Synagogal Music Practice in Prague at the time of the First Czechoslovak Republic

Jewish Community and Religious Practice in Prague Synagogues from the mid-19th Century until the Shoah This historical ethnographic study examines the Prague Jewish community and its c. 30 synagogue congregations in the second half of the 19th century until the shoah through the prism of their musical-liturgical practices. This research constitutes an in-depth investigation of liturgical and religious phenomena and developments which have hitherto been neglected in research on Czech- German-Jewish history of Prague and in accounts of the music history of the Czech Lands. The central question is, which forms and meanings Jews gave to their praying and acting in Prague synagogues in that period. The study is based mainly on archival research and analysis of written sources like community and official records, periodicals and written music collections as well as material sources and oral history. Three main aspects cross through the entire study: the organization aspects, the actors and the practice frame. The Ortel Band Soundscape: Establishing Community Boundaries

The aim of this thesis is to examine the consequences of the process of establishing the boundaries of the of the Ortel band soundscape, or else the Ortel community, as negotiated by actors both inside and outside the community and to place this negotiation into the context of endeavours to legitimise the community's values in the public space, economic aspects, political engagement, attitudes to radicalism and the experience of cultural anxiety and marginalisation of members of the community. I examine the topic through the prism of ethnomusicology and social and cultural anthropology where music lies at the centre of my interest. I define music as a social object, a human activity, an expressive culture and a fundamental element for establishing (and reading) music communities. I observe the dynamism and hetero-local nature of music communities through the concept of soundscapes. When describing the community, I focus on the permeable and fluid contours of the community's boundaries as negotiated by actors both inside and outside the community, when such boundaries require an image the enemy outside. "Techno-communitas": Transformation of the Freetekno phenomenon from the perspective of Social and Cultural Anthropology

The aim of this thesis is to provide a social anthropological analysis and interpretation of the freetekno party phenomenon in the Czech Republic from synchronic and diachronic perspective. The author bases his argument on both his own field research and professional literature on the topic. An extended case method serves as a basic methodological Framework. After introduction of selected theoretical concepts (music scene, neotribes, youth subculture, rites de passage, liminality and liminoidity, spontaneous communitas and rhizom) as well as outline of the current state of research in the area of study of the freetekno party phenomenon, there is an empirical part of the thesis which consists of two main parts: the historical-ethnographic and the analytical-interpretative. The first part describes the first rave party in Great Britain, expansion of this phenomenon in continental Europe, its adoption in the Czech Republic and its gradual evolution up to the present. The following part serves as an analytical-interpretation of the above-outlined situation and a subsequent socio-anthropological interpretation. Czech-Balkan counterpoint: Ethnography of the phenomenon Balkan music in Prague

This Ph.D. thesis deals with the musical phenomenon Balkan music in Prague. The so- called Balkan music (in the sense of Shelemay's 2006 soundscape) is considered to be the result of social negotiating (counterpoint) between the agents, i.e., the Czech musicians and audience, and also those (musicians and audience) who originally come from the Balkan countries. Using the tools of ethnographic research, the thesis explores the nature of this relationship. Specifically, I focus on the very creation of the concept Balkan music in the Czech scene and the role the Balkan migration plays in its formation. It turns out that the very imagination of the 'Balkans' plays a key role in defining the phenomenon, and the form of music itself is the result of the imaginations of (an imaginary) milieu (i.e., stereotypes) that is perceived as culturally distant (Todorova 2009).
SLOVAKIAN PROBE. Negotiation of local identity of alternative bands in Moravian Slovácko.

The goal of this musical anthropology qualitative research, mainly based on the field work, is to describe, analyze and interpret the process of construction of local identity of an alternative bands in Moravian Slovácko. The subject of this research are mainly two music bands from Slovácko - PSCrew and 12:PIET. PSCrew band represents hip-hop style and 12:PIET ranks among punk style bands. The musical production of these bands is defined (using an emic term) as an alternative folklore. With a use of theoretical concepts of stereotype and partially also retro and revival, I tried to demonstrate how these alternative musicians with an emphasis to their authenticity by the means of their musical spheres (so called soundscapes) pursue their notion of what is considered to be related to Slovácko and how the negotiation of their local identity is involved. For that the locally defined stereotypes are often used. These are typically recontextualized by its adaptation into the form that reflects the postmodern period.
Soundtrack of your life: Reminiscing in music bar Woodstock

Thematically this paper falls into the topic of second part of book being written by doc. Jurková Prague soundscapes, which looks into modes of remembering. This paper deals with one of these modes, which is music as medium of remembering. It is a case study, that inquires reminiscing of in-group of people, that formed around the year 2003 in music bar Woodstock in Prague. The central link for this group, or using the term of Thomas Turino, cultural cohort, was western popular music of the 1960s and bar, wher the group regularly met. The paper examines two levels that interconnect these memories and inquires what role does the music play in memories of the members now, when the bar has come through series of changes. The first one is remembering on indivudual level, remembering the times of discovering the 60s music, and second is the period of the "golden age" of the bar in it's beginning. There is an important distinction between two ways in which it is possible to look back though music - revival, which is by nature activist and nostalgia, which is passive. Theoretically, apart from classic Merriam's three part model, is this worke based on the concept of collective memory of Maurice Halbwachs. Musical aspects of the Living History phenomenon in the Czech historical fencing through the perspective of ethnomusicology

The aim of this musical anthropology thesis focuses on "medieval music" as practiced by fans of historical fencing in the form of living history on the example of two Czech bands - Subulcus and Medieval Open Band as part of project Prácheňská manství. In my thesis I focus not only on sound and musical instruments, but also on the behavior of actors and their conceptualization of the Middle Ages, according to the concepts of music as culture of Allan Merriam, resp. of music as social life of Thomas Turino. I combine here the basic ideas of ethnomusicology with the ideas of musical memory in connection with the contemporary concepts of social memory and, last but not least, with the concepts of "golden age", nostalgia, staged authenticity and invented traditions. The point of this work is to bring about the origin and form of music that the actors understand as medieval, although not always comes the repertoire from the Middle Ages.
"Folklorní mejdlo": Contemporary Folklorism in Prague

Prague as space, inside of which music of various genres is being created and performed, linked to different values, being created on foundations of distinct concepts and serving as a medium of various strategies, is characterized by fluid and difficult to grasp soundscape (Shellemay 2006). This environment allows the creation and negotiation of traditions (Glassie 1995), moving into different directions. One of them, which have a recursive character and serves its actors as the construction of meaning and carrying out sociocultural change for its actors, is connected with the concept of folklore. The presented fieldwork examines this part of contemporary Prague soundscape in the field, framed by one of the music and dance events. The regular event, named by the organizers "Folklorní mejdlo", defines itself as a connection of the world of modernity, which is currently offered in the metropolis, and the world of traditions, authenticity and folklore. The fieldwork aims its focus on the way the concepts of authenticity and legitimacy are negotiated, its assigning to individual actors and objects and generally how the actors of the event undertake the construction of folklore and how the final product looks like.
