Anonymous Companies and Public Procurement: Evidence from the Czech Republic Abstract This thesis follows up on previous research concerning inefficiencies linked to tenders awarded to anonymous companies. After anonymous shares were abolished in 2014, the question is whether similar inefficiencies can be detected in the case of companies that ceased to be anonymous. A balanced sample of formerly anonymous companies and their comparable peers was constructed via a matching algorithm. A Welch unequal variance t-test was then used to check whether a disproportionate drop in selected performance indicators and in the share of formerly anonymous companies on total volume of public procurement can be detected. A linear regression model was further applied to inquire about the effect of anonymity and former anonymity on tender-specific savings. The results show that anonymity significantly contributes to lower tender savings, but no similar negative effect can be found in case of formerly anonymous companies. Profitability of the formerly anonymous companies also decreased, but no long- term drop in tender volume was found, indicating that a large portion of the inefficiencies can be traced back to well-established businesses rather than special purpose shells. This thesis thus extends the present research in the...

Use of Theories of Harm in the Application of Art. 102 TFEU Abstract This master's thesis presents a study of the impact of European Union competition law on the area of abuse of dominance. It maps the usage of the effects-based approach and consumer welfare standard in abuse of dominance cases pursuant to Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. This is done by an analysis of the theories of harm advanced in the case law of the European Commission in prohibition decisions from the last twenty years. The thesis begins by a theoretical discussion and outline of the boundaries to the Commission's discretion in this area, as set by Union courts. Then, a short description of the process of competition law modernisation in Europe continues. In the subsequent analytical part, the cases are tested against two criteria. The first criterion is whether the Commission has analysed the actual or likely effects of a dominant undertaking's conduct. The second criterion is whether the Commission tested the pertinent conduct against a consumer welfare standard. In the final chapter, the results of the analysis are discussed. The conclusion of this thesis is that the Commission's case law did shift to a more effects- based approach over time and that the Commission does attempt to take the...
Czech and Chinese Trade Relationships: Evaluation and Impact
Jakab, Miroslav ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Cazachevici, Alina (referee)
Czech and Chinese Trade Relationships: Evaluation and Impact Miroslav Jakab Abstract The focus of this work is an analysis of the economic relationships between the Czech Republic and China. This is done by calculating indirect trade flow estimates from national input-output tables to provide a full picture of the trade relations. A Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model is then used in order to evaluate the interconnectedness of the two economies based. The findings reveal a picture of relatively low influence concerning general welfare changes, which can nevertheless bring benefit or loss to particular industries involved.
