The applicability of methods that are based on the employment of composite indicators in assessing sustainable development and quality of life
Petkovová, Ludmila ; Fischer, Jakub (advisor) ; Macek, Jan (referee) ; Čadil, Jan (referee)
The main objective of this thesis is to assess the applicability of methods that are based on the employment of composite indicators when evaluating the 'sustainable development' and 'quality of live' indexes. The first issue observed in here is whether the composite indicators as such even represent a suitable tool for assessing the above mentioned area of analysis; if the answer is yes, then, secondly, under which conditions the composite indicators may be applied in the context of our analysis. After answering the questions above, it is crucial to find suitable methods for the particular steps of constructing the composite indicator for the sustainable development and quality of life categories, whereby it is also necessary to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages resulting from the application of the selected composite indicators for the purposes of the respective analysis. Within this thesis, the comparison of individual methods of constructing the indicators was performed by means of applying the individual indicators on the established set of data, as well as a subsequent comparison of results and the assessment of strengths and weaknesses of the individual methods has been done with respect to the factual side of the particular composite indicators (i.e. with respect to the sustainable development and quality of life in our case). Various composite indicators for the quality of life and sustainable development have already been established; the necessity of composing additional composite indicators for the above mentioned categories reflects the problematic nature of finding a suitable tool that would be generally accepted in this case. This thesis provides for relevant conclusions and recommendations that should contribute to establish a suitable approach towards the construction of composite indicators for the sustainable development and quality of life assessment. Furthermore, the thesis provides for the comparison of methods as employed in practical construction of composite indicators in our context with methods based on a professional theory. The professional theory/literature addresses and recommends certain methods for the construction of composite indicators in the relevant context, however, these methods are typically not applied in the practical construction of the most frequently/commonly used composite indicators for measuring the sustainable development and quality of life. The critical aspects that have been observed within comparison of the individual methods are transparency of calculation, interpretability of results, robustness of the composite indicator closely linked to the nature and character of the data, and the level of applicable compensation of the individual parameters within the respective indicator that is allowed by the particular aggregation mechanism employed. The thesis concludes on a rather questionable use of composite indicators in case of assessing the sustainable development, whereby deduces on recommending the application of composite indicators only in case of assessing the quality of life, which may also be understood as a part (sub-item) of the sustainable development and which is easier to be quantitatively expressed. In parallel, the circumstances of the quality of life are better to be compared across various items, e.g. regions. The results indicate that it is not possible to establish a uniform recommendation when selecting the most suitable method; in case of every construction of the particular composite indicator it is necessary to take into account the strengths and weaknesses of all the considered methods. At the same time, the results lead to consideration of relevancy of conclusions resulting from the evaluation of quality of life by means of composite indicators, especially by means of a single number.
Analysis of wages in the Czech republic by the classification of employment
Alexandridisová, Julie ; Malá, Ivana (advisor) ; Petkovová, Ludmila (referee)
This bachelor thesis is based on analysis of wages in the Czech republic by the classification of employment in 2003--2011. The main objective of this work is research the differentiation of gross monthly nominal wages of employees in each major class of employment by classification CZ-ISCO. Another task is modeling of the wage distribution using the three-parameter lognormal distribution model and observing objects of interest and deviations in the monitored years. The parameters of model are estimated by quantile method. The base for these analysis is data obtained from business statistical systems from the site of the Czech Statistical Office and structural statistics from the site of the Average Earnings Information System.
Analysis of Labour Market by Education Structure
Ptáčková, Veronika ; Vltavská, Kristýna (advisor) ; Petkovová, Ludmila (referee)
Unemployment is one of the most important topics of the present days. This Bachelor thesis is focused on unemployment analysed by educational structure. The first part is focused on the theoretical-methodological terms and statistical indicators, which are then used in the practical part for the estimation of general and specific unemployment rates. There are used instruments of index analysis. An analysis is performed for four educational groups: no education and elementary education, high school without diploma-level, high school with A level and tertiary degree. This thesis contains with description of methods used by the Czech Statistical Office as well and the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs for data collection.
Analysis of the labour market from the perspective of the regions of the Czech Republic
Sirota, Alex ; Vltavská, Kristýna (advisor) ; Petkovová, Ludmila (referee)
The labour market represents a high-profile issue and it is essential to analyze the current developments. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the current state of the labour market and especially the analysis of the average gross monthly wage or salary between the years 2012 and 2013 in the Czech Republic, the capital city of Prague and Liberec Region. Analysis of the average gross monthly earnings is divided by gender, age and educational attainment of employees. The theoretical part will explain some basic concepts related to the labour market and it will subsequently be presented to the data source. The analytical part is focused on the evaluation of the development of average earnings. In the end will be used index of decomposition variable composition, which is used to evaluate the various influences that affect on average wages.
CONSTRUCTION OF EXCHANGE INDICES IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC AND COMPARISON OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT
Hřebejk, Jan ; Hudrlíková, Lenka (advisor) ; Petkovová, Ludmila (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to describe different mathematical methods of construction stock market indices, to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of particular approaches and to give the recommendation which of these methods is suitable to use at last. The special emphasis is placed on the methods of construction stock market indices in the Czech Republic and its close neighbouring countries. Further in order I give an account of distribution revenues probability (coefficients of growth, relative increments) and compare it with convenient theoretical distribution (normal, log-normal). My thesis is divided into three main chapters. In the first one I put a theoretic interpretation on all possible stock market indices calculation, their various transformation and relationship between them. The theoretic interpretation is completed with demonstrative examples. The second chapter is focused on calculation of Prague Stock Exchange PX index particularities. In the last chapter I perform the comparison of attitude appropriately chosen Czech and foreign index makers.
Composite indicators of quality of life
Pelikánová, Radka ; Hudrlíková, Lenka (advisor) ; Petkovová, Ludmila (referee)
Composite indicators have been extended and applied even more in recent years. But what are the reasons for their usage popularity? Can their results be trusted? Can they really measure the correct quality of life? What are the methods of measuring the quality of life? This thesis analyses these and other issues associated with composite indicators. The first part is focused on the theoretical description of indicators and their construction. The next part describes selected indicators, which quantify the discussed quality of life. The third and last part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of selected indicators and their possible correlation with the most popular and up to now the most widely used indicator of living standards, thus with GDP.
Causes and consequences of economic inactivity in the Czech Republic
Petkovová, Ludmila ; Mazouch, Petr (advisor) ; Hulíková Tesárková, Klára (referee)
The aim of study is to analyze the causes of economic inactivity in the Czech population of working age. Attention is focused on its development, deeper understanding of the structure of the population and the consequences for him mean. The first section presents the concept of economic status, population and methods used by survey data in this area. Next chapters deals with the particular reasons for economic inactivity, such as education, retirement and disability pensions and other reasons that are asked in the Labour Force Survey conducted by the Czech Statistical Office. In the development there is particularly noticeable the prolonged duration of education of young population and the increasing age of retirement. The study continues with the analysis of the age and educational structure and development of the economically active population of working age. The last chapter analyses the issue of the average length of economic activities according to individual education based on the tables of economic activity.
