Self-concept of Contemporary Czech Sports Journalists
Chladová, Marta ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Waic, Marek (referee) ; Waschková Císařová, Lenka (referee)
The profession of sports journalists, according to the literature, is in various ways outside the standards of journalistic practice. The content, form and importance of their work is often questioned. Sports editorial offices tend to work according to rules that are not typical of the rest of the media; they operate in a 'world of their own'. This dissertation reveals how sports journalists themselves perceive their profession. The qualitative research, based on in-depth interviews with former and active sports journalists from different types of media, describes their work in general terms and highlights the unique features of the profession that might enlighten their position in the journalistic hierarchy and identify any specifics that the journalists themselves perceive as relevant. The grounded theory method has been used for the analysis, through which the thesis defines the central and other major themes that resonate in and out of academia and co-create the image of sports journalists. The main aim of the research is to answer the question what the professional self-concept of Czech sports journalists is. The dissertation is a summary of findings concerning the everyday life of Czech sports journalists, with an emphasis on the characteristics of the key specifics of their profession and...
Czechoslovakia ice Hockey Team 1976-1988
Švepešová, Alena ; Waic, Marek (advisor) ; Tlustý, Tomáš (referee) ; Strachová, Milena (referee)
The dissertation deals with the Czechoslovakian national ice hockey team between the years of 1970 - 1989 going through a turbulent development during that time. Successful years alternated with losses, and the results were influenced by a number of variables, for example: the management team as well as the players, the organization of league competitions, the level of preparation of any other championship participants and of course, the level of luck needed in sport events. A significant part of the work also deals with Czechoslovakian hockey players fluctuation between countries, either playing overseas legally or in a position of an emigrant. Emphasis is placed on the personal stories of individuals playing ice hockey either home or abroad viewed by Czechoslovakian press of the time. The aim of the thesis is to describe important historical milestones of Czechoslovakian ice hockey with an emphasis on archival and periodicals sources. Primary and partially secondary data were used for analyses. The disadvantage of this method is the substantial amount of material, which, in many cases, have a subjective informative value due to the ongoing cold war. Thanks to foreign primary sources, that up till now has not been reflected in Czech or foreign sports literature, the work brings a new perspective...

The main goal of this dissertation is to compare the influence of international politic relations on foreign sports relations and to examine the conditions of national volleyball teams' trips abroad during the period of the so-called state socialism. During this period, the world was divided due to the Cold War and Czechoslovakia came under the Soviet influence. The period of unification of physical education and legislation that influenced the functioning of sports and physical education units, including organized volleyball, is an important milestone of the work. The focus is on the activities of the CSTV, the instructions and recommendations it issued and which athletes had to follow when travelling abroad. At the same time, it is necessary to highlight the activities of the International Volleyball Federation, which was founded by the Czechoslovak Volleyball and Basketball Association. The key point is its expansion and influence on the development of global volleyball rules, which were partly formed by its members, who significantly changed the style of the game. Sports swimming in Czechoslovakia 1918-1938
Tomšová, Petra ; Waic, Marek (advisor) ; Kasper, Tomáš (referee)
The dissertation deals with sport swimming in the Czech lands and in Czechoslovakia in the interwar period, specifically in the period of the so-called First Republic. However, the work dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, when the first, especially river, swimming pools began to be established in our territory, which were first used for swimming training of soldiers, and only at the end of the 19th century did the general public learn to swim and there are also the first swimming competitions. The greatest development of sport swimming in our territory occurred only after the First World War, when the Czechoslovak Amateur Swimming Association was founded and it sought maximum organizational, financial and material support for swimming. Our swimmers achieved the best swimming performances in the 1920s, when they were able to compete with the European swimming powers. However, they did not have the world's top swimming, which was also seen at the Olympic Games in 1920, 1924, 1928 and 1936. In the early 1930s, the performance of our swimmers began to stagnate, which could be attributed to the fact that in other countries swimming was supported in all respects, but this was not the case in the Czechoslovak Republic, from the very beginning of sport swimming in our territory.
