The Alto trombone

This diploma thesisdeals with the trombone origin and its development from the begenning up to the present time. The trombone, as it is known nowadays, has not actually changed as far as its structure since the 16th century. Except its development this work also tries to comparethe trombone teaching methods (France, Germany, Russia) and some outstanding trombone interpreters. This musica instrument must also be considered as the part and parcel of jezz. The chapter describes the jazz appearance and its styles in Chicago and New Orleans up to its styles in the sixties of the last century.

Jan Slabák and his Moravanka

This thesis work deals with an outstanding trumpet player Jan Slabák. He is introduced here not only as an all-round interpreter, but also as a noted band master of his ensamble, Moravanka. As its leader, composer, arranger and of course a soloist Slabák created new sound of brass music. Origin of Moravanka is a millstone in the history of bands of this type. In this work there is also devoted space to another moravian brassband Mistříňanka. Its member were, same as Mr. Jan Slabák, students of Josef Frýbort. Together with Josef Ištvánek, another important teacher of young musicians, is mentioned in the final chapter of this work.

Sometimes, there are also mentioned personages who have taken an important part in development of trumpet and therefore set the base for new ways of using it.

My bachelor thesis deals with the usage of an alto trombone within various historical epochs and about its development in the course of which the instrument gained its present form. At the same time it deals with the usage of the instrument for performance of the first part within trombone section in the orchestra and describes concrete situation, when it was not possible. I include also writing about a tenor instrument, which belongs to the theme.

The main topic of my thesis is Pavel Josef Vejvanovský, Czech baroque composer, marvelous trumpeter, member and chapel-master of Bishop Karl Lichtenstein Castelcorn?s band. I would like to introduce some facts about his life, conditions of his position at the Bishop?s court. I mention his influence to Czech baroque music especially the brass one. At the end I am trying to analyze his Sonata à 4, in g minor for Trumpet and Organ.
