen for their diversity in terms of readership and ownership structures. Quantitative content analysis methods are used to answer the research questions. The aim of the thesis is to capture the atmosphere directly associated with the signing of the Opposition Agreement, which took place on July 9, 1998. Within the content analysis, the thesis captures aspects of the signing of the Opposition Agreement emphasized in the articles and...
Media Coverage of the Major Candidates in the 2024 US Republican Primary Election
Jakšič, Marek ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Osvaldová, Barbora (referee)
The Media Portrayal of the Main Candidates in the 2024 US Republican Primary Election is a thesis that focuses on a detailed analysis of articles reporting on the candidates for the Republican nomination for the November US presidential election. Articles discussing the Republican Party candidates are examined during the analysis period from November 14, 2023, to January 14, 2024. Due to their high number, only the top five favourites in the primaries were included in the analysis. These candidates are Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Chris Christie. Three media outlets, or rather their news sites, were included in the analysis. The first is CNN.com, which represents the left-leaning media. The second chosen server is WSJ.com, which by contrast represents the center-oriented media, while the right-oriented media is represented by FOXNews.com. Although only three media outlets were deliberately included in the analysis, each of them occupies a different place on the right-wing political scale. Therefore, it can be assumed that the coverage of each candidate will differ at least slightly. The last condition that the articles had to meet in order to be included in the research was that the texts had to be related to the chosen topics. These nine topics were inflation,...
Media image of Jan Hamáček during two political events
Kubant, Vít ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
Jan Hamáček experienced two events in one year that led to his end in high politics. Firstly, at the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, during his tenure at the Ministry of the Interior, he positioned himself as a minister who, through his contacts in China, was able to secure sufficient amount of medical supplies. A year later, after the resolution of the involvement of Russian agents in the Vrbětice ammunition depot explosions, Seznam Zprávy published information that the ČSSD chairman wanted to exchange this finding for Russian Sputnik V coronavirus vaccines and a presidential summit in Prague. The thesis analysed how Hamáček's media image was portrayed in these situations and how it varied in four Czech newspapers.
Populism as a discursive strategy: an analysis of the communication of selected populist actors in the Czech political arena
Křovák, Jan ; Charvát, Jakub (advisor) ; Just, Petr (referee)
This paper analyses the concept of populism as a discursive strategy. Therefore, it uses the view of populist discourse as discussed by Ernesto Laclau and other authors in their works. The author analyses the communication practices of four selected Czech political actors on social networks (Facebook and Twitter) in the period before the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in October 2021. For the analysis, the author chose representatives who are commonly labelled as populists, i.e. former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, far-right populists, i.e. Tomio Okamura, and then two politicians representing mainstream parties - Markéta Pekarová Adamová from TOP 09 and Vít Rakušan from STAN. In the theoretical part, the author describes in depth the phenomenon of populism on the basis of expert literature, and in a comprehensive way points out the relationship between populism, social networks, media and political communication. In the practical part, the author conducted a so-called critical discursive analysis of posts of the politicians on the above-mentioned social media and then compared their dominant communication practices. The author then places the data and results of the research in context of the populist narrative described in the theoretical part of the thesis.
Perception of the "culture wars" concept in American media
Šimek, Jan ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Charvát, Jakub (referee)
American society is going through an era of deep social and political divisions. At the forefront of this deepening divide are the so-called culture wars, an umbrella term for a set of narratives around cultural and social issues that both sides of the conflict use to advance their political goals. This thesis aims to determine how much space culture wars themes occupy in the production of selected American media outlets, how these themes are projected onto their audiences and how this influences the audience's trust in the mainstream media. The first part of the thesis presents the methodology used in collecting and evaluating the data used in the research for this thesis. The theoretical section also defines concepts and terms related to the topic of the thesis. The practical part of the thesis will then focus on the evaluation of the data from the questionnaire survey conducted among American media consumers between May and June 2023.
Bipartisanship of US journalism on the example of media coverage of the 2022 midterm election
Strnad, David ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Charvát, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the relationship between American media and politics, particularly the partisan leaning of mainstream US media towards Republicans or Democrats. General media and political theories are introduced and then applied to a specific framework of the development of relationship between US media and political systems. It was necessary to include terms from political theory for completeness of the studied phenomenon which in itself is influenced by both media and politics. The thesis also draws on the hypothesis presented in Four Theories of the Press arguing that media reflect the social and therefore political system in which they operate. Hence, terms as media bias, agenda-setting or framing are accompanied by descriptions of a two-party system or the study of a general relationship between politics and the media. The thesis also offers overviews of the historical development of American politics and the media's relationship towards partisanship. The division of mainstream US media to two groups based on their appeal towards one of the parties is demonstrated not only by describing current analytical projects but also by own research. A quantitative content analysis with qualitative elements analyses and compares the thematic and genre representation of the online...
Media Image of Deputies in Czech Daily Press
Sůsa, Richard ; Just, Petr (advisor) ; Charvát, Jakub (referee)
1 Abstract Diploma thesis Media Image of Deputies in Czech Daily Press focuses on the identification of factors influencing the media image of certain Czech high-profile politicians. A three- year research period analyses the depiction of all members of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. Four Czech daily newspapers with the highest readership figures are chosen for the analysis, the sample is selected via the constructed weeks method. For clarity and to avoid the possible influence of strong media attention directed at the members of government, only the deputies who do not hold such executive office are included. The opening chapters provide an overview of a theoretical approach to political communication development and studies, as well as international research on politicians' media visibility. An extensive chapter depicts the establishment of an original Czech parliament-the Czech National Council-as well as its role in the establishment of the Czech Republic and the position of the Chamber of Deputies in the country's current political system set by the Constitution. As it holds a slight significance for the way politics is presented in the media, an overview of the electoral system and its main influential reforms is also included in this thesis. The...
The influence of the presenter's personality on a news podcast Vinohradská 12
Balcárková, Eliška ; Lovaš, Karol (advisor) ; Just, Petr (referee)
From March 2022, the Czech Radio news podcast Vinohradská 12 has a new host. The former host of the show, journalist Lenka Kabrhelová, left with her team for Seznam Zprávy and has been replaced behind the microphone by a long-time Radiožurnál reporter Matěj Skalický. On the basis of this unique and specific event, the thesis examines the influence of the personality of the host on the news podcast and reflects on it mainly from the perspective of the listeners. The theoretical part focuses on the role of the public service medium and its news service, the phenomenon of podcasting as a new way of spreading information not only by the media, and the uniqueness of hosting on the radio. Based on interviews with both presenters - Lenka Kabrhelová and Matěj Skalický - the author presents two different approaches of the Vinohradská 12 podcast teams and in the interview with Ondřej Suchan, the News Director at Czech Radio and editor-in-chief of Radiožurnál, also the non-public selection procedure of a new host. The research was conducted by means of a quantitative questionnaire survey, with the help of which the graduate student presented the audience's view of the personality of the news podcast host or the motivations and reasons for listening to the public service show.
