Melcer, Martin ; Bečvářová, Martina (advisor) ; Hora, Jaroslav (referee) ; Odvárko, Oldřich (referee)
Title: Financial Mathematics in Czech textbooks from the Marchet's Reform Author: Martin Melcer Department: Department of Mathematics Education Supervisor: doc. RNDr. Martina Bečvářová, Ph.D. Abstract: The PhD thesis presents a comprehensive view of the development and the position of financial mathematics in Czech textbooks and collections particularly those used in high schools with consideration of the political situation in our country. The analysed period from 1908, i.e. from the Marchet's Reform, to the present is divided into five principal stages. In each stage textbooks covering financial mathematics instruction in all types of secondary schools are chosen. This shows the level and extent of the presentation, the complexity of the given tasks and problems and the way in which they are integrated into the textbooks or the syllabus, more precisely. At first the basic general characteristics of the textbooks are presented followed by a detailed description of partial topics of study which are then analysed thoroughly and mutually compared. The conclusions of the PhD thesis reflect the current situation of financial mathematics instruction and offer ways leading to the improvement in the level of financial literacy of our citizens. Keywords: financial mathematics, principal, interest, debt, annuity,...

Derivative and its application in high school mathematics with use of Internet.
Trnka, Karel ; Robová, Jarmila (advisor) ; Odvárko, Oldřich (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to create derivative-focused web pages as a new part of a high school mathematics educational web portal. The web portal is operated by the Department of Mathematics Education, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University in Prague. It is primarily intended as an additional learning resource for high school students. The diploma thesis consists of two main parts. The first part describes a search for and evaluation of similar web pages in Czech, Slovak, English and Hebrew, which deal with the topic of derivative. The second part details the creation of new web pages. In creating the web pages the author integrated interactive elements based on JavaScript, and interactive applets created with use of GeoGebra software. To display mathematical expressions on the web, the author used the technology MathJax, which works with languages of the typesetting systems TeX and LaTeX.
Problem solving in middle school mathematics
Vrtišková, Zuzana ; Odvárko, Oldřich (advisor) ; Pavlíková, Pavla (referee)
The aim of this degree thesis was creating a collection of solved exercises in Mathematics. This compilation is for pupils because it contains a lot of solved exercises and for primary school teachers as an inspiration for creating their own exercises. Main accent is placed on connecting Mathematics with real life and with other subjects taught at secondary school. The collection contains a number of problems describing situations from our real lives. The typical exercise of such a situation is buying of all kinds of goods, price reductions of goods, paying for goods in instalments and so on. The whole collection is devided into four parts. The first part contains exercises on usage of maps, determination of distance, usage of time tables and work with text. In the second part there are exercises on usage of plan with gauge and calculations of surfaces and volumes of geometrical objects. The third part contains exercises on price reductions of goods and comparison of values according to given criterion. In the last part we can find exercises on calculations of surfaces and volumes of geometrical objects, buying of all kinds of goods and price reductions of those goods.
Diagrams in the high school mathematics
Vernerová, Ivana ; Odvárko, Oldřich (advisor) ; Voráčková, Petra (referee)
This dissertation handles about an appearance of diagrams in high school mathematics and their use for solving of different problems. It features several kinds of diagrams, their dissimilarities and their ways of use. It also shows how together cohere logic and set theory. The work can help like a basis for mathematics teachers in high schools, in mathematics seminars or in hobby groups for mathematics. Enclosed is also a CD which includes an electronic form of this work.
Mathematical problems inspired by the nature
Králíková, Jana ; Odvárko, Oldřich (advisor) ; Šarounová, Alena (referee)
The diploma thesis consists of five exercises, which can be used within mathematical education at secondary schools. In these exercises students get involved with mathematical applications in ordinary life, which they can practically experience. A part of each exercise takes place outdoors, outside of the classroom. Objectives of the exercises are to display both mathematical and practical problems of the application. The topics of exercises are Tree height measuring, The measuring of unreachable distances, The altitude profile of a track, Cryptography and The Tower of Hanoi. I tried to make these exercises to solve real practical problems and to use the secondary school mathematics as much as possible at the same time. Students will use their knowledge in plane geometry, goniometry and trigonometry, functions and their graphs, sequences, series and proof by mathematical induction. Purposes of the exercises are to develop mathematical and logical thinking, to teach how to express the real situation in a mathematical way and to recognize mathematics in other fields of human activity.
Algorithms and Principles in Mathematics Education
Pazourek, Karel ; Šír, Zbyněk (advisor) ; Odvárko, Oldřich (referee) ; Šimša, Jaromír (referee)
The thesis is devoted to the use of the algorithms and the principles in mathe- matical education, especially in the education of the divisibility. It is based on study of the Czech secondary school textbooks which were published since 1852. We mention briefly the history of the system of education since 1848 as well as the theory of divisibility. There are analyzed the algorithmic methods connected with divisibility commented in these textbooks. Two applications of the algorithms are pointed out. The algorithms can be used in education of talented students as it is done in the mathematical course of the Talnet project. The principles are the fundaments of commentary of the textbooks, the principle of induction is the base of the divisibility. In the appendix, there is a demonstration of graduated development of algorithm in the case of the Euclid algorithm.
