Seasonal changes in stable carbon isotope composition (Δ13C) in aerosol and gas phase at a suburban station in Prague

In this work, seasonal variations in the stable carbon isotope ratio (δ13C) of total carbon (TC, δ13CTC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC, δ13CWSOC) in fine aerosol\nparticles (PM2.5) as well as in the total carbon of the gas phase (TCgas, δ13CTCgas) were studied. Despite the different seasonal compositions of carbonaceous aerosols, the\nisotope differences (Δδ13C) between the analyzed bulk aerosol parts and gas phases were similar during the seasons. This shows that the fractionation of stable carbon isotopes is a predominantly physical process in which the chemical composition of individual compounds in bulk aerosols does not play a major role.

Characterization of the porcine induced pluripotent stem cells

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are the cells established by introducing several transcription factors into the somatic cells and culturing them in embryonal stem cell (ESCs) culture conditions. Factors used for the establishment of the first iPSCs are OCT3/4, SOX2, KLF4 and c-MYC. IPSCs created by these means resemble closely to the ESCs. IPS technology may be used to derive iPS cells of individual pacients and apply these cells for their treatment in the cases where the use of ESCs represents an ethical and imunological problem. Therefore, it is important to establish an appropriate animal model for the longtime safety testing of iPSCs before acceding to their medicinal aplication.
Urban street dust: mineralogy and shape analysis of aerosolized fraction

One important source of coarse particulate matter in urban atmosphere is the resuspended street dust. The aim of this study was to determine the emission potential of street dust samples, to conduct shape and mineralogical analysis of resuspendable fraction and on the bases of the findings carry out a comparison between the different sampling sites. The dust samples were collected in February 2014 in three cities: Ostrava, Prague and Pilsen. For the purpose of this study, nine samples from the selected sites were dispersed in a resuspension chamber. The samples were collected in the center of every city in the following locations: the main square, the tram railway and the curbside. Morphological and elemental analysis was performed using a Scanning Electron Microscope with EDS detector. The presence of mineral components such as quartz, chlorite, calcite, feldspar and kaolinite was observed. In samples from Ostrava were found spherical-shaped particles composed of iron oxides. The samples of Pilsen contained amphibole mineral fibers - actinolite. X-ray Powder Diffraction at high sensitivity showed the presence of amphibole asbestos in the samples from Ostrava and Prague. The role of proteostatic mechanisms in neurodegenerative diseases

Protein homeostasis (proteostasis) plays an important role in maintaining normal cell function and viability. Neurons are particularly vulnerable to proteostasis dysregulation, resulting in damage, dysfunction, and neuronal death, as manifested in many neurodegenerative diseases. One of them is Huntington disease, hereditary neurodegeneration with autosomal dominant inheritance. Expansion of the CAG repeats in the huntingtin gene is translated into an abnormally long glutamine chain in huntingtin protein, leading to disruption of neuronal proteostasis. The primary affected area of the brain is the striatum of the basal ganglia. Disease is progressive, the onset of symptoms usually occurs in adulthood, and after many years leads to the death of the patient. Despite intensive research, disease pathology is still not fully understood, treatment is still only symptomatic and new studies, together with a deeper understanding, also raise many new questions. Through the complexity of the issue, the study of proteostasis in neurodegeneration can bring not only possible implications for therapy, but also could go deeper into the understanding of stress, memory or aging processes.
Comparison of Winter Biomass Burning Source Contribution at National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice Based on AMS and Aethalometer Data.

Although atmospheric aerosol concentrations exhibit decreasing trend in last decades, the contribution of aerosol emitted by biomass combustion is opposite due to increasing wood combustion used for residential heating. Previous works determined that the share of aerosol of biomass burning origin was up to 50 % in winter. In this work, the data from aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) are used to elucidate biomass combustion aerosol impact at National Atmospheric Observatory Košetice (NAOK) and the results are compared with simple aethalometer model approach.

On-line Measurements of Very Low Concentrations of EC/OC Aerosols at a Finish Sub-Arctic Backround Station.

Comparison of Atmospheric Aerosol Sources at Suburban and Rural Stations
