Study of the effect of novel antiretroviral drugs on carnitine transport in the placenta
Marková, Eliška ; Čečková, Martina (advisor) ; Červený, Lukáš (referee)
Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology Student: Eliška Marková Suprevisor: doc. PharmDr. Martina Čečková, Ph.D. Title of diploma thesis: Study of the effect of novel antiretroviral drugs on carnitine transport in the placenta Nowadays, the antiretroviral treatment of HIV-positive pregnant women is the standard approach for restriction of transmission of HIV infection from mother to the fetus. In spite of necessity of this pharmacotherapy, it is important to know its safety and risks. For the correct fetal development and function of placenta it is (besides others) essential to ensure the optimal supply of L-carnitine, the key factor for oxidation of fatty acids from mother's blood to the placenta and fetal blood circulation. The deficiency of L-carnitine generally leads to significant metabolic changes in the cells and in it usually demonstrated with cardiomyopathies and myopaties. Published studies indicate higher incidence of cardiovascular diseases and cardiomyopathies in children born to mothers treated with antiretroviral therapy during pregnancy. Optimal transport of carnitine into the placental cells, is ensured due to the presence of functional transport protein OCTN2 in the apical membrane of trophoblast. The aim of this study was...

Reply to sister Filotea of the Cross: conflict of the reason and the faith
Marková, Eliška ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee) ; Vydrová, Hedvika (advisor)
There are many mysterious facts and circumstances surrounding the life and work of the nun Juana Inés de la Cruz. This thesis tries to provide answers for many of these particulars. Specifically those facts associated with the emergence of Replay to Sister Filotea of the Cross. It is, however, not possible to find a definite answer or interpretation. Juana lived in difficult times for a woman with high skills. She was not allowed to decide freely in many situations due to her being female. Her life and her creations were much closer to real social life than to closed religious inner life. Nevertheless, Juana was inspired by religious themes and was influenced by medieval mysticism. This is reflected mainly in the artistic side of her artwork. Although at the end of her life she had what might be called a spiritual conversion, it had no any effect on her literary work. Even though it had not been her primary interest, Juana became active in theological disputation. Upon request of another person she submitted Vieyra's sermon to her criticism. The letter Carta athenagorica was a crucial milestone in Juana's life, just like her decision to become a nun. Due to the letters' publication, we can now read what this writer felt, who is nowadays considered as such an important part of the nascent Latin American...
